We were in support of Robert Peloni, the sole developer of homebrew RPG Bob's Game, when he began a 100-day lock-in to convince Nintendo to sell him the SDK he needed to release his game on DS. At least, we were on day 12 of said protest. We're 21 days in now, and things are getting ... well, they're getting a little odd.
What kind of odd? Well, Peloni has started releasing the addresses of Nintendo execs and offering semi-creepy holiday greetings to Reggie. Oh, also, he's begun threatening to ... well, as he said:
"If I cannot legitimately publish my game, the only option left to fulfill this goal is to bundle a KILLER APP with a DSi enabled 'homebrew device.' ... 'bob's game' is being translated into many languages, including Japanese, and will be released worldwide. Unfortunately, this has the potential to significantly cut into Nintendo's bottom line."
We still hope Bob can work something out, we just ... well, we can see why Nintendo might be a little hesitant about working with him.

He met all the requirements that needed to be filled by Nintendo to get an SDK,so send him the fucking thing.
Nintendo is really starting to piss me off with their smug,80's Nintendo attitude on this situation.

Oh well now, since he fits all the requirements, he just MUST get a SDK.
Last time I checked, Nintendo has the right to deny you a SDK even if you "fit all the requirements".

Which is the point of the story,Nintendo setting requirements and then being cocks for the only reason of being a cock.
You would think an industry innovator and leader would want people to dream and try new ideas,to see their hard work and aspirations paid off and became a full fledged title in the gaming world. By the past 3 generations it's obvious that isnt Nintendo anymore and they don't give a shit about anyone but themselves and 3rd parties be damned. Microsoft used to have their software and hardware locked down like pitbulls and now they have the XNA club. Even Sony is the place for indie developers with stuff like Flower and Fat Princess.
Maybe if he added more waggle and named it "Party Gamez Wii" Nintendo would grab it.

some other things I enjoyed
"News of my protest has now reached several major Japanese gaming sites.
This means that Nintendo of Japan is becoming aware of what its Western branch has done-
and they are beginning to receive a great deal of negative PR on their home front.
In other words- because of what may be the decision of a single NOA executive for a personal reason-
Nintendo of Japan may now be at risk of some very serious consequences."
right. I'm sure NOJ will fully support NOA decision to deny you a SDK, you wacko.
"The interview was about how he was making it possible for small developers
to create games for the first time on a Nintendo platform with the WiiWare program.
The existence of my game directly contradicted his speech!"
uh, no. He was talking about WIIWARE, not some shitty fan-game you're trying to make for the DS.

I just wish this guy had found a different way to say Fuck You to Nintendo. Nintendo is a little bitch of a company. Since day 1. I'm not being any sort of fanboy, don't even pull that crap. SNES is my favorite all time system. But Nintendo treats the developers who support their systems like dog crap.
Here is an interesting read on Nintendo's grip "since day 1," just to back up my most likely unpopular statements:
http://www.crockford.com/wrrrld/maniac.html
They may have the right to this or that, but the bottom line is that they lock their systems down more than Apple locks their products down. If they weren't "just being dicks," they would have allowed the guy to buy one before this stupid stunt started. Now I'm sure they won't, because they don't want to support irrational behavior, or make people think that they will succumb to an averaje joe's will.
I don't know how he should have gone about it, but this isn't the right way. The only reason I still support his craziness is because I've grown to hate Nintendo more and more since they were my favorite company as a child.
Actually, come to think of it, I was a fanboy until I bought a PS1. I remember owning an N64, as well as ONLY Nintendo products, until the PS1.. and I actually felt bad for buying it at first. Whatever, I was a kid. I was a Vesper XD

If it was that difficult to get a game published on the DS, there wouldn't be 20 cheap pet sims, games based on pathetic licensed properties like John Deere brand tractors, or many of the other 600+ games that have been released for the DS. Many other no-name developers have successfully released games on the DS, and this guy probably could have too if he had the business sense to back up his game and followed the proper process from the start.

I agree with jerk face - maybe should have gone the PC route first, you know before spending all those hours working on a specific platform when you have nothing to say it'll bear fruit.
Maybe he's just thinking that since he spent the time doing the work, they HAVE to give him a kit?
Maybe I should make some sort crazy move like this with something in life - do it - then demand I get props and paid.

Yeah, but he's only demanding the CHANCE to get props and get paid. He's not asking Nintendo to PUBLISH it, or even to give him anything for free: he just wants to BUY something from them that will enable him to finish his game, at which point PUBLISHERS would evaluate the quality and marketability of his game and decide whether or not to publish it.
I think he deserves to be able to at lease finish his game.

He isn't releasing anybody's personal information, that address is the address for Nintendo's headquarters. Everybody knows that.
And the Reggie thing is a little joke he has on his site about Reggie not liking his game. Like he's calling him out.
I honestly don't see why everybody thinks this guy is so crazy. He just spent 5 years making his dream game on his favorite company's system. Now he's just simply asking for the Nitro SDK so he can have his publisher... well publish it. Nobody ever said that you couldn't release a homebrew game as a complete commercial product. Hell, Microsoft is doing this OFFICIALLY with the XNA community game service on the Xbox.
I mean, I can kinda see why Nintendo wouldn't wanna give him one because they probably get applications for the SDK everyday from random kids who just wanna play around with it. Yet in his case he has proven that he has a full complete product to use it for. He has even said in one of his podcast interviews that he has put together a team to use with his next game when this is all over. So it wouldn't be going to waste.
So I don't see any reason why Nintendo just can't give the poor guy the one and only thing he has asked from them in all 5 years of development. He has been talking to them since Feburary of 2007. And now even after almost 2 full years, the guy still hasn't gotten anywhere!
While I do agree that locking himself in a room is a little extreme, I blame Nintendo for letting it get to this point in the first place. They should have just gave it to him way back when he proved he deserved one, and we could have been playing this already on the system it was designed for, the DS.

Personally if i was anyone from Nintendo i would Never work with anyone writing in the Quasi threat.
There are many developers here (even in madison .. don't wanna name names but you know who you are and i'm glad that your work has come so far as i've seen you develop)
But honestly, fuck em... this is equvilent to working at a record label and having some band demand i be signed onto their label for distribution and press or else im going to play the same 12 songs outside their office for a month straight.
I respect the fact that he will try so hard for his case with the lock in... but honestly a better use of his time would be
1 getting in contact with someone else to publish him
2 if not that work on some other professional or personal goals (therepy)
3 Contribute something else worth incentive to soiety
\
In the long run how would this look for Nintendo if they DID give him what he wanted?
it would probably encorage more of the same and for what? giving some nerd his 15 minutes and maybe enough money to pay a lttle more mortgage?
But i guess stanger things have happened...
I'm actually quite crious to see where this goes from a cultural pychological perspective to the lone designer perspective.
Heres hoping for a decent into madness with an epiphany at the end...

If Bob can legitimately threaten to release his game, open-source, bypassing any potential producer profits, then go for it. However, saying he will damage Nintendo's bottom line is an auto-cratic death sentence = does he know how many ninja's Nintendo keeps on retainer? Cuz I sure don't. And for him, there will only need to be ONE.
If your game is worth it, man, it'll get out there. People will see it, and love it, and you might not get vast piles of money for it - was that your intention for making this game?

If you were a musician and you had worked 5 years to make some song, then some store didn't sell you the recording equipment to record it so you can send the finished demo to the record company to get it printed, you would be pretty pissed too, why the hell do you have to "Apply" for a console SDK anyway, you don't have to "Apply" to buy Pro Tools or Ableton or any PC programming software.

We ALL knew this person has gotten cabin fever when he stated to have a one hundred day "tensai"(what the hell does that mean) sit down.
I mean, he spent 5 days, 20 hours in his room, makin a game and I think all time spendin alone has made him craaazzzy. Being devoided of any social life (whether it is online or offline,) so that he can work on his game may have given him rose coloured glasses in thinkin how great his title is.
I assume he hasn't play any titles in the last 5 years to know that JRPGs are no longer popular. Not bashin the genre, there has been a lack of RPGS made or released in the US and the ones that are out, do not sell well despite being good. I mean Cry on was cancelled because RPGs are not what moving as oppose to non rpg american made titles like GTA4 and Halo 3.
Moreoever, other than the old Square games, there hasn't been a lot of RPGS that sold very well in the US of A. Sure, there are popular RPGS like "Phantasy star" and "Earthbound" but that is rare when there are a lot more of shovelware RPG games like "King Arthur and the Knights of Justice" or that one japanese style american made rpg with the blue haired gal (the one that tried to copy FF7)that came out for the pc many moons ago.
Seein that the game resolves around highschool, it seems that Bob's game is aimed for highschool teen, which might be a bad idea since most kids nowadays are more into xbox 360 shooters than rpgs.
Regardless of content, he seems like he full of s**t by commentin on his game, prasin' it as if it was the next big discorvery since fire. I mean he said his game is a masterpiece and that it is better than any homebrew stuff out there, which I find hard to believe. I doubt this game is beter than the upcomming King's quest 9 fanmade game that is in 3d, whom the fangame group professional got permission from Vivendi to make.
Bob claims that his game isn't homebrew and that it is a retail game, yet the game is made on one pc, by one guy, in his room. If that doesn't like a homebrew game, then I don't know what is homebrew.
The problem with a one man team is that he may not catch all the bugs he put in his game regardless of how long he spent makin game. I am sure he will not ppl to test bug his games in havin some crazy belief one of those ppl will steal his ideas.
I bet when this title is released, a lot of ppl will be disappointed for not livin up the hype Bob puts out about his rpg.

Because, as we all know, Sega does what Nintendon't.
...
Yes, I apologize.
Anyway, I believe Bob would have been better off if he'd kept on attempting to meet with Nintendo execs, at least American ones, instead of shutting himself off from human contact of any kind. You can really draw too many similarities to so many of the awful gamer/coder stereotypes that way.
And besides, adults throwing hissy fits is never funny. I mean, c'mon, if I had a nickel for every set of five years in a row I've wasted...

Pelloni is acting like a complete unprofessional. The naivete was somewhat endearing at first, but it is getting creepy. I want to see his game released, but this is totally not the way to go about it. Locking yourself in a room for 100 days? Releasing the addresses of Nintendo execs? What's next? Stalking these individuals when you emerge from your protest? I'm more concerned for the man than the game at this point, honestly.
All of the criticism towards Nintendo is mostly unjustified. The company set a standard back in the day with its licensing system. Its their system, they can put what they want on it. Like it or not.

This kid is a psychotic...its become apparent to me that, for whatever reason, Nintendo has good reason to sever all communication with him quickly.
NO company will come ten feet of putting this kid's product anywhere near the hands of retail or distribution outlets - nobody. He's unstable, uncertain, and most definitely a bit on the scary/crazy side. Not to mention completely unprofessional and a bit scary.
I've checked out his website... he needs to seek professional help now, before he becomes dangerous, or does something so illegal that he'll live to regret it. He's dealing/threatening a major super publisher with his immature and ranting antics, and it would be a shame to see Nintendo resort to pursuing legal action against him to protect their privacy. He's setting back independent publishing relationships, not to mention making it more difficult for legit developers and artists to pursue their dreams.
Bob - stop it. Grow the hell up, get out of your box, realize defeat, move on, and learn what it takes to be a damn professional and stop acting like a child. Release your game on the PC, or move it over to the iPod/iPhone, where the SDK is relatively cheap (or free) and sell your game there. You've lost Nintendo with your ridiculous posturing, and you'd better quit before they (rightfully so) unleash their wrath.

Campbell: You have to infiltrate the "production office" and steal the data of the game without the terrorists finding out.
Snake: Anything else?
