We trust the collective PlayStation Home-playing community about as far as we can throw them, but we can't help but agree with a recent San Francisco Chronicle article that criticizes the "game's" ridiculously strict chat censorship policy. The article explores the case of Michael Marsh, who attempted to start a gay/straight alliance club, only to find that the words gay, lesbian and bisexual (all "preferred terms" in the gay community) were being blocked by the profanity filter; a policy Marsh worries could encourage players to think of them as pejorative terms.
The filter doesn't just apply an unflinching amount of restriction to terms describing sexual preference -- "Christ" and "Jew" are also given the asterisk treatment, and even "Hello" gets blocked for its implementation of the dreaded "h-e-double-hockey-sticks". An SCEA spokesperson responded by saying that "user behavior and feedback" will help guide their changes during the beta process.
What do you guys think? Can Home users be trusted to utter the names of religious figures and issue polite salutations to one another?

Wow... clearly, Sony's censorship team is comprised of the same members that were part of Sonic Team when they made Phantasy Star Online. Censorship fail. Lemme guess, you can't say Saturday either?

You mean we can't even bag out gays?
And even funnier... they can't be gay in Home all due to a chat filter.

All they need is a context-sensitive filter. Simple!

This censorship sounds ALMOST over the top... almost... except for the fact that I'm so damn tired of hearing all the bullcrap that people drop online all the time- despite being limiting, it might be a welcome change.

Correct me if I am wrong but is there no voice ability in HOME? I mean if all you can do is text chat then welcome to PC gaming circa 1998 PS3 owners!

I never really saw the need for people to have to identify who they are from the other life. I thought the internet was to be a place without the visual or outside identification. Then again the community is already starting to enforce itself.
I just want to hold a meeting with my clan in Home and set up a Kill list for all the glitchers in MGO. As far as anything else goes...They can do whatever they want.

In some sense, the internet is an escape-- but usually an escape from your life, and not who you are as a person.
Let's say (hypothetical situation here!) you're a gay who lives in a place where gays aren't exactly accepted. Instead of going online where you pretend not to be gay, you go online to pretend you're not constantly belittled and attacked for it.
Or, barring that (no, my glasses aren't entirely rose-tinted!), you go online to hang out with people who are /like you/; ie, you find a community.
Jus' sayin'.

Oh come on Sony. You've made some fucking brilliant new gaming bits that you haven't quite perfected yet.
Remote Play? Home?
It's as if they announce really good things but then strip them away before launch until its something that I don't frankly care about any more.
Please fix Home. There is so much wrong with it but so much potential.
Now I'm going to watch my John Cleese boxset I got for Xmas.

Reminds me of an Autoracing forum I used to post; once, they decided to try one of this filters.
It was odd when racing fanatics could not type the word "cockpit". The filter was disabled in two days.

Home is made of fail.
I say let it die a slow painful death of lack of usage. Only time I was on it, all it was was crowded bowling lanes, mental midgets, a shopping mall that used nothing but real money for useless crap and a movie theater that played the trailer and music video for Twilight OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN...

Why does anyone even care about Sony's failed hackneyed attempt at a Second Life Clone......
let's move on....
The Beta glitches and overall "Meh-ness" of it .....left such a bad image that I will probably never go near the program ever again.

Anyone remember playing Phantasy Star Online and discovering you could not say "Saturday", because it had "turd" in the middle? Or even better "shoes", because it had "hoes" in it.

Merry ******mas everyone!
For those of you that haven't seen it, the Japanese Home is FAR better than the US version. Having spent considerable time on both, the atmosphere of the JP Home comes off closer to the original vision of what Home is supposed to be.
The main square is a serene, and larger area than the US one. The first thing a visitor would notice is that there is (thankfully) no outdoor dance club (which is one of the main catalysts for the obnoxious behavior seen on the US home). Instead, there are 2 large screens showing off a game previews as well as current and upcoming PS3/PSP accessories and feature updates. Other noticeable differences include the theater with FOUR different screens showing previews or specials (gran tourismo tv) (as opposed to the single US screen). Also, you can tour the Famitsu offices which includes a bar, sitting area, special TV with developer and famitsu editor interviews, and a fantastic recreation of the real life Famitsu main offices upstairs.
Namco has their own region with classic arcade games (pac-man, galaga, digdug, etc), their own preview screen (showing Tekken 6) and some mini games including a match-making loveseat (at least thats what it appeared to be)
Other differences include a "Siren" themed environment, the Mall (mostly identical to the US one but with more items in the shops), Bowling Ally (much more stylish than ours and with Namco arcade games), as well as a few other areas promoting first party games.
The problem with the US version of Home (aside from the people in it) is that it places the primary focus on social interaction as opposed to gaming. The Japanese side got it right and I hope that in the future Home will be a little less "3d myspace for douchebags" and a little more virtual Tokyo Game Show.
