i don't agree that writing always takes a backseat in videogames, it's just that some designers do not give the writing enough love.
Diablo 2 is ancient, yet it probably had one of the best storylines and endings a game could have, same would be said about starcraft. then again, that's blizzard and they are very story-driven.
Shadow of the collosus and Ico both delivered wonderful endings, no narration needed or anything, those two games get a huge amount of respect from me simply because they managed to tell an epic story, a perfect conclusion, without having 2 hour cut scene endings, which i think is the worst thing you could do to a game (mgs4... wth was that i fell asleep listening to all that fluff).
Games can have amazing endings, all they need is a good story to build up on. oh, dead space? pretty nice ending too.

The very worst ending of all?

The XENOSAGA series. There is no ending more agonizingly terrible, and to twist the knife it took the form of an irritatingly long cutscene.

Agreed. Although I'm sure you're already knowledgable about the backstory behind all the major disruptions to the XENOSAGA series, one of them being that Tetzuyaka's wife, a major script writer for episode one, was not asked to write for episode two because her ideas were too "brainy". This being said, the series concluded as well as can be expected and it was a pretty dramatic finale.

The ending for the original campaign of NWN2 was heinous. Fortunately, they allowed you some closure in the first expansion, but I saw red when the ending was basically "you disappear, giant rock crushes all your friends." And the narration for the slide show was basically read by Ned from Bethesda's Mail Room.

It's not like bad endings are new (hello, original Super Mario Bros), but I think when you have a writing department for a game that's going to be more than 20+ hours of game time, the producers bank on the average gamer abandoning the game midway through as another title comes out that grabs their interest, so there's not a lot of incentive to invest in a good ending when they could frontload the initial story/quests, graphics, and sound.

I see a lot of excuses from those developers and not a single one of them even tried to get anywhere near the truth of the matter.

The problem is that when you have 57 people working for 3 months just to make sure the main characters right ass cheek has been rendered perfectly in HD, other aspects of the game tend to get neglected. For some reason the current gen is all about throwing tons of money & manpower into graphics and advertising, instead of narrative and fun game play, and the latter two suffer because of it.

It's all flash and no substance, and it kinda just ticks me off to read all those whiny developer comments when they're the ones responsible for the problem in the first place...

In some cases I agree with your sentiment. I agree that game play, story and graphics should all have equal priority when making a game. However, saying the only reason that storytelling is lacking is because of graphics is to broad. The truth is no matter what medium of entertainment there will be people and companies who are better at what they do than others.

The dark knight is a perfect example of a movie that retold a story we already knew and still entertained us. As long as a game manages to entertain you that's all that matters. If you have the best story in the world but the game is broken or the graphics are horrible it will be equally as bad as a game with perfect HD graphics and a bad story.

It's like a football team needs offense, defense and special teams to win the super bowl. You never see one dimensional teams that go all the way. In some areas it's just not there but it doesn't make them a bad team, rather, it makes them an incomplete team.

Surely the Kingdom Hearts series must go down as some of the most fantastic story-telling of the last decade, in terms of gaming, at least.

For me, both games had highly satisfactory endings, while at the same time, leaving SLIGHT hints at potential sequels. Of course, those hints were left throughout the game itself, too, which is even better.

In my perfect world each game in a series would be it's own individual story. Look at the Die hard movie franchise how each movie had it's own plot and story but you had the sub-plots and characters to tie it all together in addition to the evolution of the characters.

Khan brought another great example in the Star Wars franchise. All those movies are great as a series and as individual movies, All with conflict and resolution to go along with an overarching story theme as well as individual character arcs. That's some mighty big shoes to fill as the original Star Wars trilogy is the pinnacle of special effects and story telling for a movie series rivaled only by (another Lucas series of movies) the Indiana Jones series.

I like the direction Uncharted is going in terms of story and the ending of the first game. Now we know who Drake is and what drives him so each game can just be a new adventure for him. As much flack as the Mario games take for always having the same story of the princess being kidnapped they also do a great job of story telling and standing on their own. That's probably the best combination of game play and story in gaming history. Just look how many different ways the same story has been told and how it always still manages to be interesting.

In gaming you don't need both game play and story to be great to have an awesome game. Gears 1 probably had the most cliche and predictable story ever but the game was incredible because of the way it played. I felt Epic tried to force a story down my throat in Gears 2 that ended up leaving a sour taste in my mouth. The absolute worst part was (surprise) the ending. Not only was there no real closure for the second act, no ah-ha moment (where you just get it) and there was also no feeling of conclusion of the game. I didn't feel like I just beat a game - I felt like I watched another third of a really long movie. Having all three games follow a strict chronological order was a mistake - make them go together but also stand on their own.

The thing about FFVII is just ridiculous. We are talking about one of the best (if not the) best ever example of a brilliant storyline with a decent ending.

Mega Man 2, an example of a good ending? Really?

It was at best a variation on the standard "enemy fortress/spaceship/island self-destructs, hero walks away, roll credits" ending that was bog standard through most of the 8-bit and 16-bit eras. (The variation in MM2's case? It takes him an entire year to walk home.)

Mega Man 3 had a far more satisfying ending.

I'm a JRPG fan, so I only come across lame ending when playing RE4, RE0, Halo, Mario, Zelda,(except Winwaker) Mass effect and the like. I say JRPGS and suda51 (minus NMH) have all the good endings

Best ending ever: Prince of Persia The Two Thrones. Especially for someone who's played through the series.

--MAJOR SPOILER ALERT--

The final battle hits a climax with a truly cathartic gameplay experience, but the real flash of brilliance is the way the final closing cut scene ties into the opening cinematic of Sands of Time. Sheer unadulterated genius! I've played tons of other games that I generally considered better overall, but this ending was just unbeatable.

Worst ending ever goes to Rampage for the NES. I remember playing that game for hours (there was no save function) so that I could see the ending. What was my reward? A black screen with one word. "Congratulations". I'm old...

Personally I enjoyed FF7's ending. It left that question of "was mankind wiped off the planet?", but peace had come to the planet.

Sure enough after the Compilation of FF7 was released, we can now confirm that Holy did NOT kill off everyone. It was a great ending though, lot's of suspense and tension. It was an ending that got everyone talking. The main conflict was the death of the planet, not the survival of humanity. So in that regard, it was addressed in the ending. Not sure what that guy was talking about.

Besides, FF8 had a way better ending. Now-a-days, I think
Assassin's Creed - even if it's left open
Crisis Core: FF7 - ending that brought me to tears
Lost: Via Domus - very huge WTF?! moment, even though the game sucked, the ending was worth it.
Star Wars: TFU - The 'ending' being the last 10% of the game, so the final level and the surrounding cutscenes.
Overlord - Absolutely amazing twist and tied up story.

*sigh* Trying not to go into crazy psychotic fanboy mode here and start screaming, "OMGWTFDAIRYQUEEN FFVII IS BEST ENDING EVAR!!!!1!!1" so here we go...
The reason FFVII's ending was goos was because one (of the many) main themes that permeated throughout the game was the idea that humanity is the most force on the planet. Shin-Ra is literally sucking the life-force and souls of everything living out of the planet as an energy source. There is a mess of diologue relating to whether humity is right for its comsumption or not. The idea was that the unleashed lifestream is the will of the planet itself pushing away meteor, but the planet also finally has the power to rid itself of Midgar and all of those pesky humans. Flash forward 500 years and we see that while Red XIII is still alive Midgar itself is gone and we are given something to think about. Did Earth kill humanity? Did it simply destroy Misgar, the source of the most corrupt of humans (also leading to why Marlene was moved out of the city)? Did humans deserve to die?
These questions are what leave you at the ending in a state of shock and give you something to ponder over long after you have put the game away and moved on to something else. That is also why open endings are not always a bad thing. The worst thing to ever happen to that game was its movie sequel.

Terranigma has the best ending in a game I've ever seen. There's some serious frustration and you have control of the character as you realize what's happened. I very much took it out by running into a lot of walls before going ahead with letting the credits roll where I learned that I was wrong to think all was for naught. Then I cried like a little bitch.

If you want to know what an awesome storyline is for any RPG game, go look at Final Fantasy 6 (Final Fantasy 3 in Japan). The one with the green-haired beauty and a storyline that could easily be mistaken for a movie.

Few (if any) games lately seem to have the wonder of games already made.

So there's a simple formula:

Action Game = simple easy ending

RPG = must have some type of decent ending, possibly open to a sequel

Other = short and sweet

Soul Reaver = Make a PS1 game with 'To Be Continued' at the climax, then make a PS2 sequel with 'To Be Continued' type of ending AGAIN just to piss off any remaining loyal fans. Finally wrap it up in a 'final' game that still leaves a bunch of loose ends so that it 'may' be explored in a future game, as if 5 games in an action-game series isn't enough storyline.

My current vote for one of the best endings goes to The Witcher, not because of the gameplay portion (I actually thought it was rather easy and kinda lame) but the awesome cutscene at the end. It just came out of nowhere and totally blows you away with the detail, cinematography, and utter Geralt badass-ry. An ending should reward a player, and whether that means a crazy combat sequence or a utterly amazing cutscene the one thing it has to be is different and unique from the rest of the game.
