You know, I'm actually quite surprised that the Saturn failed. Sure, there was the awkward sudden launch and stiff competition from Nintendo and Sony. And then there was the whole "oh hey our 32-bit system attaches to the top of the Genesis, no, wait, here it is, it's called the Saturn, actually forget that, here's the 128-bit Dreamcast!" thing. But they did make a fair number of decent games for the system. Furthermore, despite their occasionally questionable hardware and marketing decisions, Sega seemed to take care of its fans. One method in which they did this was by adding lots of little bonuses into their games. This includes all of the debug modes in Vectorman, the ability to play as the bosses in Clockwork Night, and many other little treats packed into their greatest titles.
Sometimes, this fan service even includes entire special games. Later in the same year that it was released, the cult-classic NiGHTS into Dreams... had a special bonus game released that came with its own story, special levels, and a euphoric Christmas theme. It was made available for free, having been bundled with select Sega releases and certain gaming magazines. It was truly an awesome "thank you" for their fans, as Sega delivered a special, easily accessible game just to help its supporters enjoy the holidays that much more. Sure, the game is only two levels long, but that's all it needs to be. It'd be nice to see other game companies make little holiday-specific releases of their best titles. A special Christmas-themed galaxy for Super Mario Galaxy? I can always dream.
