Holidaze 2008: Boxing Day deals, for Canadians only
Hey there, Canada. We've been told Boxing Day is a special day for consumerism for you guys -- something like the equivalent of Black Friday here in the US. Our Canadian comrade at X3F thought to remind us, and additionally pointed us towards the sales papers for several major Canadian retailers:
... US readers, are you still here? We figured you might be. There's an accessories deal going on right now until January 10, with at least 10% off all listed items. Highlights include DualShock 3 for $41, Xbox 360 wireless controller for $37, Wii component cables for $15 and Guitar Hero 3 Les Paul wireless guitars (Xbox 360 and Wii) for $40.
PlayStation 2
- Best Buy
- Future Shop
- Walmart
- Toys R Us
- HMV (Thanks, Tom)

Don't Canadian games cost like 10 dollars more than our games? So these deals are like at our prices now. Eh?
Dr. @ Dec 25th 2008 7:39AM
Yeah, what's that aboot? :(
Though with the exchange rate right now, it's somewhat reasonable. When we were even it was just bullshit.
LaughingTarget @ Dec 25th 2008 8:51AM
Just get rid of Quebec and you'll be paying US prices. Getting that French translation is costly, let them pay it.
Xav de Matos @ Dec 25th 2008 10:21AM
Games stopped costing $10 more three or five years ago.
Kevin @ Dec 25th 2008 11:36AM
Uusally, XBox/PS3 games are CAD60 and PC games are CAD50. I'm pretty sure that's the same as in the US.
After all the local taxes, that works out to be about USD55 and USD45. (Exchange at 1:0.8 and 13% tax).
Chainblast @ Dec 25th 2008 12:44PM
Game prices between the US and Canada began to equalize around November 2007 when the Canadian dollar went on a run. Despite the huge swing downwards in 2008, most prices on game products have remained the same as in the US, except a few notable releases costing $5 more such as Fallout 3, Call of Duty: World at War and Wratch of the Lich King.
Boxing day deals are generally never as good as Black Friday, especially this year. Then again our economy didn't implode.
Lavat @ Dec 25th 2008 1:20PM
Tax Economy, USD, APR intrest rate with no fixed financing...CAD...
Semantics.
Does Canada have a Army or not. Otherwise it is hell on earth with alot of beer and bacon on the ground.
Penguin Warlord @ Dec 25th 2008 9:59PM
No army, lots of beer and bacon? that sounds like heaven to me...
Inect @ Dec 26th 2008 8:44PM
It's a cold heaven.
knighty (GT: ZeraKnight) @ Dec 25th 2008 7:41AM
I figure it's as good a place as any: Merry Christmas fellow Joystiqians :)
aj @ Dec 25th 2008 8:27AM
I'm not leaving the house on Boxing Day. I don't feel like getting shot over cheap plastic crap.
holyice7 @ Dec 25th 2008 11:49AM
Shot on Boxing Day?
I don't claim to understand Canadian culture, but it sounds like the type of sales holiday where you'd be challenged to a rousing round of fisticuffs over the eventual ownership of temporarily cheapened goods.
I don't doubt that there would still be tramplings, though.
Huey2k2 @ Dec 25th 2008 12:49PM
Last boxing day there was a girl shot in downtown Toronto on boxing day.
So yes people get shot over boxing day.
JB @ Dec 25th 2008 6:28PM
I thought you guys had gun control up there?
aj @ Dec 25th 2008 7:48PM
Americans have gun control. And how's that working out for you?
At least we don't have a war on drugs, war on terror, and people on TV who keep trying to convince us that there's a war on Christmas.
Haggard @ Dec 25th 2008 8:08PM
@aj
We have all that in the UK - not goin' so good.
matt @ Dec 25th 2008 10:30PM
She was shot in a mixup on the street where she got caught in the crossfire. she wasn't shot over the price of a dvd player.
Gurbinder @ Dec 26th 2008 5:47PM
What are the chances of you in particular being shot on boxing day? I was out until 1pm and I am still part of the living otherwise I wouldn't be able to type this comment. You must be hated or something.
Inect @ Dec 26th 2008 8:45PM
I'm pretty sure that the girl died 2 or 3 years ago. But still sad.
Roto13 @ Dec 25th 2008 9:29AM
"Nintendo Wii Points Card - (Reg. CDN$ 24.99)"
So ridiculous that some people charge that much for a Wii Points card. Most places I've seen charge $20.00, though. (I am in Canada.)
Linkario @ Dec 25th 2008 9:36AM
Heeey hoser.
EgoCheck616 @ Dec 25th 2008 9:52AM
Sigh. You know your celebrities are piss poor when a blog uses the same photo every year for it's Boxing Day post.
Shmil @ Dec 25th 2008 10:15AM
Hey don't feel bad, you canadians gave us jim carey, and we thank you for it.
Snap Count @ Dec 25th 2008 11:08AM
Get yout shit together buddy, Bob and Doug are not celebrities.... They are cultural icons.
Merry Christmas all...
Brandon @ Dec 25th 2008 12:15PM
Hear hear, Snap Count!
unboring @ Dec 25th 2008 1:01PM
also keanu reeves, mike myers , etc. , wow lots of typical american "blame canada" elistist bs here as expected.
guess what? you have 10x canada's population. wouldn't you expect a lot more actors there? It doesn't mean however that great talent hasn't come from canada. Just in a smaller proportion. Aren't Statistics great! This retarded american elitism is one reason canadians generally dislike americans.
Shmil @ Dec 25th 2008 1:18PM
@ unboring,
what the fuck dude calm down. You're just racist against americans. there was no elitism going on here.
AirIntake @ Dec 25th 2008 3:05PM
Americans are a race now?
Haggard @ Dec 25th 2008 8:09PM
Canada is the only place on the planet I've experienced warm rain. Also, you've given us Rush, so I'm not going to argue.
slycooper_rocker [anti-panda death murder squadron force five] @ Dec 26th 2008 1:33AM
agreed with haggard!
Nietha @ Dec 26th 2008 3:51AM
@Haggard - I live in Canada and the only place I've experienced warm rain is in Hawaii =)
Haggard @ Dec 26th 2008 10:10AM
@Nietha
Well, I live in Manchester, England. It's world-renowned for awful weather for a reason xD
BB @ Dec 25th 2008 10:00AM
Merry Christmas?
Wiinterfang @ Dec 25th 2008 10:31AM
Duh!
Riley @ Dec 25th 2008 10:13AM
I love the tags: amazon, canada, canadians, hockey, molson, moooooooooose, no-one-reads-these-anyways
The Alex @ Dec 25th 2008 10:25AM
Thanks for showing us Canadians some love, Joystiq.
Remember, we've given gamers the gifts of Facebreaker and Too Human this year... If that's not love, then I don't know what is...
invaderalex @ Dec 25th 2008 10:49AM
I GOT A SEGA SATURN FOR CHIRSTMAS!
SO AWESOME!!!!!!!!!
Obie @ Dec 25th 2008 11:56AM
OH MY GOD!
Nintendo-SIXTYFOOOOOUR!
Wiinterfang @ Dec 25th 2008 12:12PM
You better get a Saturn, if you didn't wanted me to come down that mountain and kick your ass.
Piddy @ Dec 25th 2008 10:52AM
I got a SanDisk 8GB Memory Stick Pro Duo for $30 and MK vs DC $40 online at Best Buy yesterday, don't even have to wake up on the 26th (even though Best Buy is across the street where I live). Can't wait to throw the 3.75 GB School Wikipedia full on there so I can settle those bar disputes when there's no WiFi access.
Obie @ Dec 25th 2008 11:36AM
You're not my buddy, guy!
Mr Khan @ Dec 25th 2008 11:37AM
Despite being American, i shall scour some of the stores.
It's a bit early (it was just released) but i am going to try and find Metalocalypse Season 2 DVD for cheap. Certainly some stores should be eager to liquidate inventories in this environment (even if they aren't going under), and hopefully that inventory is a warehouse full of Metalocalypse
Wiinterfang @ Dec 25th 2008 12:13PM
Thanks for the spam.
Merry Christmas Asshole.
Matthew @ Dec 25th 2008 12:37PM
i wish it was just random, no flyers.
You just go and they sell remaining inventory at retarded prices.
It's a free for all though, last year I got a Samsung Syncmaster 226BW for less tghan $200, a digital camera for my sister for about $75 off and a 50-pack black dvd pack for $7.99.
Thraka @ Dec 25th 2008 2:45PM
@ Roto
Regarding the Wii points card - I picked up Animal Crossing w/Wii Speak + the card and got $15 off a couple weeks back - if that's still going on tomorrow, then it's a good deal if you want both.
refinedsugar @ Dec 25th 2008 2:55PM
The plug for amazon.ca is pretty cold. There's better deals elsewhere.
tom @ Dec 25th 2008 3:05PM
You guys are missing the HMV deals.
Gears of war 2
little big planet
Prince of persia (for ps3 and 360)
mario galaxy
super smash bros brawl
mario party 8
all for $29.99
source:

hmv probably has the best sales, the dark night dvd for $10, and 300 in blu ray for the same price, are some other good sales from this place.
bluesky_v2.01 @ Dec 25th 2008 3:23PM
Yes, finally . . . some love for Canada.
Diskoboy7 @ Dec 25th 2008 9:27PM
Personally, I would've used a picture of Terrence & Phillip....
You're not my buddy, pal.
matt @ Dec 25th 2008 10:30PM
i picked up a 46" sharp aquos LCD from the futureshop.ca "boxing day" sale on christmas eve for $999
