Super Smash Bros. sparring on Japanese Virtual Console in January
"B-b-b-but I don't live in Japan!" We know, dear reader -- despite the fact that a great deal of the world's population takes up residence in the Land of the Rising Sun, we understand that there are plenty of those who don't. This second group likely just thinks we're taunting them with the information that Super Smash Bros., one of the most requested titles for the Virtual Console, will be landing on the service in Japan sometime in early January.
However, take solace in the fact that this might mean that it'll be hitting North American e-store shelves sometime soon. Let's just hope that our price for the game doesn't mimic Japan's -- 1,200 points (as opposed to the usual 1,000 for an N64 game) is ridiculous, and we absolutely would not pay it. Well, maybe we'd pay it, but we definitely wouldn't feel good about it. Fine -- we'd probably be ecstatic, but we'd totally pout for like, a minute or two. Take that, Nintendo!

I loved this game, but I lost it. I still have my N64 though.
If it comes to the US, I'll probably pick it up.
Wiinterfang @ Dec 28th 2008 2:05PM
BOARD THE PLATFORMS!!!

Syn @ Dec 28th 2008 2:10PM
Or you know... Buy Brawl which is the same game.
Jerk Face [GT:xJERKFACEx] @ Dec 28th 2008 2:23PM
Thank you. I was going to say the same thing. The game has only improved over the years with very little change to game play. Why would anyone pick that up if they have Brawl? And if you're excited about Smash Bros., you ahve Brawl already.
Wiinterfang @ Dec 28th 2008 2:29PM
Well if you like to own with Kirby, Ness and Pikachu then this game is for you, also some people my like to have their complete series on the wii, you can take in count the nostalgia factor too and you can say the same thing about the twilight princess but ocarina is still worth playing :P.
brickwalker0 @ Dec 28th 2008 2:40PM
the old one seems to be more casual friendly, as ive had quite a few family members and friends ask if i still had my N64 version.
they dont like the new smash bros pace of gameplay as much as the original.
Sheppy (of the Fidlious Clan of Wong) @ Dec 28th 2008 2:46PM
But Ocarina of Time is worth playing much more than Twilight Princess.
Do gotta say, I agree with this general sentiment. In iterative franchises like fighting games or sports titles, there is zero reason to go back. The new version often has all that and a bag of chips, and a cold beer, and a space heater to fight back the cold winter midwestern winds. Of course exceptions to this rule do exist like Marvel vs. Capcom 2 where most people would be well advised to jump back to MvC1 just for some fucking gameplay balance but I digress... Onslaught>jOO!
Roto13 @ Dec 28th 2008 3:03PM
Except they're not the same game. It's like saying there's no reason to play Street Fighter II if you have Street Fighter III or IV.
Evan @ Dec 28th 2008 3:33PM
As a long time smash bro, I have to say that the original is vastly different. The physics are totally different(more low-grav feeling), and that is what makes up 50% of the Super Smash Bros. games. If you play the original, and get used to the physics, then play Brawl, then you will notice the difference immediately.
Moptimus Slime @ Dec 28th 2008 4:48PM
Thats because Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess are actually different. Different mechanics, different weapons, different dungeons. The only thing that's changed with SSB is the amount of characters and stages
Sora @ Dec 28th 2008 2:21PM
I'll just stick with Melee, thanks.

Melee > Brawl > Smash Bros.
Chris @ Dec 28th 2008 3:22PM
False.
Smash Bros. > Melee > Brawl
In my opinion, of course.
Young_Nastyman @ Dec 28th 2008 2:31PM
"In my opinion, of course"
Your opinion is 100% correct
brickwalker0 @ Dec 28th 2008 2:41PM
if Brawl's online was much better (rankings, voice chat, no lag, etc) then it would be my favorite.
Mr Khan @ Dec 28th 2008 3:27PM
Each has their own merits. For a Kirby user like myself, Smash Bros is fun for just kicking ass. Melee still has the most engrossing multiplayer, but Brawl has the features, and is a completionist's dream come true

o well time to play it on my n64 and not worry about paying anymoney at all because the virtual console is pointless cuz i already own all the great nintendo classics WHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA!
Haggard @ Dec 28th 2008 2:37PM
Yeah, why should companies try and sell things when some people already have them!
Fight the power!
Roto13 @ Dec 28th 2008 3:04PM
Enjoy your old VHS tapes.
Young_Nastyman @ Dec 28th 2008 3:14PM
I laugh at your VHS tape players, everyone knows it's all about the 16mm reel to reel projectors

I always thought paintings on rocks were the best video format.
Kevlar @ Dec 28th 2008 3:53PM
Paintings on rocks? All you kids with your newfangled "videos" and "pictures".
I'll stick to watching water flow downstream, or grass blowing in the wind, thankyouverymuch.
Oh, and my porn is way more realistic, too. (Or, as I like to call it, "hole in my neighbor's hut")
Haggard @ Dec 28th 2008 4:05PM
Pah, huts?
Real men sleep on jagged rocks outside.
Kye says: I hate friend codes...Nintendo! @ Dec 29th 2008 9:07AM
Jagged rocks!?
I used to dreeeeam of having jagged rocks!
You kids nowadays with your luxuries!
tmmoore_nc @ Dec 28th 2008 2:36PM
Ocarina of Time is 1200 points in Japan. It's 1000 points in North America. Just throwing that out there.
Kelly @ Dec 28th 2008 6:49PM
I don't know how Points work on Wii, but when i was a Nintendo fanboy with my Gamecube i also subscribed to Nintendo Power And They gave me Ocarina of Time, Majora's mask, The Legend of Zelda, The legend of Zelda 2, and a demo of the Wind Waker all on one disc. It was awesome and free. I'm not even sure if you had to subscribe to the magazine either, all you had to do was sign up online and they sent it to you.
tmmoore_nc @ Dec 28th 2008 8:47PM
Yup, I got that Collection. Actually, it was the sole reason I signed up for Nintendo Power again so I could get that Collection.
Roto13 @ Dec 29th 2008 2:49AM
There were a couple of ways to get that Legend of Zelda: Collector's Edition disc you're referring to. Subscribe to Nintendo Power, register a certain number of games, or buy a new GameCube.
Or do what I did and strongarm it from a friend who owes you a game. *pelvic thrust*
Sheppy (of the Fidlious Clan of Wong) @ Dec 28th 2008 2:48PM
Poor Nintendo still doesn't have that sense of timing. This would have been GREAT a month before Brawl. As it stands now it's like a $12 reminder that Brawl is on the shelves.
Snowblind @ Dec 28th 2008 5:11PM
I think a lot of people pointed that out at the time, I remember saying myself that it'd be cool to play the original again, if they put it up on the VC.
Seemed like a very obvious thing to do, can't say I'm interested in going back to it now.
DCBlack @ Dec 28th 2008 5:44PM
...and yet I'll still buy it because I didn't get the original. *bangs head against the wall*
Nap @ Dec 28th 2008 3:23PM
They should fix Brawl first
Dani Reader @ Dec 28th 2008 5:29PM
what, you pissed you can't exploit all those glitches anymore? Damn nintendo for balancing ther games!!! *Shakey Fist*
Shenorock @ Dec 28th 2008 7:44PM
You obviously don't know much about Brawl if you think it's balanced and isn't without tons of problems. It somehow has worse chaingrabs than melee. Step backwards in most ways unfortunately, footstooling however is sweet =P
Mr Khan @ Dec 28th 2008 3:30PM
To play the original with a GameCube controller might be worth the price of entry, but i have enough on my plate
rockintom @ Dec 28th 2008 3:31PM
I *really* hope they don't force you to use the c-stick/right analog to jump. That would be horrible.
Naota @ Dec 28th 2008 3:36PM
as a Ness user, I'd say SSB is the best, but Melee adds in a few more moves to round things out, and brawl adds in new features, so it's a matter of preference honestly. But to nerf Ness and co. not once, but twice...?
Mr Khan @ Dec 28th 2008 3:53PM
Both Kirby and Ness were severely nerfed in Melee (to the point where, while i was still best with Kirby, i simply couldn't compete in multiplayer matches, and Ness became unusable for me), both bounced back in Brawl, i think. Ness is still nowhere near my favorite character, but i can actually use him again, which is more than i could see for Ness Melee
Tez @ Dec 28th 2008 3:59PM
"Well, maybe we'd pay it, but we definitely wouldn't feel good about it. Fine -- we'd probably be ecstatic, but we'd totally pout for like, a minute or two. Take that, Nintendo!"
And thus, the problem with Nintendo fanboys.
BBB @ Dec 28th 2008 4:06PM
The fact that people are excited about paying 12 dollars for a significantly worse version of a game that's already readily available on the Wii for less money (Melee) pretty much sums up everything that's wrong with Nintendo fans and the Wii crowd in general.
And that's to say nothing of the existence of Brawl.
You all deserve the numerous cheerleading and vet games you get.
Mr Khan @ Dec 28th 2008 4:24PM
and the excellent light-gun games, action games, the recently resurrected genre of point-and-click adventures, as well as superior sports sims in most cases (Madden and its ilk seeming to be the exception)
There's a lot of medium-to-low budget fun to be had. It's only the grand cinematic experiences that are absent
bbb @ Dec 28th 2008 4:41PM
Yup. Unfortunately, most of those games sputter or bomb because people are too busy buying the same nintendo rehashes over and over and over. I'll bet any money this shoddy N64 port outsells just about every good third party Wii release.
Moptimus Slime @ Dec 28th 2008 4:55PM
sort of like how an Apple fanboy like yourself will constantly pay for slightly better rehashes of the same iPod?
Also, its not a port, its an emulation. Also, its not an import title so its only the usual 1000.
Try removing your head from your ass before commenting with the big boys. But while you wait for your next bowel movement, enjoy the endless possibilities of playing Myst on your iPhone!
samfish @ Dec 28th 2008 4:59PM
I'll take that bet. You obviously have no idea how much (or little, rather) downloadable games sell compared to retail games.
Hell, I'll bet you this doesn't outsell Zack & Wiki, which was at about 330,000 copies as of around a year or so ago.
