Prince of Persia series producer, Ben Mattes, tells IGN that he was "expecting a few more virtual pats-on-the-back" for exploring some unbeaten paths in the Prince's latest outing, but said pats (virtual or otherwise) have yet to be felt.
"We set out to keep a few core fundamentals but to re-imagine everything else, discarding some very well entrenched ideas not only about the brand but also about videogames in general," Mattes said. "What surprises me is how little these high level risks seem to be noticed and appreciated as attempts to shake up the industry and push things forward."
Mattes doesn't concede failure – far from it – but does wonder if the games industry "has a stronger appetite for the familiar than it wants to admit."

@CPRxChris
As I wrote earlier:
"The pics are full RGB,HDMI, losseless PNGs."
So no, no VGA (especially that PS3 doesnt support one) nor component.
Anyway I wasn't specially talking about overbrightnes/vashed colors/etc.
It can be mostly corrected by settings in good HDTV.
The problem is TEXTURE QUALITY.
Look for example on clothes or grass.

I don't reward devs who dumb down games for casuals. You better make the next one more challenging and maybe I'll buy it. If there is no challenge, I have no motivation to play a game. Maybe you should have put it on the Wii for that crowd, they'd probably like that dumbed down garbage better.

Game is very nice looking, but the difficulty is way too low, the original PoP (sidescroller) was a classic and it was very difficult. Even the more recent sands of time trilogy was more challenging (and more fun, where is the combat in PoP 2008?)
And yes, entire sections can be completed by simply pressing the "a" button over and over, that isn't a game, its a movie you play by pressing buttons.

I personally do appreciate the "Risks" but I can't pat him on the back because the repetitive nature of the game over shadows everything else... Next time add the "risk" to a more dynamic game. Look at Assassins Creed; Great game. Killer graphic; Really interesting; for the first few hours you play. Then you realize how repetitive it becomes and all the other great stuff just isn't enough to keep you playing....
Is this a Ubisoft issue??

Yes the game industry is full of excuses these days. It's not my fault its the developers fault, its the gamers fault, its the industry's fault. You take Prince of Persia and make it like this and expect everyone to love you for it? .Sure the other Prince of Persia games were hard. You would yell and shout and throw the controller, curse and scream in frustration. But what counted was that you came back an hour later and tried again.I think this is where Nintendo and people like them missed the point.
A game maybe challenging but you always came back for more until you get it right. But you make games that practically holds my hand through out the whole adventure, point out everything for you and make puzzles and problems so simple that a five year old could figure it out, of course it is easier to play but why would i want to? Nintendo keeps making these kind of games that you only want to play for about an 15 minutes and then you go see what is on T.V. I am still playing Resident Evil 4 and God of War to this day and still get a thrill each time.I hope that Nintendo slows down next year. I would hate to see all gaming become like this.

I miss the old prince and setting. Before they made him "x-treme"

Nobody cares less about developers taking "risks", they care about how good a game is or isn't. No free points for effort, sorry.
I love the irony in the last quote, coming from a Ubisoft employee.

The games industry is screwed in any case, I really really don't know if I'm going to buy another console next gen.
All the AAA stuff is often broken out of the box, often disgustingly short, overpriced, makes an overemphasis on graphics and important stuff like AI is still in the dark ages, not to mention that games are getting very samey and are being recycled year in year out by unscrupulous publishers. Seriously, all of the ultrahyped releases I've seen in 2008 that ended up sucking hard in different ways especially after the truly epic production budgets, long waits and scandalous pricing when they do hit the shelves... you really have to wonder.
All the community stuff is bad because of the tools available - I bet we'd see an increase in quality and variety if the console manufacturers were less uptight about giving out devkits. XNA is not "Games without shackles" like MS say it is - there's a lot of very nasty strings and tight regulations attached to it that a lot of people don't necessarily see at first. You want quality indie gaming? Get a PC. In fact, want quality gaming at all? Get a PC.

The Prince of Persia is a game that is to be enjoy for its simplicity and beauty. Stop worrying about not dieing or that its to simply, its a game that a gamer, hardcore or not, can sit down and enjoy. Its beautiful to look especially after you heal the pure grounds and when your moving through the environment its a wonderment that is unseen in a lot of games.
Also I think PoP is a great "gate way game" for certain people, like girlfriends and parents to get into. Its gives them a something that isn't so intimidating like Gears of War 2 or Fallout 3. If your dieing all the time because you can't make a jump can be frustrating.
My point is that it can expand the industry which is good for all of us. And as for a virtual pats-on-the-back to whole heartily give one.
