Yesterday, we spoke on the original Super Smash Bros, and lately, we've been eyeballing another fighter: Tatsunoko vs. Capcom ... and speaking of Capcom, we've even had a little chat about another fandom mashup fighting game. All this cross-game (and genre) rostering inspired today's question: who would be on the roster in your dream fighting game? Anything goes here, but let's stick to a list of ten fighters or fewer, just to keep things from getting really insane.

It should play like Powerstone. I don't think any more needs to be said.

It's not really a question of who would we want to have in a dream fighting game.
It's more a question of deciding a damage metric and whether or not they'll choose to balance the characters (which is what most fighting-game enthusiasts want) or be true to the characters' abilities. (which is what fanboys want)
I'm more inclined to the latter.
My ideal fighting game would have a super-power equivalent of "weight classes" and only characters within the same power-class can fight against eachother. Then make the characters controls and abilities as true to the original franchises as possible.
For example, in the Metroid franchise, almost universally enemies Samus Aran fights when defeated explode into bits of goo. (for kid-friendliness) This heavily implies that all of Samus' weaponry is some form of concussive blast generally capable of vaporizing unarmored foes. For this reason, it'd be a bad idea to pit Samus against someone who isn't armored or has some kind of built-in characteristic that might let them take a beating. (No, simply being "Solid Snake Badass" isn't good enough)

Then you'd end up with only as tiny playable roster at any given time. In Brawl, for example, only Bowser, King Dedede, and Donkey Kong will be eligible to fight each other.

Yeah? So what? Two obvious solutions to this would be to either put in as many characters as possible (this is after all an imaginary fighting game) in each power-class, or to force a handicap (visually represented by adding "generic cyber ninja armor" to the character model) appropriate to the power-class difference.

I just want a fighting game with Gene in it!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Hwm_24pyoc
I've got my fighting game with Viewtiful Joe in it, so I'm pleased.
Although Mike Haggar would be a nice addition to a fighting roster, too.
Hmm...I think if I had to pick 10, it would be
1) Gene (God Hand)
2) Viewtiful Joe
3) Link (Zelda)
4) Ryu Hasabuya (Ninja Gaiden)
5) Dante (DMC)
6) Haggar (Final Fight)
7) Zack & Wiki
8) Batman
9) Ryu (Street Fighter)
10) Felicia (Darkstalkers)

Lucasarts Vs. Capcom. Featuring Vega, Dhalsim, Hornet Man, Dr. Salvador, and Ghosts and Goblins Arthur, Vs. The likes of Manny Calavera (Uses Scythe, assist is glottis in the bone wagon), Bearded Guybrush (MI2 Style, wields a shovel, but has some voodoo-based ranged moves), Ben Throttle (Fists, fights similar to Ken), Indiana Jones (Same, but slightly faster, special finisher where he pulls a gun and shoots you), and Day Of The Tentacle's own Hoagie (Heavyweight, lots of wrestling moves like Zangief).
I Think it would work really well, if Capcom would consider it.

I think I could be happy with uh... M.U.G.E.N. available as some sort of Wii thing. I used to have such a great roster on that game, and yes, after hours of tuning, the damage was pretty balanced.
Don't get me wrong, I mean characters like Ascended Morrigan, Evil Flaming Ken, Chris Redfield, and uh.... well there was an Evil Ryu that was just plain murderous.... anyways, even with their damage gimped to minimum, their animation frames were usually very low, and they tended to be able to dominate a fight through sheer speed (something I had a lot more trouble even thinking about editing). The fan community was great for that.... despite anyone's complaint that the majority of them were always bitching that people were using their creations and not giving them credit, etc. All the same, it was fun playing as characters you only wished were in other games.
Jeeze, I gotta hunt down that old disk I have with it now.

I think Super Smash Bros type game, but with a roster expanded to have characters ranging from Alex Kidd to Master Chief.

A version of Smash Bros with Jump! characters in place of Nintendo characters. I know there's J!US but I prefer the way SSBB plays, one character, multiple lives.

Oh man, I second that!
Particularly Jak & Daxter, Rayman and Banjo. Those are some pretty iconic characters, and Rayman is basically Ubisoft's mascot.
A shame Jak would never meet Mario in a game like Smash: he's a Sony property. No chance there. Such a great series, too.
Off the top of my head, I think I'd throw in . . .
- Vivi (or just a generic Black Mage) from Final Fantasy
- Jade from Beyond Good & Evil
- Vyse from Skies of Arcadia (LOVE that game!)
- Millennia from Gradia II
- Faith from Mirror's Edge (wouldn't it be cool to see how they handle a freerunner?)
- ANY main character from Chrono Trigger. I just can't disqualify any of them, although Frog IS my favourite.
- Guybrush Threepwood (You fight like a cow!) from The Secret of Monkey Island
- Phoenix Wright from . . . Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (Just for kicks. Maybe as an assist trophy with Edgeworth!)

Well, there'd be several great games... One would be one featuring video game icons:
-PAC-MAN
-Master Chief
-The more iconic cast members of Brawl
-Space Invaders
-Those PONG paddles
-Whoever else you guys think are really iconic
Also, I second the Homestarrunner idea, and I wouldn't mind a Jhonen Vasquez fighting game, with the characters from Invader Zim, Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, Jellyfist, and a bunch of new characters from Mr. Scolex, 'cuz if there's anything we need now, it's something new to shut up those stupid HOT-TOPIC emo kids who won't stop complaining about the lack of Invader Zim.

2. Rorschach (for the coolness, would probably be torn apart by the rest of the roster)
3. Iron Man
4. Billy Butcher (from The Boys)
5. Hellboy
- End of comic section -
- Start of freaky section - :D
6. Earthworm Jim
7. Freakazoid
- Start of videogame section - (Jim fits in both I know)
8. Zero (from the Megaman X and Zero Series)
9. Ryu Hayabusa (Ninja Gaiden)
- Don't know where to put really -
10. Dio Brando (most of you will know that one)
Should be a sprite fighter with a tag system much like "Rage of the Dragons".
Damn, now I want that game... Thanks alot. :|

Hell yes! Best tag-fighter system ever! Also, awesome character designs. I really hope, should they ever revive it, that the next Double Dragon game gets to use some of Evoga's designs.

I think that Super Smash Bros Brawl should offer downloadable character packs, that you paid Wii points for, and they would have 1-3 characters in each, all from the same game(s). Back on topic however... I think a fighting game with every character from the entire Fire Emblem series would be epic. I have always wanted to have the fights be controlled, because I think that would make the game very cool, and by extension a fighting game with all of these characters would be, in my opinion, amazing.

That would be a really random, but really awesome lineup for a 2-d fighter with 3-d graphics. I'd love to see mudman rendered in 3-d, and he'd have to have his original sfx, not the stupid voice from neo geo battle colliseum.

I really really hope that Ken and Ryu from Street Fighter make it into a Smash Bros game in the future. I think they're something of a no brainer.
Darth Vader would be pretty cool too, and maybe Starkiller (from TFU) or Asajj Ventress (from Clone Wars) in there for good measure.
Some sort of Ridley (Metroid) would be cool, but probably difficult to do.
You have Sonic, you need Tails dammit! (Tails happens to be my favorite)
Miis, with custom fighting styles, pulling all of your favorite attacks from all of the different characters in the roster (with some sort of system to keep it balanced).
And, of course, they really really really need Mega Man, complete with taking the special attack of whoever he knocks off of the stage or something.

Travis Touchdown had better the hell be in the next Smash Bros. He's already a great fighter, and has some 2D experience (the bus level); not to mention weird fighting (like Brawl's upside moments, he's totally used to that). Hell, he's practically made for Brawl. Not to mention, who can resist http://www.mywii.com.au/img/gallery/full/H7BYLT8W.jpg ?
Using SmashWiki's template, ground attacks would just be various sword swinging. Preferably with a mix of high/low stance attacks. His Smash Attacks are again already built in (charge attacks). Aerial attacks are also just sword attacks, with down-B being the jumping down attack (which could basically be Link's down B, with an added seeking element). Grabs/throws... do I really need to go into this? Travis is already experienced in wrestling. Special moves could be taken from other abilities -- down special; guard (different from Smash Bros. regular guard. I believe Marth already has something like this. Travis' version would of course give him the ability to circle behind the enemy if you rock the joystick). Side special; Finishing Slice (use the movement controls for the directional input). Up special; I dunno, but I'm sure something could be found, maybe calling the Schepeltiger? Switching between katanas (in this sense, he could grow through the story like Pokemon trainer does in Brawl)? Maybe just throwing the katana upwards. Taunts would be easy enough (he's Travis-Mathafrakin'-Touchdown!), and Final Smash would be slots; which would always land on one of the Dark Side Modes.
Honestly, the more I think about it, the more I think Suda might've intentionally put Travis Touchdown in a good place to be in Smash when they decided to put him on the Wii. He would fit in very well. The biggest obstacles to his inclusion, being Mature and being third party, were already overcome by Solid Snake; who last I checked only had ONE nintendo game on gamecube, whereas Travis will have at least two on Wii. Not to mention, we worked fucking SONIC AND ROB into a FIGHTING game. I think it'd be simple enough to include Travis.
My only real reservation would be which level and which songs to include (remember, Sonic and Snake brought in four or five songs each). Obviously the theme song (along with the clips used for Dark Side mode), but there are a lot of good songs to choose from boss fights too. Steel Python is an obvious choice, given it has a huge amount of energy that makes it appropriate for Smash, I believe it was used in trailers, and it's the second boss fight theme (early in the game, so plenty of people will have heard it). Oxygen Graffiti would probably be a good one; it might not be made as a fight theme, but it would work, and also represents Santa Destroy pretty well. Stop Hanging DJs would be a good choice for Smash too, I suppose. Mach 13 Elephant Explosion would fit nicely as well.
The level is more of a conundrum. Santa Destroy works VERY well as a whole, but individually, the areas are kinda weak; not to mention a bit small for Smashin'. I always thought that the Fire Emblem stage swapping between various places was cheap and annoying. Maybe something like the Mario stage, where it's one long line, and connects to itself at the end? Start at the Motel No More Heroes, work your way down the street, by the video store, around Naomi's, back around the block you go by the ATM, K-ENT, go through the golden alley (? think I forgot the name), walk back around the front of the Thunder Ryu Bldg., down around past Area 51 and the gas station, down to the beach, back up again, past the baseball stadium, through the subway, get off the subway and go through the stage, get on a bus and go to Speed City (hide behind parts of the level to keep from getting hit with Speed Buster!), walk out of the city on to the highway with the windmills, through the long hallway, and back up the street by the school, by the stadium (The baseball stadium again?!) to the Motel... *pant* ok, nevermind, that would take a bit too long. But you see the problem. Even if there were a good location, they're way too small for brawl. The best I can think of would either be the somewhat boring Motel, or the less boring but very unrepresentative stage. Then again, Metal Gear Solid had the same problem, and they managed to get a pretty good stage going; or maybe they'll have something better in Desperate struggle.
...shit. Now I want to play NMH *again*. I have other games to work through, dammit!
uh. back on topic, if I were making a crossover fighter, I'd probably go for Grasshopper Vs. Platinum.
On the Platinum side:
1- Amaterasu (Okami)
2- Waka (Okami)
3- Joe (Viewtiful Joe)
4- Jack (MadWorld)
5- Main Character (Bayonetta)
The Grasshopper side:
1- Killer7 (Killer7) [To keep this from getting too out of control, and to keep the spirit of the game, they would be constantly tag teaming for each move, not acting like separate characters as Pokemon Trainer does in Brawl]
2- Travis Douchetown (No More Heroes)
3- Destroyman (No More Heroes)
4- Jeane (No More Heroes)
5- Holly Summers (No More Heroes)
A little heavy on the NMH side, but that's rounded out by having the entire Killer7 team as one character.

Capcom Fighters:
-Mega Man (with NES graphics!)
-Ryu
-Viewtiful Joe
-Amaterasu (please?)
-Zach and Wiki
Square Enix Fighters:
-Cloud
-Sephiroph
-Neku (PLEEEEEEEEASE?)
-Sora
-Chrono
-The UFO (From "Space Invaders Get Even" - it could play sort of like Captain Olimar in Smash Bros.)

Mortal Kombat Vs. Killer Instinct
impressive combos, fast-paced, gory, and over the top. with a heavily stereotypical 90s dance soundtrack
enders and fatalities for all characters.
