Actor strike threatens Castlevania movie, Anderson drops Spy Hunter movie
We're fairly certain that we all now know the many weaknesses of vampires: stakes, crosses, garlic, and obsessive, lonely teenage girls. However, we're just now starting to figure out the secret to slaying vampire-centric game-to-movie adaptations (namely, Paul W.S. Anderson's whipless cinematic stab at Castlevania); a force more powerful than holy symbols or tiny, smelly onions -- the unrelenting stoppage of work by entertainment labor unions.
Last December, when the writer's strike had cast a shadow of boredom over the land, the film was indefinitely postponed. Production started back up when said strike ended -- but with the entertainment industry currently staring down the barrel of a Screen Actors Guild strike, work on the Castlevania film has been "derailed". According to an IGN interview with Anderson, future plans for the film won't be decided until the SAG strike has been resolved.
Also in said interview, Anderson confirms that he's taken himself off of the Rock-infused Spy Hunter film, due to the script being just as terrible as you'd expect it to be. Unlike Castlevania, which Anderson claims to be quite smitten with and wishes to finish, this is probably the last we're going to hear of Spy Hunter's potentially Oscar-worthy silver screen adaptation.

Too bad. Anderson is a talented director. He could have made the "Batman Begins" of video game movies.
xGeneral DEATHx @ Dec 21st 2008 6:14PM
Please tell me that my sarcasm meter is broken...
Hashbrown Hunter @ Dec 21st 2008 6:29PM
It's not broken, it was fucking massacred.
mr nimblewick @ Dec 22nd 2008 12:14AM
What... I didn't claim it would be the "Dark Knight" of video game movies...
MR. Luis from L4D @ Dec 21st 2008 6:23PM
Anderson???? Why him!!!??
E.J. @ Dec 21st 2008 6:24PM
Same thing happened to the Justice League movie. Got shelved due to the writer's strike.

"...this is probably the last we're going to hear of Spy Hunter's potentially Oscar-worthy silver screen adaptation."
Yeah you mean like how Norbit was nominated for an Oscar last year??
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0477051/awards
God the Oscars are becoming a joke.
quasebrasileiro @ Dec 21st 2008 6:44PM
LOL. "becoming"
Obi-Habby @ Dec 21st 2008 6:48PM
I hear a Norbit sequel is in the works.
Strike Man @ Dec 21st 2008 7:12PM
You disagree with Norbit being nominated for a makeup category?
The actual quality of the film has nothing to do with technical awards like that.
soviet chick @ Dec 21st 2008 8:09PM
@Strike Man
Norbit deserved its nom, but it's still the first in a long line of more deserving films overlooked for technical achievements because they weren't of the supposed high standard Mr. Oscar looks for. Of all the films they could have chosen to break tradition, they definitely could have picked one that was actually decent... if not good.
Hashbrown Hunter @ Dec 22nd 2008 10:16AM
I do understand that the quality of the film has nothing to do with technical awards, but the fact that some of the most disturbing makeup I've ever seen in a film was in Norbit, I'm surprised the Oscars actually acknowledged it.
Moschetto @ Dec 21st 2008 6:41PM
Oh. I thought you meant they were threatening US with a Castlevania movie.
Haggard @ Dec 21st 2008 8:24PM
Not a.. no.. NOOOOO!
slycooper_rocker [anti-panda death murder squadron force five] @ Dec 21st 2008 11:05PM
if it was made by uwe boll, then it would be threatening.
Zarim @ Dec 21st 2008 7:05PM
Seriously? An actor's strike? Yeah those poor actors can only afford 4 houses. Where on Earth are they going to spend June - August? You people are condemning them to their mid-summer homes during late summer, how dare you!
Jon A. @ Dec 21st 2008 7:20PM
That's pretty funny, but the only Actors that get enough benefits are the ones that are involved in the big budget projects. And what if a project you've been working on for a year gets dropped unexpectedly by the production company? And how should actors be paid for Internet content? The film industry (SAG's going on strike) is just so complicated, and actors really just want to make sure they'll be okay in the future.
And the writer's strike went so well (for the writers) :).
Zarim @ Dec 21st 2008 9:32PM
Yes, my initial reaction was to think of only the celebrities with millions of dollars. I'm sure the guild also defends those who don't make nearly as much. While I don't claim to be an expert, I still find it hard to find sympathy for them when there is so much else else wrong with the world; although I suppose I still wish them well since the principle of the matter is still on their side. They should be paid for their work, internet or not, but it's hard to be sympathetic given the generally understood lifestyle of Hollywood.
aj @ Dec 21st 2008 10:43PM
I think it's terrible how a union can control an entire industry (like how the WGA is both really hard to join and mandatory to join if you want to write in the biz) and dictate whether or not it's members are allowed to work.
The WGA strike was all about sales of TV shows on DVD. While this was going on, how many writers were forced out of work and were ultimately not affected by the resolution anyway? How many people who work in the film industry - carpenters, grips, cooks, cameramen, and so on - were denied work because of the writers?
What's the SAG strike about? Do you think the SAG is worried about the people they're putting out of work and who will be expected to return to work with no reward, no benefit, just "back to work, the actors got more money and we got 6 months of unemployment cheques"?
THAT is what bothers me.
SoulBlade @ Dec 21st 2008 7:43PM
video game movies are not my concern when it comes to an actor's strike... this just means there will be more asstastic reality tv showing up.
at least you needed writers to come up with crazy ideas for stupid people to do! sigh.
Jr13 @ Dec 21st 2008 7:59PM
"Anderson confirms that he's taken himself off of the Rock-infused Spy Hunter film, due to the script being just as terrible as you'd expect it to be"
That must have been one hell of a bad script... the guy was "smitten" with RE2's.
nuero @ Dec 21st 2008 8:09PM
I wonder how this guy feels about how being the completely inept Paul Anderson in film-making... -especially- comparatively.
Deadpool @ Dec 21st 2008 8:50PM
Vampires suck. They really REALLY suck. All they do is suck. They just plain suck. Flying around, acting all emoheroic while girls swoon over them. Wearing their designer clothes, shiny shoes, styled hair, clear skin, well groomed...which is kinda odd considering vampires can't see their own reflection.
Anyway the point of this story is if you see a vampire, knock out there teeth and steal their shoes. That's what grampy told me to do and I made a lot of money selling those shoes. :)
slycooper_rocker [anti-panda death murder squadron force five] @ Dec 21st 2008 11:07PM
they don't suck! they SCRAPE AND LICK!

The Grim Adventures Of Billy And Mandy, "Fear and Loathing in Endsville" the "Suck out the poison!" line.
HA! Beat that hotshot! I watch far too much TV + Youtube not to know that! By the way the voice actor for the vampire in that episode was the fantastic Phil Lamarr (a.k.a UPS Guy From MAdTV). I love Billy And Mandy...RAGLEFRAGLE!
snarfoogle @ Dec 22nd 2008 6:12AM
Phil LaMarr aka Vamp
No. "Vamp" isn't for vampire. It's because he's bisexual...
Deadpool @ Dec 22nd 2008 10:07AM
He played Vamp from Metal Gear Solid as well but I'm not talking about that Vamp but the Billy & Many vampire...AHRGGGG don't confuse ME!! It HURTs my Brain!
Fred Fred Burger Stop. Fred Fred Burger Go. Ahhhh....okay I'm better. :)

I thought this article was about Wes Anderson doing a Castlevania movie. I could see Bill Murray as a moody, sarcastic Dracula.

I will not sleep tonight..
Lekko @ Dec 22nd 2008 12:07AM
Actors better learn to take what they can get. I fear after not too long, CG will begin to rival living talent, and CG doesn't bitch nearly as much.
aj @ Dec 22nd 2008 11:31AM
Most women in films looks like bad CG anyway.
I thought Tara Reid was a robot for the longest time. No joke.
Alistair loveless @ Dec 22nd 2008 1:47AM
The only Castlevania movie i would see/respect would be something along the lines of Symphony of the night done like vampire hunter D (bloodlust) and Pan's labyrinth.
Honestly though i would really like to see a Really well done Mini seris (think Bloodlust but in a stretch like Dark shadows without all the soap opera type drama) i want it to be truly unholy like the exorcist.
I want people to try and ban it for Satanic references, and i want it to be gritty, and terrible.
But not like saw, more like Silence of the Lambs series.
Coldbrand @ Dec 22nd 2008 4:54AM
Good I say! Death to the shitty video game movies!
ToRo @ Dec 22nd 2008 11:43AM
Were you guys really bored during the writers strike? I don't get how you could be. With video games and YouTube, there really isn't a need for TV imo.
Paul @ Dec 23rd 2008 6:27PM
A Spy Hunter movie? WTF? I have to admit, I enjoy somw of what The Rock does and my kids love him, but Spy Hunter? It seems that he's just as good an actor now as when he was a wrestler. Whenever I see him in a good movie, I can't help but wonder where they all studied. A good acting school is worth it’s weight in gold. The key is to find one that caters to your individual needs. Not only do you need the basic tools for auditioning, scene study and the like, but you need a curriculum that works with whatever your schedule may be. Whether you work all day, go to high school or care for your kids, not everyone can study in the traditional way. Another acting program that works this way is Film Connection. http://www.film-connection.com/Acting.htmlThe Film Connection’s acting program is affiliated with Joe Anthony studios and fetures valuable one-on-one mentoring. They are also available to anyone living in the United States and have financial aid assistance.
