Rumor: Whispers of Crackdown 2 surround new studio
We're not exactly sure how "A leads to B" in this case, but Edge claims a new Crackdown could be in development following the creation of Ruffian Games. The new studio, which has not been officially announced, is allegedly comprised of several members of the Crackdown development team, including "key members" and the game's lead designer.
Realtime Worlds, the original developer of Crackdown, is currently working on APB. Of course, all this sequel talk falls snugly in the realm of rumor and speculation. We've contacted Microsoft, which owns the rights to Crackdown, to ask if Crackdown 2 is currently in development. It's a Friday, might as well take one good shot in the dark before the weekend starts.
Update: "Microsoft does not comment on rumors or speculation."

I heard that the Halo 3: ODST beta comes with a free copy of Crackdown 2.
HighFiveJesus @ Dec 19th 2008 10:56AM
change the name, i hate the name
i can't help but think of crack house, crackhead and cracked out when i hear crack down.
Vol @ Dec 19th 2008 10:57AM
When I think of Crackdown, I think of the game being like crack myself. So addicting..
HighFiveJesus @ Dec 19th 2008 11:29AM
well i have plenty of games that are synonymous for addicting in my book. just bugs me because i think its an ugly name. sorry to be superficial.
soviet chick @ Dec 19th 2008 2:00PM
I like the name, but I just thought I'd intrude and mention that its title in Japan is "Riot Act"
Vol @ Dec 19th 2008 10:57AM
I would love me some Crackdown 2.
Do it.
Neuromancer @ Dec 19th 2008 10:57AM
Skills for kills, agent. Skills for kills.
Duke @ Dec 19th 2008 10:59AM
Those lines were awesome!
I really enjoyed playing this game. Before it came out I didn't think it looked promising at all, then when I got it I was stunned by how much I and my wife enjoyed playing it.
Crackdown 2 = A Good Idea.
Erluti @ Dec 19th 2008 11:23AM
My favorite part of the game is how after you beat it in a 10 second cinematic they invite this crazy twist out of their butt that you had no way to anticipate. But I feel like it makes for an excellent premise for a sequel!
Obie @ Dec 19th 2008 12:37PM
Yeah, until it got repeated 2000 times per session.
BananaBoat @ Dec 19th 2008 1:04PM
Best part was the climbing. Climbing to the top of the agency headquarters is a blast. They need to create an entire game where you just climb crap.
Or I guess Crackdown 2 would be fine.
Robotochan @ Dec 19th 2008 1:35PM
Wang is close, Agent.

THAT WAS AN AGENT, AGENT!
Jack Tretton @ Dec 19th 2008 10:59AM
"Skills for kills, agent..."
Crackdown is twenty-six kinds of awesome, but I especially loved it when the agency director's comments were disjointed, e.g. "Isn't that some view, agent?" while you were running through an alley.
Markusdragon @ Dec 19th 2008 12:28PM
Possibly one of the few examples where the really horrendous bugs only make the game more likeable.
Levi @ Dec 19th 2008 12:46PM
Agency: "That was quite an ascension agent. Never before has an agent reached heights like this."
Me: “I merely jumped over a car you Roy Campbell wannabe!”
baby sea tuna @ Dec 19th 2008 11:00AM
Whoa, thanks for reminding me how awful the box-art to that game was.
kentawilson @ Dec 19th 2008 11:00AM
Are they even at work today? We got hammered the last few days. Up there in Redmond they got hit HARD yesterday with a buttload of snow. Either way I'd love for a sequel as long as they don't have that "find a crapload of something" achievement.
Poisoned Al @ Dec 20th 2008 12:05AM
All open world games have to have that achievement BY LAW!
WRE @ Dec 19th 2008 11:06AM
Did you guys ever stand on the freeway and shoot out one of the front tires of a car that was driving towards you? It was awesome because the car would jerk towards whichever tire you shot out and the driver would always overcompensate, causing the car to roll. I want to see that in more games...like Crackdown 2, for example.
chris @ Dec 19th 2008 11:13AM
I would like to order more Crackdowns, please. The jumping was awesome. I honestly enjoyed it more than the recent games in the Grand Theft Auto series.
JM @ Dec 19th 2008 11:13AM
Dear Joystiq,
Please contact all major developers and demand that they produce more games with offline/online four person split screen with bots. As I've read in many comments lately some people have real friends and have almost no games in the "Next" Generation consoles to play with when friends come over. It's almost not worth owning more than two controllers in todays gaming world.
Thanks!
Erluti @ Dec 19th 2008 11:21AM
LOL!
I'm sure Joystiq is gonna get on the horn and Microsoft/Sony/Nintendo will say "Oh yeah, we're stupid! Thanks for the reminder!"
Erluti @ Dec 19th 2008 11:24AM
Sorry, that was rude of me. That has just been something that irked me from the days of reading print gaming magazines.
I sincerely apologize and wish there was a "delete post" button.
JM @ Dec 19th 2008 11:26AM
No problem on my end. I laughed when I read it.
I'm just annoyed as well as I continue to play Resistance 2 and Gears 2 and realize why can't four of us play without having to bring multiple consoles.
Erluti @ Dec 19th 2008 11:29AM
I do agree with that. I went to buy a 4th controller and stopped myself and asked "When would I ever use this?"
Although a lot of arcade titles do 4 player on one screen, and I've had some good times with them.
Neuromancer @ Dec 19th 2008 11:55AM
"some people have real friends"
Right because no one on Xbox Live has real friends, which is good because you can't play with/against a real friend over Live anway.
JM @ Dec 19th 2008 12:15PM
You're being completely unrealistic with that comment. It's obvious that I'm implying that we all have real friends but tend to friends come over to your place versus having to play them online only.
GoldenEye 007 on N64 is still one of the best FPS solely on the fact that you have four person split screen plus bots. No online capability.

"GoldenEye 007 on N64 is still one of the best FPS solely on the fact that you have four person split screen plus bots."
GoldenEye did not have bots.
Perfect Dark had bots.
That is all.
Neuromancer @ Dec 19th 2008 1:44PM
My comment was not intended to be realistic. In fact I'm not even sure what that means.
Rhamsey @ Dec 19th 2008 11:15AM
about time. god i thought they were being morons for not making a sequel.
tribble21 @ Dec 22nd 2008 12:15AM
yeayeayea no u
Kizzle @ Dec 19th 2008 11:21AM
Hell yeah. I've been playing the first one again lately...we need a sequel.
CaptNink @ Dec 19th 2008 11:21AM
Wow, I was just thinking about this last night!
Make the damn game, please!
Vcize @ Dec 19th 2008 11:22AM
Don't tease me Joystiq. There are few games I can think of that I would rather have a sequel to than this. One of the best, and most underrated games I've ever played.
Guerrilla @ Dec 19th 2008 11:25AM
Crackdown was great, but it didn't hold my interest for too long after I cleaned up the gangs. I keep thinking I'll go back to it, but haven't yet.
I'd play a sequel if it was released at the right time of year. Sandbox games just never seem to get me excited when there's RPGs or strategy games to paly.
HighFiveJesus @ Dec 19th 2008 11:38AM
if this turns out to be true, i hope they make more attempts to make it a high profile release. and get it on the games for windows live along with a potential steam release to hook the PC people. seems like their type of game.
on the exbawks, just improve whats wrong and don't try to sell it based on the hype of something else. undermeans the game.
Vcize @ Dec 19th 2008 12:13PM
"if this turns out to be true, i hope they make more attempts to make it a high profile release."
Indeed. The first Crackdown was a bonified AAA game that was not hyped or marketed as such. Kind of a sleeper, but it ended up being more fun than basically all of the AAA games that came out this year and got unlimited amounts of hype and release anticipation.
HighFiveJesus @ Dec 19th 2008 12:26PM
i'd dare say it was more fun than halo 3 but there's about a jillion teenagers who would freak out. plus i haven't played either.
Vcize @ Dec 19th 2008 2:29PM
Well, I have played (and enjoyed) Halo 3, and Crackdown is indeed more fun. Of course, you could say the same when comparing Crackdown to most games.
RyFar206 @ Dec 19th 2008 11:41AM
I found a copy at my local Blockbuster for $10. Bought it and realized why I loved the game so much. For Crackdown 2, I hope they give us more powers (I always found myself relying on guns too much since you can be killed VERY fast on the highest difficulty), jump higher, run faster, and some enemies that are superhuman too. Please let it be!
Vcize @ Dec 19th 2008 12:15PM
Yeah, I hope they don't go to story-based missions because I kind of liked the "do whatever you want to do and kill those bad guys whenever you feel like it and at your own pace" direction.
But, bosses that also have superpowers rather than just being regular guys with more health is definitely needed.
Erluti @ Dec 19th 2008 12:21PM
That is definitely the one thing I was hoping for while I was playing, that it'd turn out some of the other officers turned evil or a gang leader got a hold of some of the tech and you had to track them down across rooftops to get them.
RyFar206 @ Dec 19th 2008 2:47PM
Oh, by the way, if you are still looking to get the co-op achievements for Crackdown, there are still people playing online. I was expecting it to be dead, but I suppose I'm not the only one who likes this game enough to still play it over a year after it was released.
lothar @ Dec 19th 2008 11:54AM
Still one of my favorite games on the 360, it really merged the best of so many genres. I liked it so much more than GTA4.
For an update what would be cool is Rain and and darker night time where you would have to use Agent vision or Night vision goggles.
DLC would add new sections of the city or new cities with new bosses gangs and cars etc..
