ESRB: Classic Sega games coming to XBLA, PSN
The ESRB has rated several classic Sega titles for the Xbox 360 and PS3, which are presumed to be future XBLA or PSN releases. IGN takes note that Gunstar Heroes, Phantasy Star II, Comix Zone and Sonic The Hedgehog 3 are all listed, but there's no word on release dates. All these titles are currently available on the Wii's Virtual Console.
Assuming these sell for $5 each if they come to XBLA and PSN, Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, releasing in "spring 2009" for $30, seems the more frugal choice. The disc-based collection features all of the above titles -- with the exception of Gunstar Heroes -- along with dozens more.

I can't wait for that collection.
AwesomeTown @ Dec 23rd 2008 2:41PM
Me too. Talk about a bargain.
Wiinterfang @ Dec 23rd 2008 2:45PM
Yep and 720p full HD and Dolby Digital 5.0 surround sound doesn't hurt either.
Zertoss @ Dec 23rd 2008 2:48PM
5.0? No subwoofer support?
Wiinterfang @ Dec 23rd 2008 2:49PM
I don't know I make the sound thing up XD, I only know that the games are HD now.
knighty (GT: ZeraKnight) @ Dec 23rd 2008 3:25PM
Well they probably just use 2x SaI/Eagle filtering so they're not really HD, but it still looks fantastic (and a fuck lot better than the original resolution).
Wiinterfang @ Dec 23rd 2008 3:30PM
I read it was scaled to 720p but it was probably using the technology you mention Knight, still that means you can play the classics in your Huge Ass HDTV without looking crappy, that's pretty cool, now can I have a Dreamcast collection or at least the Dreamcast games HD on the live arcade, Please my dreamcast is Dead and I want to play some Crazy Taxi,Jet Set Radio and Sonic Adventure 2 :(.
knighty (GT: ZeraKnight) @ Dec 23rd 2008 4:56PM
Both of those filtering methods (Sai goes up to 8x or something I think) have been available on tons of major emulators for a while now. Try it on Visual Boy Advance (I think that's the name). It looks really damn nice. Obviously not as nice as remastered sprites but making HD sprites must be the most laborious and boring job ever.
Levi @ Dec 23rd 2008 6:19PM
Me too. I clicked 'Comments' just to say that. You did it for me. +1.
Strategy_Panda (The Sandwich Poisoning Crew) @ Dec 23rd 2008 6:40PM
how do you do surround sound in a two dimensional game?
(The Award-Winning) dark_inchworm @ Dec 23rd 2008 2:37PM
Does Sega plan on selling their oldies in every form ever possible?
Wiinterfang @ Dec 23rd 2008 2:42PM
Yes just like Nintendo,Capcom,Squaresoft,Namco and countless others.
syrik zero @ Dec 23rd 2008 3:15PM
Because people like myself and many others will buy them. I'm ready to put some cash down for those games. I have them on Wii but don't really like the contols with the classic controller
Snowblind @ Dec 23rd 2008 2:43PM
IGN only assumed these would be coming to XBLA/PSN, chances are they're only being rated because they're being released on the collection. Why would they sell them seperate when they're being released together?
Also, Microsoft doesn't allow emulations of old games like this anymore, so unless they're massively enhanced, it's not happening.
The rating info is for the collection.
slycooper_rocker [anti-panda death murder squadron force five] @ Dec 23rd 2008 2:54PM
since when do they re-rate every game for a collection?
Paulmichael @ Dec 23rd 2008 4:28PM
Some people would rather buy a few titles than the entire collection, perhaps. Which makes no sense, considering the collection is going to be a mere $30!
Snowblind @ Dec 23rd 2008 4:40PM
All games on the collection will have to be rated, yes. And again, Microsoft don't allow these emulations to go up on XBLA anymore, so that can't be the case, unless they've gone to the effort of completely porting them..
Which seems pointless, considering the collection coming.
Dr Jeckyl and Mr ESC. @ Dec 23rd 2008 2:49PM
SONIC 3 AND KNUCKLES would kick ass so hard. I bought that one for the PC,friggin awesome.
I hope Sega doesn't screw it like Sonic 2 adding an unnecessary online mode.
Wiinterfang @ Dec 23rd 2008 2:53PM
Online mode? what does it do? :O.
Dr Jeckyl and Mr ESC. @ Dec 23rd 2008 3:02PM
It adds an achievement which you can get with host advantage and a mode that is not all that fun to play.
Split screen = co-op Sweet.
Co-op over xlive = Awesome.
Vs mode using Special stages = WTH?
Wiinterfang @ Dec 23rd 2008 3:03PM
Sounds weird but better than I though I was guessing leaderboards.
WiNG LifeInAGame.com @ Dec 23rd 2008 3:46PM
Um, Sonic 2 always had a versus mode.
lrn 2 1990s
Wiinterfang @ Dec 23rd 2008 4:26PM
He was talking about an online mode not the versus mode.
Punchy @ Dec 23rd 2008 3:03PM
I'd love to see the original Toejam & Earl updated with online co-op and some HD cell shaded graphics.
Tez @ Dec 23rd 2008 3:15PM
That collection sounds cool, but I have almost all of those carts sitting next to my TV...
BxGT @ Dec 23rd 2008 3:21PM
Finally an rpg for xbla.
WiNG LifeInAGame.com @ Dec 23rd 2008 3:46PM
Castlevania SOTN called.
Iwa @ Dec 23rd 2008 4:42PM
Castelvania SOTN isn't a RPG, it's an action/adventure game.
tyetheczar @ Dec 24th 2008 11:46AM
PSII needs to be the Sega Ages version with a retranslated script. BADLY.
StarFoxA @ Dec 23rd 2008 3:24PM
Gunstar Heroes isn't in that collection? I love that game.
Exick @ Dec 23rd 2008 3:29PM
Classic games + Xbox 360's d-pad = Match made in failure.
Marty @ Dec 23rd 2008 3:32PM
I don't want Sonic 3 unless it has Sonic & Knuckles virtually attached to it.
WiNG LifeInAGame.com @ Dec 23rd 2008 3:47PM
AND you should be able to attach Sonic 2 to S&K if you own that on XBLA.
ice~ @ Dec 23rd 2008 4:23PM
I LOVE gunstar heroes :D
JB @ Dec 23rd 2008 4:27PM
I can't wait for the collection disc Sonic,Golden Axe,and Shinning Force FTW.
WondrousHippo @ Dec 23rd 2008 4:33PM
Oh man, if Gunstar Heroes comes out on XBLA with online play, I, may just have to double-dip on this one, owning the VC version already.
tyetheczar @ Dec 24th 2008 11:46AM
Same here, man. Same here. Also, we need more Treasure XBLA ports (Radiant Silvergun, Guardian Heroes, and [Saturn Version of] Silhouette Mirage anyone?)
tifosiotaku @ Dec 23rd 2008 9:40PM
I hope this is being done for the compilation, because if it isn't, Sega is very stupid for doing this when they could, oh, put Daytona USA up on XBLA/PSN...
JohnMazz @ Dec 24th 2008 3:38AM
I seem to remember wii virtual console being promised Sega Genesis games. We've had a lot of positive results (Echo the Dolphin brings back so many memories). But why is "Virtual Console" conspicuously left out of the title here. I dont like that...
Jerk Face [GT:xJERKFACEx] @ Dec 24th 2008 11:16AM
Read the end of the first paragraph, guy. You already have them.
Jerk Face [GT:xJERKFACEx] @ Dec 24th 2008 11:06AM
The collection has Streets of Rage Mother-Fucking Two, so that's a seller right there!
longhairbilly @ Dec 25th 2008 5:51PM
Chu Chu Rocket please.
