We're not exactly sure how "A leads to B" in this case, but Edge claims a new Crackdown could be in development following the creation of Ruffian Games. The new studio, which has not been officially announced, is allegedly comprised of several members of the Crackdown development team, including "key members" and the game's lead designer.
Realtime Worlds, the original developer of Crackdown, is currently working on APB. Of course, all this sequel talk falls snugly in the realm of rumor and speculation. We've contacted Microsoft, which owns the rights to Crackdown, to ask if Crackdown 2 is currently in development. It's a Friday, might as well take one good shot in the dark before the weekend starts.
Update: "Microsoft does not comment on rumors or speculation."

I like the name, but I just thought I'd intrude and mention that its title in Japan is "Riot Act"

Best part was the climbing. Climbing to the top of the agency headquarters is a blast. They need to create an entire game where you just climb crap.
Or I guess Crackdown 2 would be fine.

Crackdown is twenty-six kinds of awesome, but I especially loved it when the agency director's comments were disjointed, e.g. "Isn't that some view, agent?" while you were running through an alley.

Whoa, thanks for reminding me how awful the box-art to that game was.

Are they even at work today? We got hammered the last few days. Up there in Redmond they got hit HARD yesterday with a buttload of snow. Either way I'd love for a sequel as long as they don't have that "find a crapload of something" achievement.

All open world games have to have that achievement BY LAW!

Did you guys ever stand on the freeway and shoot out one of the front tires of a car that was driving towards you? It was awesome because the car would jerk towards whichever tire you shot out and the driver would always overcompensate, causing the car to roll. I want to see that in more games...like Crackdown 2, for example.

I would like to order more Crackdowns, please. The jumping was awesome. I honestly enjoyed it more than the recent games in the Grand Theft Auto series.

Dear Joystiq,
Please contact all major developers and demand that they produce more games with offline/online four person split screen with bots. As I've read in many comments lately some people have real friends and have almost no games in the "Next" Generation consoles to play with when friends come over. It's almost not worth owning more than two controllers in todays gaming world.
Thanks!

"some people have real friends"
Right because no one on Xbox Live has real friends, which is good because you can't play with/against a real friend over Live anway.

You're being completely unrealistic with that comment. It's obvious that I'm implying that we all have real friends but tend to friends come over to your place versus having to play them online only.
GoldenEye 007 on N64 is still one of the best FPS solely on the fact that you have four person split screen plus bots. No online capability.

My comment was not intended to be realistic. In fact I'm not even sure what that means.

Crackdown was great, but it didn't hold my interest for too long after I cleaned up the gangs. I keep thinking I'll go back to it, but haven't yet.
I'd play a sequel if it was released at the right time of year. Sandbox games just never seem to get me excited when there's RPGs or strategy games to paly.

if this turns out to be true, i hope they make more attempts to make it a high profile release. and get it on the games for windows live along with a potential steam release to hook the PC people. seems like their type of game.
on the exbawks, just improve whats wrong and don't try to sell it based on the hype of something else. undermeans the game.

Indeed. The first Crackdown was a bonified AAA game that was not hyped or marketed as such. Kind of a sleeper, but it ended up being more fun than basically all of the AAA games that came out this year and got unlimited amounts of hype and release anticipation.

I found a copy at my local Blockbuster for $10. Bought it and realized why I loved the game so much. For Crackdown 2, I hope they give us more powers (I always found myself relying on guns too much since you can be killed VERY fast on the highest difficulty), jump higher, run faster, and some enemies that are superhuman too. Please let it be!

Yeah, I hope they don't go to story-based missions because I kind of liked the "do whatever you want to do and kill those bad guys whenever you feel like it and at your own pace" direction.
But, bosses that also have superpowers rather than just being regular guys with more health is definitely needed.

Oh, by the way, if you are still looking to get the co-op achievements for Crackdown, there are still people playing online. I was expecting it to be dead, but I suppose I'm not the only one who likes this game enough to still play it over a year after it was released.

Still one of my favorite games on the 360, it really merged the best of so many genres. I liked it so much more than GTA4.
For an update what would be cool is Rain and and darker night time where you would have to use Agent vision or Night vision goggles.
DLC would add new sections of the city or new cities with new bosses gangs and cars etc..
