Ah, Brawl; the forever game.

Brawl is the first in the series for me (I gave up on the N64 long before SSB was ever released) so for me it is already the best. It's entrenched in my mind and I don't think any circumstance will ever change that fact, especially not a 1200 point download. I'd rather spend that coin on more worthwhile games, such as (insert your favourite VC game here) Gunstar Heroes or Sonic 2.

The original is much more palatable now that Brawl is out, as the original was the slowest of the lot, so playing it felt very jarring against the lighting-quick Melee. Against the well-balanced Brawl, however, it fits much better

Plus it's the only game in the series where both Kirby and Ness are ridiculously overpowered, and it's 1P mode had a charm that was never really beaten

I highly disagree with the original being the "slowest of the lot." It may be slower than Melee, but Brawl is a different story. Brawl is floatier than both its predecessors and lacks Z-canceling/L-canceling. Not only that, fast-falling in Brawl (pressing down to make your character fall faster in the air) is almost nonexistent. It's there, and it helps, but compared to Melee's and the original's fast-falling, it's more of a "fall-faster" than a "fast-fall".

I totally agree with metayoshi. Another example of the lack of control in newer versions of SSB with no use of cancelling moves and average falling which is perfect in the original allowing for a better tactical playing game.

I'll but it for nostalgia's sake if it's not 1200 points. It was the first N64 game I ever bought, after all.

There are a few redeeming factors to the original; Luigi, Kirby and Ness all being extremely badass, board the platforms is still probably my favorite Smash Bros. minigame, and some of the levels are still high quality (why Mushroom Kingdom and Saffron City weren't in Melee is beyond me).

All that being said, however, I think Nintendo made a huge mistake in not releasing this before Brawl. I know that if they released it, say, a week or two before Brawl came out I would have eaten it up for nostalgia's sake, but at this point it's sort of a "why bother?" type thing. They released Metroid and Super Metroid in the weeks leading up to Metroid Prime 3 and Super Mario Bros. 3 a couple weeks before Mario Galaxy, so it really doesn't make sense to me as to why they didn't do the same thing for Smash Bros., but oh well.

I'll buy it eventually. Whenever Nintendo allows for games to be played off the SD cards, it'll probably be the first VC game I download, as a matter of fact.
I always loved the original. I think I like Brawl more, but I was one of the few who preferred SSB to SSBM. I also have a lot more memories tied to the original than I do to Melee or even Brawl, so there is a nostalgia thing going on for me, probably.

The main advantage it has is 2 or 3 awesome stages that were never put in melee or brawl.

Prolly this. Nintendo needs to make old stages and characters *coughMewtwocough* available in Brawl as DLC (either as perma-downloads that can be used on various Wiis via an SD card and/or a free yet limited-time download thing, rotating characters/stages[/Pokemon from Pokeballs] out on a 2/3/4-month basis).

My friends and I still get together on weekends to "get smashed" and play the original SSB over the more recent titles. I think it has to do with playing the game so much that you've seen everything that the smaller roster of characters, levels, and items has to offer. I'm not saying I don't appreciate the improved graphics and options that accompany Melee and Brawl. It's just that this game doesn't move so insanely fast that you question - "Wait... what just happened???" Although, there are still moments that the game surprises me when someone has an "epic comeback" in a stock match. None of this "smash ball instant-kill" nonsense can prevail in this classic title. I love having to pause the game to explain to everyone else how the items backfired or how the stage managed to kill us. Good times. Good times.

I'm just wondering how it feels to play the game without the N64 controller. Maybe Club Nintendo North America will offer the N64 classic controller for the Wii if we get stiffed on the one for the SNES :)

I'm like JC Fletcher on this one. There's no practical reason to buy this game when I own (and love) both of the superior sequels.

However, the original SSB came out right as I was graduating from high school and living with friends. Needless to say, it was a dorm-room staple, a party-game extraordinaire. I want it in my VC collection just for the good memories it conjures up.

The only reason I can think of would be nostalgia. Occasionally, someone will suggest, "Hey, let's play the original Smash Bros." And I can't think of a single good reason to when I have Brawl, and even Melee. Sure, I loved the hell out of that game back in the day. I remember getting it the day it came out. I even had to go to a further away Toys 'R' Us to get it. And it provided endless hours of entertainment. But then they came out with two subsequent versions that improved on the formula in every way. Why would I want to go back to playing a version that looks alot worse, and not only does it not have Final Smashes (something I could survive without if need be), but it's even missing B-forward moves. How could I play Samus without her missile?

Although everyone complains about how nostalgia is affecting our views on older games (although that's not the only reason many older games are better than modern games which focus too much on online play and graphics), I think that nostalgia is a valid reason for liking a game; playing a game is about the experience as a whole, and if an old game brings back good memories which make us smile, then its OK to like it for that. Of course, that doesn't mean we can go around saying "This game is better than that one because of nostalgia lawl".

The only reason I would love to get this game is so that I can play it with a Gamecube controller. That's really my only motivation since I do have a working N64 with a working copy of SSB, and I use an emulator sometimes to play it with a Wiimote or Classic Controller connected through bluetooth.

I'll probably play it a little bit, and then just go back to Brawl and Melee. They just have superior mechanics and are overall just better games than the original in my opinion.

Actually, esposch, emulators are just as much piracy as a WAD injector. As using a WAD injector is, in fact, using an emulator, as the Virtual Console channel you inject it into is an emulator. So really, there is no difference other than the efficiency.

I'm not arguing for or against either method, by the way. Just saying that if one is piracy, they both are.

I was trying to say that reputable sources such as Homebrew Browser and Wiibrew will have emulators, but only dodgy sources have WADs.

I know that I'll be downloading this when it comes out. It's not neccesarily for nostalgia, but there are some stages in the old one that I really like and aren't in the new ones. Though I admit I do have fond memories of the original.

Any confirmation on the download size? I just tried to download both LostWinds and World of Goo today but couldn't get either because I didn't have enough memory space, and all of the crappy games that I deleted to make room were only 2 or 3 blocks. I would hate to not be able to get this game, too.

I like to buy some games just to avoid grabbing discs - lazy and sad but true. Being able to flip from game to game without shuffling discs is great. I won't pay $12 for it, but for $10 I might consider deleting something... and I will resist the urge to begin a storage solution rant.

Honestly, if I'm going to have to delete stuff to make room for this, I'd rather play Brawl. The original Smash Bros has a lot of nostalgia, but it is too ridiculous at this point...

Sorry for double posting, but... seriously, I know it hasn't even been a year, but they need to begin work on another Smash Bros. I say this only because these games take a lot of time and, if they started in the next few months, it wouldn't be ready until 2010 or 2011 anyways... unfortunately, Sakurai said this is the last one, which is why he tried to include so much. But he said the same thing about Melee. I'll be honest, they tailored Brawl to casual gamers' needs a bit too much, and as well balanced as they tried to make it, the physics engine is worse than Melee and there are fewer advanced movements (I've been able to teach the most casual gamers nearly every "advanced movement" in a matter of an hour in this game). I love Brawl, but it's nowhere near perfect, and every one in this series has had its own strengths. The original laid the groundwork. Melee added balance, bettered the physics engine and content. Brawl drastically added content along with adding "finishing moves", but simplified gameplay.

Here's what the next should do, if they make it: First, keep some of the simplicity of Brawl, but deepen it so that there are many hidden advanced techniques. Fix online; leaderboards and such should be added, among other features (in fact, plenty of unlockables could be tied to online accomplishments). Bring back many more old stages while making lots of new stages. Add more to the stage builder. Unlockable items. Obviously increase content even more so (without cutting characters this time; the more the merrier). Last? DLC. They would come in packs priced according to what is in them, probably usually themed. Include everything from characters to stages to items to stage builder obstacles to music. Seriously, a few bucks here and there, they'd make more money, we'd have more to play with over time... win-win. If you don't want certain packs, you don't have to pay for them. Oh, and for those who use a certain character from a download pack that their friend doesn't have? You can store that character on your Wiimote to take to a friend's house. I know I'm asking for a lot... but seriously, games need progress. Even if there is another in the series, I'm not expecting all this. But I am expecting some things to be improved.

Actually, Sakurai, in an interview (I think with Nintendo Power), said it is so hard to bring people from so many teams together, something with this much content is too hard to pull together that he thinks it could possibly be the last Smash Bros ever. This was said about Melee though, which gave him shock when Brawl was first announced, because he didn't think he was doing anything for this series again. Anyways, I'd still be surprised if it's the last one, but I wouldn't expect they'd do another until the next console gen.

Man, i'll be sooo picking this one up

When i was in high school, i couldn't afford any kind of consoles, so emulators where my salvation back in the day (and now also, who am I kidding) and my bro and i played this game to death on project64.

'll be picking this one, for the nostalgia factor, and because I love the original Captain Falcon

I hated, but really really hated how they changed Captain Falcons melee attack

That elbow melee attack just sucks hard balls!!!! so does Mario melee attack, I loved more the super inflated fist rather than today's fire palm. Resembled a lot Mario's main attack on Mario RPG (loved that game also) and I was hopping they'd change it back on Brawl, shame it didn't happened.

Also, Starfox ship stage is waaaaaay better on the original than in Melee, I loved to do so many combos on the ships tail, many time I just comboed my foes till they reached 400% or so on damage, and now on Melee I harldy can combo someone

I must say, I like more the original to Melee, but love more Brawl

Brawl > original > Melee

I'll be getting this... I've gone off brawl, because getting friends over to play is too hard, wifi with anyone other than them is as bad as playing the cpu's (too easy!), Tourneys are always full of crap like; "oh no I can't win with items on because they give n00bs the chance to have fun and win once in a while" and "oh no I keep losing on this stage and it's letting other people have a turn at winning", and finally, the Aussie server sucks balls.

I have all 3 versions of Smash Bros. and bought them all on their respective launch days. my cousins and i have played each version, but it is the N64 original we ALWAYS come back to. Dont get me wrong I love Melee and Brawl but there is something about the original that neither those ones can get back for me. Perhaps it is the originality of it. Whatever it is, my N64 is beginning to chutter now, it has lived long enough playing that one game, so when this comes out on virtual console i will defo get it.

The original SSB on N64 which ive had for at least 5 years takes the cake for me so far. The "slower paced" style of the game i much prefer as there is actually a sense of the player being able to fully control their character. The newer SSB's havent done it for me, they are very quick and almost makes them button bashing games where the characters move so fast it just becomes a battle of random kicks and punches and not as much control as the original. Some might prefer the faster pace and yes i know u can still control it but i much prefer the original controls and pace. Makes for more tactical playing in the original.

OK. I haven't seen this comment yet, so maybe I'm completely wrong. In my opinion, the original is more skill based. People who have played the N64 version for many many hours will consistently beat someone who has played it for only a couple hours. I just haven't seen that sort of skill come out in Brawl. It's aimed more at the casual player in that sometimes people can luck into wins.

Do I have this opinion just because I haven't played Brawl enough to be "skilled"? Should I get back to work?

I think its possibly both, i havent played brawl that much (i.e under 20 hours of gameplay) so that my skill in the game isnt that great even though i am fairly good on N64 ssb (which ive played for years). Therefore im not completely writing off brawl just yet, but from what ive played i do think brawl is a little more luck and button bashing than skill in a way.
