i just cant stand the play and feel of guitar hero. the clicking of strumming and just the overall feel that im playing with a toy (i know rock band is a toy too, but it just feels much more natural and realistic.)

seconded. rock band gets it right, whatever it is. activision tries to sell gh with razzle dazzle, whacky ideas and in game sponsoring and spokespersons rather than a fun to play game.

see I disagree, I am used to playing guitar hero. Today I played Rockband 2 in gamestop, playing living on a prayer on medium. on guitar hero I got 100% on this song, Rockband i could hardly play a note, I will agree the clicking on guitar hero is annoying

You guys talk about these music games way too much.

Let's ignore the apathy the entire genre is suffering from at the moment (Guitar Hero down 19% compared to last year, EA layoffs following Rock Band failure at retail, Wii Music considered a flop, that Konami game nobody knows exists), just continue talking about these games. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Hmm, and yet, everywhere I go, people are getting more Rock Band obsessed...

Well Wii Music was a flop. I mean, it had no substance. I would not waste my money on that title. I managed to convince over a dozen people not to spend $50 for such a game. (And yes, I've tried it.) That Konami game was horribly pathetic, but then again, Konami lost what they had in the music genre. Even their DDR games have been sucking. And I think Guitar Hero sales are down because of Rock Band. When Rock Band came out, it was like, play a game with only guitars or with a whole band? Yet Guitar Hero did guitars better and decided to try to be something it wasn't: another Rock Band. Really, no matter what Activision did at that point, Rock Band killed a decent number of their sales. Let's be honest, most people will not buy both Rock Band and Guitar Hero, so Guitar Hero's sales are bound to be affected by competition.

i'm more partial to the GH instruments, but since RB2 is fully-featured and promises 500+ songs for DLC soon, i'm picking RB2 as my favorite software, but RB peripherals just suck balls, i'm going to stick with my GHWT set of instruments, and i may get the yearly rock band game

That's about where I am. I run with the GHIII and GH:WT guitars and the Rockband 2 Drumset. I like having access to so many songs, like in Rockband. Although, there are a lot of things that I like in Guitar Hero. I would like to see the Star Power system in from GH:WT in rockband. Also the Character costomization is better than rockband, but needs more costume choices. And I loved the single player mode. I can find all these things that I love about GH:WT, but I still prefer rockband because it of the access to all the music. I just wish their equipment wasn't garbage.

Have you used any RB2 equipment? It's much better than the old RB1 stuff (I have both). The guitar definitely sucked for RB1, but the RB2 guitar . . . love it. I prefer it to GHWT's guitar by a longshot. GHWT guitar still has that annoying, clicky strumbar, and the star power goes off pretty easily on it . . . not to mention the useless slider. RB2 guitar is completely silent -- frets are super soft, no noise, strumbar doesn't click, and the tilt mechanism is much better. I haven't had my Overdrive go off "accidentally" at all with the RB2 guitar, but I've had it go off a lot on the GHWT guitar.

Hmm... both good games, and GH generally has better included music, but RB has much better DLC. So unless I wouldn't be able to ever download more music, I would pick Rock Band.

Plus, the ability to transfer songs from the first game is a huge plus, not to mention that any previously downloaded songs transfer over automatically. So really, it's almost no competition when you take that into account. When I get Rock Band 2, I'll already have well over 100 songs to play. :) Of course, I'm speaking in the 360 sense, as I know that platform doesn't get jipped by music games.

Guitar Hero has been pretty much dead to me since Harmonix left. I've been a fan of Harmonix ever since the days of FreQuency and Amplitude. When they left GH to go make something bigger--Rock Band--I was all for it. Sure, it was more expensive, but there was a lot more to it. In my opinion, Guitar Hero was all about guitar and the fact that World Tour is the exact same band setup as Rock Band rubs me the wrong way, because it's obviously just ripping off Rock Band because they see how popular it is. I'd rather want a game developed by actual musicians; I don't want to play Tony Hawk's Pro Guitarist.

The solo member of Sworn (Electro Rock) and the drummer for An Endless Sporadic (Impulse) are both Neversoft employees. :P

Anyways, I much prefer Guitar Hero over Rock Band. Believe it or not, the clicks for the guitar simply feel better than the weird sponge that is the RB guitar. The on-disk music for GH has always been loads better than the crap on Rock Band, and I'm not going to spend $300 to change that.

I admit that pigeonholing Neversoft as a Tony Hawk developer with no music experience was ignorant of me. But it's just that I have a problem with series that continue on after the original developer leaves. I say the same with, for example, Spyro the Dragon and Crash Bandicoot not being good ever since Insomniac Games and Naughty Dog, respectively, stopped making them. As far as music selection being "crap," that is subjective. I own both Rock Bands and there isn't a single song that I'd do without. The instrument argument doesn't really work though since instruments from either game should be compatible with both games.

But of course, this is my opinion and I respect yours. I'm not trying to argue here, just clarifying what I was trying to say earlier. Even though I dislike the GH series now, I still am kind of glad that it IS emulating Rock Band, because competition can lead to innovation, and monopolies aren't that great. Now, Rock Revolution though... don't get me started on that. Lol.

I actually like Guitar Hero more. It was actually the FIRST game which involves notes scrolling down the screen and playing those notes with a plastic instrument to classic rock songs. And for some reason I become way more addicted to Guitar Hero than I do Rock Band. I get very bored with Rock Band's single player, but you can't beat Rock Band's multiplayer.

Your argument is flawed in 2 ways

First of all....no, it wasn't http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guitar_Freaks

and 2, even if it was.....HARMONIX was the one that made it such.
Harmonix does not make guitar hero anymore
Harmonix makes rock band

Rock Band 2. Which setlist is better is a matter of opinion (personally, I give RB2's a slight edge), but there's no question that Harmonix's game has the better DLC catalog. For me the quality of the gameplay is pretty much a non-issue. Whichever one I pick I'll get accustomed to, and that will be that. So if it's all about the music, Rock Band 2 wins.

Now, I'm sure this equation would be different if the RB1 I had played was a more capable version.

As far as instruments go, definitely prefer the GH guitars but have yet to try their drum set.

also, i prefer the songs in rock band over world tour. who wouldnt want to play timmy and the lords of the underworld? =D

GH:WT wins hands down on instrument quality. They feel substantial and aren't brittle like the RB ones, especially the drum kit.

As far as gameplay that is almost identical except for singing which i give to RB. I'm not sure how they managed to screw it up but GH:WT singing mechanism sucks. It doesn't register well and the way they choose to display the lyrics sucks, as well as having the hardest to read font I've ever seen.

In terms of songs, RB also has a slight edge here. They just have a better overall selection and more downloadable content worth having... of course this can change easily.

So on those three counts I'd say RB is probably the winner. I personally own GH:WT and since I can use those same quality instruments with RB I do plan on buying the game version when it is out. Thank you RB for making that an option and not making me clutter up my living room anymore than it is.

I have only played the 360 versions of each, but I must say I am split between the two.

The Guitar Hero instruments are much better in my opinion. The RB guitar has a very weak feeling strum bar, and without the click I can't do anywhere near as good as I can with the GH guitar. The slider isn't exactly useful, but it's more than the RB guitar has (and you think an effects switch IS useful?). As for the drums, Guitar Hero's drums are awesome, the raised cymbals, velocity sensitivity, and sturdy feel are great, and it has 5 individual pads rather than 4.

The only reason I would consider giving Rock Band the win here is that RB has more songs (and by that I mean more GOOD songs). I liked GH2 and GH3's set lists, but World Tour's is nowhere near as good. It has a bunch of no-name songs, too many slow songs, and not as many classic, popular tracks. Rock Band, on the other hand, has all the songs from RB1 and 2, tons of DLC, etc.

I like Guitar Hero better than RB in every way but the songs, the RB songs are much better.

What? The RB guitar has the frets at the bottom that you can use during the solo (blue) parts, so that you don't have to strum; you just press the buttons. They're also good for racking up the points at the end of songs that give you that "bonus" part, where you hit anything for points.

I ordered RB2 for Wii today. I already own GH:WT, Les Paul controller and some generic mic.

Honestly I like both series and I think each one has their pros and cons. (I've played RB2 on 360 before) To pick a favorite... I'll have to wait for RB2 to arrive to decide. But for now I'll say:

RB2 pros:
+ Cleaner look
+ Bigger DLC library available
+ Multiplayer is more teamwork focused

GHWT pros:
+ Over-the-top look allows for crazy scenarios that wouldn't make sense in RB.
+ Better character creation
+ Star Power
+ GH instruments feel better
+ Soundtrack is smaller but more varied.

I'll wait for RB2 to arrive to give a better opinion.

Picked up the GHWT band set on thursday and rock band 2 stand-alone disc, as this provided the best compatibility. Been playing both games all weekend with my buddies and every time we try GHWT out for a few songs, we look at each other and decide to go back to RB2. Overall its way more fun to play with other people, and thats where the fun is for me with the band games. If I just wanted to play by myself I'm happy with GHIII. Haven't given GHWT single player a shot yet. Getting used to the GHWT drums in rock band was a bit weird at first, but only takes a couple of songs. Harmonix did a great thing by making the GH instruments compatible. Even the non-used orange symbol registers when you hit it. You can hit that instead of blue and it will be a cymbal instead of the drum. If you do orange + green together it does a crash. Very cool. Just get both games, and get all your DLC on RB2. GHWT presentation doesn't look nearly as nice as RB2, also the status bar in RB2 is way better. When singing I like that it says "Awesome" "Strong" etc. you don't get that in GHWT. GHWT songs seem to be a bit more challenging tho.

From what they've said so far, the songs from the RB1 game disc won't be transferable to RB2 because Wii games can't be patched and they used patches to get RB1 songs into RB2 on the other systems. As far as the RB1 track packs go, they were all DLC songs for other systems, so going off their promise to have all DLC from other systems available to the Wii at some point, they should be available as DLC down the road.

Guitar Hero: World Tour is the better game for sure. The drums are amazing, the click in the strum bar is absolutely necessary and is what makes it better than Rock Band's. Ask any player at a high level, they use the Guitar Hero's controller just for that click (Among other things). Hell, Ben Heck modded his RB guitar so it WOULD click.

The track list in World Tour is good, but there is a lot of wasted space. Complete crap like Good God, Scream, Aim, Fire, Aggro, Antisocial, Love Removal Machine are mixed with some foreign language songs that have only been placed once because well, who the hell wants to sing in Spanish? The DLC has delivered so far, The Killers and Smashing Pumpkins releases were great and I can't wait for the Travis Barker pack.

Ovals are, and will forever be better than crappy rectangles that Rock Band uses, there is absolutely no contest. The only thing that Rock Band does do better than WT is the fact that one person failing at a harder part doesn't end the entire song. I can't tell you how many times songs have been ruined because people I introduce to the game fail on medium 75% of the way through. I don't see why a "no-fail" mode had to be taken out of simple band quickplay, but it really bothers me.

I thought about buying RB2 for Wii now that it is compatible, but honestly all the disc swapping just to play a couple of different songs would get old to me and I wouldn't want to be spending money to get DLC on both.
