Realtime Worlds in 'discussions' with Microsoft about Crackdown 2
Realtime Worlds honcho Colin MacDonald confirmed the studio is in "ongoing discussions" with Microsoft about the possibility of Crackdown 2. In a statement sent to VG247, MacDonald responded to rumors that a sequel is currently in development by Ruffian games, a new studio that allegedly employs several former Realtime Worlds staffers from the Crackdown development team.
The statement from MacDonald relays that about "five or six" ex-Realtime Worlds staff are employed by Ruffian, noting that he doubts whether Microsoft would harm its "otherwise fruitful existing development relationship" by funding a Crackdown sequel with a start-up on RTW's doorstep. We'll have to wait and see what happens, but if Ruffian does develop a potential Crackdown 2, it sounds like Realtime Worlds wouldn't be too happy.

he doubts???
does he know that in the greater Scheme of things that one insignificant developer doesn't matter??? MS will drop them off a cliff for a better cheaper developer in a second

I only bought Crackdown for the Halo 3 beta. I bet I played Crackdown more than I ended up playing Halo 3.
I have never played a GTA game because I refuse to support the game based on the real world like crimes it glorifies. I will buy a Crackdown 2 first day if it is about busting crime!
Erwos @ Dec 22nd 2008 8:46AM
I bet you didn't like Crackdown's ending, eh?
Jakka ( The Order of Haters of Balance) @ Dec 22nd 2008 8:47AM
Well, I prefer Crackdown over GTA because one is fun while the other is not, but I'm glad we both agree on something.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Dec 22nd 2008 9:06AM
I'm guessing you don't play too many games then.
Obie @ Dec 22nd 2008 9:23AM
Are you serious? Really?

Jakka - You don't like fun games?
Jakka ( The Order of Haters of Balance) @ Dec 22nd 2008 12:30PM
No, getting phone calls every five minutes from a stupid cousin who wants to see 'biiiig Ameeeericaaaan tittieeees' isn't my idea of fun.
Premature ejaculation man @ Dec 22nd 2008 12:47PM
Throwing civilians/cars/flaming wreckages/trucks/barrels at your friend is though!
Duke @ Dec 22nd 2008 1:52PM
I too thought the phone calls and seedy crap in GTA made it less fun. Not all of us enjoy that crap when we play a game. In the end I found the MP of GTA to be more fun than the single player.

I actually did not buy Crackdown until the Halo beta was over just to show I did not buy it for the beta like so many actually did. I loved it. I could hope that Crackdown 2 is as good and better than 1. I loved the sandbox premise and superhuman abilities. After beating the game about 6 times though, it got a bit repetitive. I hope part 2 will offer a little more substance in terms of varying missions and what not. Seriously, 1 type of mission: go to this location and kill this person. Either way, I hope they make a part 2 and that it rocks.
HighFiveJesus @ Dec 22nd 2008 12:23PM
sounds like you'll probably really like InFamous
Smurfy @ Dec 22nd 2008 8:53AM
I was initially interested in Crackdown because of the Halo 3 beta (which, it turns out, sucked) but then I was like "woah I have to buy this" because it looked great.
It was.
Ben @ Dec 22nd 2008 9:04AM
It will be out when the Halo 4 beta is ready.
Vcize @ Dec 22nd 2008 10:01AM
Halo 4 will be out when the Crackdown 2 beta is ready.

I would buy Halo 4 for a Crackdown 2 beta, but I wouldn't buy Crackdown 2 for a Halo 4 beta

I need you to find a high profile game for us to latch onto! Sales for hype agent, sales for hype!

Crackdown is easily one of the best games I've played this generation.
It really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really REALLY needs a sequel.
I'd buy Crackdown 2 over Halo 4, Dead Space 2, GTA 5, Fallout 4, and any other game for that matter.
Premature ejaculation man @ Dec 22nd 2008 12:43PM
4 player online co-op maybe even 8 player versus.
Hopefully the game would continue from the first one, but instead, you rebel against the agency's latest town which have their own agents.......
I'm already hyped for a non-existent game :(
jimmygotsmack @ Dec 22nd 2008 9:50AM
Whats not to love about a game in which you can jump on 50 stories buildings, while caring a semi, and then tossing said semi to see it crash into the ground and decimate everyone around.
Vcize @ Dec 22nd 2008 10:10AM
It's a shame that Crackdown 1 didn't get more pre-release hype other than being the game that had the Halo 3 beta. It truly is one of the most fun games I've ever played.
Just look through the comments of any blog post about Crackdown 2 and you'll see an endless stream of people going on and on about how much they loved Crackdown 1. It's kind of like the Firefly of videogames. Most people that play it love it, it just didn't have the marketing or hype to be considered a AAA release, even though it was a AAA game.
There is no game currently announced, or even likely that could be announced on any system that I'd be more excited for than Crackdown 2. That includes a new Zelda, Gears, Halo, Elder Scrolls, SSB, MGS, LBP, Uncharted, Mass Effect, etc etc.
emotaku @ Dec 22nd 2008 10:39AM
Mmm, the blogosphere editors really want this game to happen xD
UNC_Samurai @ Dec 22nd 2008 10:43AM
There's a couple of things I would like to see in Crackdown 2. 1: A better range for developing skills. If you're going to scatter 500 orbs across the city, make it worth my while to find them all by giving me more levels of agility (say, 10 instead of 4). 2: A bit more thought in designing ledges to grab onto. The final city was somewhat aggravating because I had to spend a lot of time looking for ways to access rooftops, and they seemed to be fewer and further between. 3: More Agency vehicles, and have access to them within the major cities. I would use the cool Agency vehicle until the first crash/run-in with a boss, and then just grab the first car I could find. I'd like to see options which made it worth holding onto and grabbing better vehicles.

You're kidding, right?

RTW has said several times they aren't interested in making a sequel. Microsoft owns the IP (AFAIK). If RTW won't make a sequel and Microsoft sees that gamers want a sequel and that a sequel will sell (which it will), then pass the buck to someone else and let them make it.
If RTW wants their piece of the pie, then make the damn sequel. But don't throw idle threats at Microsoft because you morons don't want to put APB on the shelf for a little bit (your 2nd title, in case you forgot) and make a Crackdown sequel.
Get some more work and releases under your belt before throwing out threats, guys. It's not like you're in the league of Kojima where you can open your mouth and a company like Microsoft is going to obey your every command.
And to be OT I don't give a crap WHO makes the game, I just want a sequel. Make it just like the first, one, hell they could recycle everything FROM the first one, just put a million gang members in the game. On that note, just release a DLC pack or something for $10 that adds 100 more gangs or something, I dunno. Do SOMETHING.
Crackdown deserves to be more than the 360's "Otogi", a truly incredible game that almost no one played. Speaking of which, anyone have the number for From Software to get them on the phone to make an Otogi 3 for the 360?? (sigh) A gamer can dream...
Neuromancer @ Dec 22nd 2008 11:12AM
So I guess when Realtime Worlds studio manager Colin McDonald said not immediately starting on the sequel was "a horrible, horrible decision that we still dwell on", he was lying, right?
Next time you're going to write a 6 paragraph rant about something you know nothing about, do some research.

Vcize @ Dec 22nd 2008 11:38AM
Why does he need to do more research? Last I checked, his post was talking about RTW actually MAKING the game, not TALKING about how they wish they had started making it.
McDonald can do all the decision regretting he wants, but it doesn't get us any closer to having the game in our hands.
zero2dash @ Dec 22nd 2008 12:44PM
Next time bother reading the 6 paragraph reply. As Vcize said, my comment was on them actually making the game; I could give a crap about whether they wish they had. He's complaining about Microsoft going to someone else to make the game. Seems to me like the only reason they'd do that is because RTW has said they have no plans on making a sequel because they're making APB. Now he's contradicting that earlier statement of theirs, making it sound like they DO want to make a sequel.
THEN DO IT. Don't wish-wash about it, DO IT. If RTW tells Microsoft they'll make a sequel and the groundwork gets laid out for it, then there's no reason for Microsoft to go knocking at Ruffian's door, is there?
Use common sense for once in your life.
