FanPoll'08: Xbox 360 Game of the Year

Through a tough competition and over 11,000 votes later, the Xbox 360 Fanboy community has named Gears of War 2 the Reader's Choice Game of the Year.

Throughout most of the voting Gears 2 and Fallout 3 battled it out, switching spots between first and second place. In the end 22% of voters felts Gears of War 2 was the overall winner over Bethesda Softworks' Fallout 3. Third place went to Rockstar North's epic action/adventure Grand Theft Auto IV while Valve's Left 4 Dead firmly took fourth over Fable II.

When it was all said and done, over 100,000 votes were tallied to decide our reader's choice picks for the best and worst of 2008. We here at X3F would like to thank you and cannot wait to see what 2009 has to offer!

much tighter than i thought... i honestly didn't see fallout gettign 2nd. Congrats to GEARS!

wow, gears 2? really....i guess being the most dissappointing game/game of the year is an honor..? That game is horrible, online is basicly unplayable...did these people play the same game that i played?

you should get a better internet connection if its unplayable. the only thing about multiplayer that sucks to me is how easy it is to chainsaw now. gears deserved it.

Most disappointing and BEST GAME!?

Sorry but Gears of War 2 was Gears of War 1.5. It was basically an expansion pack. And with broken multiplayer it barely deserves to be called Gears of War 1.5.
No doubt it was a was one of the best expansion packs ever (when looked at it like that) but when looked as a sequel; it just isn't good enough to be the best of '08.

Grand Theft Auto IV should have raped Gears 2.

I'm surprised too, however what I figured happen was. All the Fallouts voters voted for Fallout and then went back to playing it, while the Gears voters, Voted for Gear and then went to play it but had to wait/got frustrated and started voting for gears some more to kill time.

I picked Gears but that doesn't let Epic off the hook, they still need to fix the all the issues with it.

They would be at #1 on the Top 10 list if they would hurry up with a patch before everyone trades it in.

Gears is a great game without all the online problems. With a good connection and players who don't glitch, its a ton of fun. When you get on bad connections, quitting players, or glitchers it ruins the game experience.

Gears 2 easily, it was made by gamers for gamers cliffs numerous interviews showed this, very well deserved! Fallout is class but not as accessibly to everyone like Gears 2. OK the online is outrageous,(which is why games have betas) but you cant keep the main game down!

WOW i think falllout should of won this. walking out of vault 101 and seeing the wasteland for the first time is 10x better than any scene from gears. Gears also pulled a heroes ***spoilers****

by introducing new characters just to kill them off later

I agree that fallout 3 should have won, I have both gears and fallout and gears was lack luster in my opinion, I still had fun and just as it started to feel repetitive they always threw in something interesting,

but fallout is a better game, I've been playing for a week and havent even attempted the second mission of the main quest, and there are creatures I havent even seen yet, so I've heard, such as the "DeathClaw" ?

JCP imagine if Larry bird became a feral werewolf. they are really starting to annoy me as they keep killing off dogmeat.

yeah, i dont even take dogmeat with me anymore cause i dont want him to die. its pretty sad of the individual when he develops an attachment to a video game dog. like i have. (i think that qualifies me as a nerd.) But yeah deathclaws are mean.

i think i came across one that was under control by the enclave. they are major beaches.

I'm pretty sure Dustin rigged the outcome.

I'm not having ANY problem connecting in Gears of War 2

Me and my friends are however having problems having fun in it.
There's just too much random stuff, and the smoke concussion thing just plain SUCKS. (remove that please, or make it so it stuns you like a nearby explosion. Not throws you to the ground for 10 seconds)

GOTY: Fallout 3
36 hours in and still haven't beaten it, or even found 100 locations yet *beaten meaning main story*

Nice to see someone actually spent time playing the game, sure the first hour in it is fine and all. Once you start to put in time it gets so annoying (cheap chainsws, Lag, quitters, glitchers, smokes), but fun to play at times.

At least it wasn't GTA IV. I am glad that there are other people who realized the story doesn't quite live up to what the image of it is. I enjoyed it, but the last half.. ugh.

Other than that, the only thing on this list that I really disagree with is Criterion not getting best studio, since that award is not about the studio that makes the best game (since that would be implied with the "best game" award), but the studio that truly backed up their product, supported their product, and listened to the concerns of their customers (if not limited to the Xbox though then I could see Valve getting it for their support of the PC version of L4D, but I would vote for CCP hands-down for EVE Online).

The amount of flack Gears is receiving here amazes me, it's as if matchmaking is all people play making the entire game a disappointment. I've had no problems at all with the game and the only thing I haven't bothered doing is matchmaking.

Eitherway, I voted for Rock Band 2, though I really think Tales of Vesperia was the worthy title.
I like Guitar Hero's place.

No love for Fable 2 I see, that's too bad. I really liked that game.

i know, banjo kazooie is such a good game, and everyone talking down about gears 2, i truth be told, find no problem without, yes, it is glitchy, yes, matchmaking is kind of slow, but every game has it fair share of glitches, like halo 3's random killer cones, or random melee battle outcomes, i dont really play CoD 4 enough to find glichtes, but truth be told gears 2 deserved game of the year, good story mode, good online (if no lag or glitches occur) but Gears 2 is great, gta 4 was so good too, but it bored me after the bank robbing mission, and tai was a neccesary death in gears 2, but carmine was a stupid death, then dizzy, WtF!!!!

Gears of War 2 doesn't deserve any award other than biggest disappointment.
I have no problem with Gears in general, but Gears two is, as some one else here put it, a glorified expansion, which is fails at. There really isn't that much of a difference, it is just Gears with tweaks, and a continuation of the story that isn't very compelling.
Look at the great games that got destroyed in the votes! Left 4 Dead (Not as extensive a game, but still more fulfilling), Fallout 3, Call of Duty: World@War, Dead Space.
All better games, and they didn't have online issues that crippled multiplayer, and they were all either original, or the gameplay actually progressed, or changed.
