If a console's feelings can be hurt, you might want to look in the corner for a rocking, sobbing PS3. Not even a month after being dubbed a "sinking ship" by Silicon Alley Insider, the Wall Street Journal has published an ouch-inducing article titled "Hope Fades for PS3 as a Comeback Player."
In the wake of NPD numbers for November showing the console solidly in third place and Black Friday sales of Xbox 360 pegged at 3-to-1 over PS3, the WSJ points out that holiday sales of PS3 are down 19% over the same period last year; Wii and Xbox 360, on the other hand, were up – 100% and 8%, respectively.
The Journal quotes Wedbush Morgan analyst, Michael Patcher, as predicting a price drop on PS3 hardware in April 2009, the beginning of Sony's new fiscal year. The paper says that if the sales gap can't be closed by such measures, "[Sony] could risk making the PS3 an afterthought to game publishers." Gloomy much?

@SurfMurph: Way to add nothing to the argument. You blew a perfectly good chance at a rebuttal with a 360 game list.
But maybe you, too, realize that the 360 has very little on the horizon.

Sony really needs to learn that cheap works, and stop being all fancy pants with the next generation. The box may be more powerful, with blu ray, etc, but that just drove the price way up. If they kept cutting prices like m$ did, they could have easily sold masses. Then gone out of business, after losing shedloads of cash.
If you were buying a console for your child, without much knowledge of this area, which would you buy? The cheaper xbox, or the highly expensive PS3 that does lots of shiny things that you don't really know about?

but if you were buying an HD gaming console as well as a Blu-Ray player, PS3 is cheaper. $300 for a 360 with a HDD + $250 for a Blu-Ray player = $150 more expensive than a PS3.
For gaming only, you're right, 360 wins, but the PS3's quality for what it offers is very reasonably priced.

Individual writers may have bias, but the site on the whole doesn't as the individuals tend to balance each other out. That tends to be the best method of blogging as one person with a specific bias will never post the ugly news but someone else will. We get to see everything this way. Stop looking at the trees, there's a forest out there.

Seriously you can't have it both ways. When the stories are how band another game system is doing joystiq is the "TRUTH" because you don't like that system. When it starts burning your interest they are the bias. The fact is I haven't found one site that doesn't lean one way or the other when they feel like it.
Also this deluge of Sony bad news isn't sites cooking the flame bait, these are people looking at the industry and calling it the way they see it. Give MS credit they have an incredible PR staff.

The article is a little overhyped, but definitely on the right track.
Sony's failure to make the PS3 a must-have has made it possible for developers to ignore it. And that's not good for the PS3 or Sony.
PS3 is my favorite console this generation, but it sure seems like it isn't doing terribly well. Which is bad for all of us, because if 360 succeeds despite awful reliability and ridiculous ripoff-priced accessories, we can expect more of the same from all the companies next generation. And that's not good.
On the other hand, it will also hopefully mean every console maker next generation realizes you should include a good headset, and one with a boom mike that doesn't pick up TV noises too badly (unlike virtually every Bluetooth headset, as used with PS3).

I was a big Xbox fanboy for a long time. Then a few months ago I found myself purchasing a PS3. Even though it was expensive I don't regret it. It's an amazing media hub, I can stream all sorts of crap my from laptop. I only have a few games for it though, only exclusives, but at least its got backcompat so I can play PS2 games, and since I never had a Sony console for me, there's a huge catalog to explore.
I will say that the PS3 is the superior machine, but the 360 is more fun to use and it feels more 'alive' when I'm online, being able to see my friends' avatars, watching Major Nelson, it's all much more inviting than the PS3s online experience.

I was just gonna say does more sales mean more income? I mean sure the xbox360 has a higher install base but does that necessarily mean they earned a lot considering the problems they have encountered? Im pretty sure Nintendo made a profit on the Wii and im also sure Sony is now making a profit on the PS3 since its much cheaper now to make. Im not going into a flame war in which console is better, it just seems weird that since Sony has just declared that the PS3 is now cheaper to develop that all these "Doom" issues started spreading out not only in this site but others as well with different people spreading the bad news. My intuition tells me that since the Ps3 is now cheaper to make a very likely price cut next year is inevitable which would make microsoft nervous since they cannot afford another price cut on their system. Anyways we'll soon find out in 2009.

Comeback? The PS3 has the best exclusives and the best hardware. Why can't Americans think for themselves? Everybody is jumping on the "PS3 is doomed, YAY XBOX!" bandwagon in this country and it's pathetic. Sorry to upset you fanboys but the PS3 is here to stay whether you like it or not.

Lets not forget that some of these people are just americans trying to defend their home console and wanting to see the invader console dead. I find these xbots quite admirable...plus we sonyfanboys arent really guiltless on all these flaming issues. My guess is japan does the same to xbox360 on their hometurf so who are we to judge them when almost everyone of us is spun by all these media mess.

I will say this. The fact that nintendo is doing so well with a low tech console scares me. I WANT cutting edge tech in my consoles. Nintendos console is nearly a step backwards technology wise. Barely any built in storage, crappy online capabilities, gimmicky (yes, I said it, who wants some?) controller, underpowered CPU/GPU, no high def. Yes, it sells really well because its "kid friendly," cheap, and appeals to the mom and pop crowd too. But for tech junkies like me, its a nightmare. The fact that next generation could potentially (hopefully unlikely) be Sony/MS/Nintendo showcasing small boxes with capablities barely beyond what we have now nearly makes me cry. I doubt it will happen, but still.
I applaud Nintendo for their innovation, but I glare at them for their slap in the face of technological progress.

They tried marketing the PSP as competition with the iPhone and iPods with the music and video playback, as well as the addition of Skype. Seriously, I got some thing in the mail once, had basically nothing to do with games. It was all, "Problem - you missed last night's episode of The Office. Solution - Download it to your PSP and watch it on the go!"
Gay. Killzone Liberation was a sweet game that proved the PSP has great potential.

The Wii will continue to lead because it appeals to everyone from the grandparents, to moms and dads having fun with their kids, all the way to the classic Nintendo fan boys and the rest of the hardcore gamers they have fooled. Nintendo is geared towards the younger crowd and family activities, enough said. I'm however a hardcore gamer and enjoy brutal action games, role playing games, and first & third person shooters. Nintendo isn't gonna supply any of that (or enough I should say) to me. They have slapped every hardcore gamer in the face. I own an Xbox 360 & PS3 and sadly I'm becoming depressed with both. Xbox 360 is mostly geared towards shooting games. It's where it's heart is and strong point. Yes, I know it has some rpgs over PS3 but, they are not that good and not that many. I'm on my 7th Xbox 360 and if the warranties ever stop coming then that system is done. Microsoft can go fish in a well if they think I'm paying for another one. Great games but, horrible hardware beyond repair. If the next Xbox doesn't play my 360 games and my original xbox games then that collection is SCREWED! Both PS3 and 360 have already proven they have given up and don't care about backwards compatibility. I'm not gonna keep buying 360's after the warranty runs out to maintain a collection. The PS3 is a good system overall and I like it but, Sony's lack of commitment and dedication are killing it. Someone on the higher up chain is sitting on their ass smoking cigars and not caring with that system. I'm finding less and less quality games over shovelware being released nowadays and it sucks =( Before any of you dog me for this Yes, I own a N64 & Gamecube, I don't despise the Wii, it just doesn't suit me as a hardcore gamer. The 360 has a better library than the original but the hardware makes it hard to want to collect anything for it long term. PS3 compared to the PS2 library is an eye sore and needs improvement. I find rpg's in general compared to last generation are becoming not as frequent =( I know many like Wii's motion but, if all systems went that way I would quit gaming. Being a hardcore gamer I just want my controller and a mic. I don't wanna wave controllers around to have to do everything. In Summary, I'm just finding this current generation of gaming slowly ripping the competitors off in ideas instead of creating their own and quality titles becoming harder to find. I find myself looking at all my older systems last generation and even before that and saying, "Those were the days when games were good and developers/producers actually gave a shit!", or am I the only one thinking this? Do you guys agree or disagree?

"It would not surprise me at all if we didn't see new consoles until at least 2013 or 2014. Nintendo will be the outlier; Basically it's up to them to decide when the next generation will be (to steel some hyperbole from Sony)."
- I'm with you on that one, there is no rush to create another console with the Economy in the toilet.
