FanPoll'08: Shooter of the Year / Sports Game of the Year / Strategy Game of the Year
Nearly half of all votes went to
Gears of War 2 making it our reader choice for Shooter of the Year. A top contender for Game of the Year,
Gears of War 2 grabbed the top spot in polling and never looked back against stiff competition from
Left 4 Dead and
Call of Duty: World at War. General consensus, this was a hard one to pick.
Sequel to the critically and commercially successful 2006 Xbox 360-exclusive,
Gears of War 2 continues the story of Marcus Fenix and his ragtag team of COG Soldiers against the invading Locust Horde.
From the comments:
"Yeah this one is really hard, I friggin loved all these games." -- dirt junkie
Ironically, this one came down to the wire. For the first day
NHL 09 was top dog, then
FIFA 09 and finally on the final day of voting
Madden NFL 09 fans came out in droves. Nabbing 30% of the vote,
Madden NFL 09 took our community top spot for Sports Game of the Year.
Madden NFL 09 marks the 20th anniversary of the
Madden series from EA Sports. Adding new modes to appeal to a more mass market crowd, Madden 09 does away with the stigma of being the "only" option to being the "best" option.
From the comments:
"Actually, all of the EA Sports games were very good this year. EA really stepped it up for 09." -- breaklaw
Grabbing nearly half of the votes is the console-specific turn-based strategy title,
Civilization Revolution. Some comments wrote in
Tom Clancy's EndWar but with the amount of votes
CivRev nabbed we're confident it still would have come out on top.
Civilization Revolution brings the world made famous on the PC to the console in a completely unique strategy experience from the team at Firaxis. Conquer the world, one resource at a time.
