I don't like beat em ups, but Comic Zone looked so damn cool. It was an instant purchase for the Virtual Console. Really good game that is.

As for the DS, only Hotel Dusk comes immediately to mind. Not a big point and click fan, but the look was so intriguing. Okay game but the sketchy art style, the mannerisms of the different characters, that pulled me towards the end rather than the by-the-numbers storyline.

I agree with JC, these games aren't my type neither. But I'll still check out Dark Spire cause the art style seems pretty damn cool... Maybe I'll manage to push through this one (unlike Etrian Odyssey).

Actually, I never thought Etrian Odyssey would be my type of game. I don't have the patience for grinding either. But I ended up buying it and its sequel and I've never looked back.

I like to be well-rounded so I'll try anything. My favorite genres are platformers, action, first- and third-person shooters, and RPGs, the latter which I've only been playing for about a year now but love the strategic and critical thinking component. The only genres I'm not really into is adventure, music-based games, and some sports titles.

"Have you picked up something you knew was outside of your usual area of expertise based solely on the style? Are you planning to? Or are you smarter than me?"

No, No, and Apparently. ;)

As for Etrian Odyssey: I don't normally have anything against 3D-first-person-maze-RPGs, and when I first tried Etrian Odyssey I loved it. But then I got to some enemy on the *second* floor and quickly realized two things: 1. I couldn't progress any further without defeating it and 2. I wouldn't be able to defeat it without first spending literally hours just grinding. Those two realizations quickly lead to a third realization: Etrian Odyssey sucks.

You're supposed to dodge those tough enemies on the second floor - that's why you can see them coming and they move in predictable patterns.

I'm surprised anyone would consider trying to grind up enough levels to fight them when going around was such an obvious solution.

Oops, yea, I had tried to do that before, but didn't see any path to get past. I see it now.

I don't think I've ever played a game based on how it looked.

I have deliberately avoided games because of their style, though.

....And how appealing can Dark Spire's text-based mode be? It looks like a DOS game. While that is completely awesome, it's actually kind of insulting to have to pay 30$ for what looks like a DOS game in the year 2009.

There's nothing wrong with keeping an open mind about genres you didn't like before. Avoiding a game just because it's the wrong genre is prejudice!

Quick, someone set up an Anti Defamation Gaming League so prejudice against games of a different genre will be put to an end.

Judging games on genre cannot be tolerated in 2008.

To be fair, most developers embrace the conventions of the genre they are working in to the point that you are completely correct in not playing a game because of it's genre.

I'm not saying that this is a good thing, and someone could have experience the worst in a genre and made a decision about that genre (my wife, for example, played a couple of awful, awful RPGs and hated all RPGs until I showed her Pokemon, now she's put about 900 hours into Final Fantasy III and it's getting sad).

I tend to like most genres, but there are two that I refuse to dab my fingers into: sports and shooters. I've seen my cousins play these two multiple times, and I just don't like the mechanics. Sport related games look boring, and I don't like pressure intensive shooters. (nor do I like horror movies for that reason =/) I don't want my entertainment to be stressful, but fun, so I avoid shooters like the plague.
There are two genres that I've tried even through I was skeptical: music and racing. I've grown to like racing if even just a bit. But I have realized that I have no sense of rhythm and thus totally suck at music games. So I doubt I will ever really like the genre. But even so, I still want to get EBA (tried it on a friend's DS and even though I sucked I enjoyed it). And I'm not exaggerating, if you would have seen me play, then you would have understood. Even my other friend who has no interest in video games did better than me on EBA T________T
