Written by two designers of the Cell processor, The Race for a New Game Machine, is a new book covering the creation of Sony's ambitious PlayStation 3 chip, and how Microsoft got a hold of its architecture for the Xbox 360. The Wall Street Journal, which gave a rather gloomy forecast for the PS3 earlier this week, has an extensive preview.
According to the book, Sony, Toshiba and IBM started working on the Cell in 2001 and planned to spend $400 million over five years. If everything went according to plan, the PlayStation 3 would be out by Christmas 2005. In 2002, Microsoft approached IBM about making a chip for what would later be known as the Xbox 360. IBM ended up making a new chip "built around the core" of the Cell it was currently creating for Sony. In the end, Xbox made the 2005 launch (with a time bomb under the hood) and Sony came out a year later.
As the WSJ points out, for all the power and money behind Microsoft and Sony's consoles, Nintendo has outsold both using a "sound strategic vision" with the less-powerful Wii.

Actually I meant World of Goo (I'm basing the bombing thing on GameSpot's "best game no one played award" cus I don't have any financial data) and Zack&Wiki, but I've heard good things about Boom Blox and De Blob. Which were also a financial failure afaik.
And please, the difference between PS2 and Xbox 1 is way, way smaller than the gap between Xbox 360/PS3 and the Wii.
Left4Dead... Valve games always did better on PC. Dead Space is really good, and although it supposedly didn't do very well, I bet it sold more than Boom Blox, de Blob and Zack&Wiki.

• Boom Blox should be over 500,000 copies by now (I'm assuming, since it was at 400,000 in May).
• Zack & Wiki wasn't a flop. Last we heard it had sold 330,000 copies, per Capcom's financial report. In that same report, Capcom noted that it had "exceeded sales expectations."
• Who knows what's up with de Blob? It's too soon to know anything about it's numbers.
And I don't know where the fuck Gamespot gets off saying World of Goo is a game nobody played. The thing has been at or near the top of the WiiWare best sellers chart since it came out.
Downloadable games don't sell anywhere nearly as much as retail games...hence why it's considered a smashing success when Megaman 9 or SSFIITHDR sell over 200,000 copies.

yea, i wish there could be replies to replies like in youtube.
Everyone in the world got to play World of Goo for free on PC. It might have sold better if it was a wii exclusive or if it at least had simple drm.

"Built around the core" is extremely misleading.
Both the Xenon and Cell are built around the POWER core. And it was created over a decade before both of them.
There was no cribbing between game companies involved.

I think Gekko/Broadway are parallel within the core, but not multi-core...no one really knows much about Broadway because Nintendo hasn't decided it would be worth their while to talk about it (and whose grandma is going to understand that anyway?)
The SPEs are a totally different animal though. I guess if you wanted to think about Xenon and Broadway being PPC on steroids, you could, but this really has more to do with the flexibility of IBM's core architecture, IMHO. It's solid, and they're willing to license that technology out and customize it for their customers, so they get the business.

Whats the point of all this? I mean seriously they are still different processors no matter which way you look at them. Its not like nintendo gave birth the playstation....oh wait a minute..it did!!!

Oh get off M$ hairy beanbag!! You act like they're the only company that dishes out dirt and doesn't play fair! Y'all sound like big babies. What about sony who pushed blu-ray and slapped the "popular" playstation logo over a blu-ray player that just so happens to play games?? What about early commercials that showcased movies instead of games?? Get over it... sony shoved blu-ray down y'all friggin' throats... Y'all so brainwashed over sony and the ps brand, it makes me sick!

Im kinda grateful for Sony pushing bluray down my throat and never did i once suffocate while trying to swallow it. Actually its the better medium since its scratch proof and has better capacity than dvd could ever try to approach. Plus since the capacity is so large it is really harder to pirate or even download hence the support it now gets from major companies. You obviously do not own a PS3 and most likely do not have an HDtv to even appreciate the benefits that bluray has to offer. I will never say the PS3 is the best console because that is quite subjective since preference overrides any amount of logic but i will say that i love the ps3 because it works for me. Its just logical to move on to a medium with the highest capacity to ensure future proofing of a product.

the thing is here, fud or not... the Wii isnt compeating against the ps3 or 360. it is in its own market, aimed souly at "people who dont really play games" which is proven in its piss poor software sales (where the only 5 things sold for it are mario kart, mario galaxy, wii sport, wii play and wii fit, and not everyone has all of those, 1 or 2 at the most).
the 360 and the ps3 are who are in competition with each other, as they both aim at the hardcore gamer and both use their own techniques to sell their console. microsoft use the playability factor (when the console isnt flashing more lights than blackpool iluminations) and sony use the "it says sony, and playstation on it" factor (so, people who bought a psx and ps2 who havnt gone to microsoft, and have more pound notes than cells in their body). both have good games (both have the same games really) and each has their own exclusives that the head of the respective departments at each company would rather have their nadgers eaten by parrana than allow a port to another console.
so with all that considered, it doesnt matter who has the better hardware, whatever console you bought, you will see as the best, since its human nature now to justify to your self why you just spent all that money on something you dont really NEED.

Funny as hell watching the masses argue about CPU specs like they are all pros.
Hey, guess what, the Ford Model T has 4 wheels, an engine, an exhaust system, and windows. Gee, I guess a 2009 Dodge Viper is based off of it huh.
99.99% of all new technology coming out is based in some way on previous technology. The way that the Cell and the Xenon handle memory, algorithms, and calculations is vastly different. The wiki articles for both are a good read, and I think Cnet has a few articles on it too. techreport.com has a few as well if I recall correctly.

Some of the facts are that
*The PS3 has sold better than the 360 in the same time in theor lifespans.
* MS and Sony have lost and will continue to lose money on hardware
* The Wii is the king of this generation
* MS having sold more consoles than the PS3 (see * 1) does not mean it has performed better
* None of this matters anyway because people choose to pull things out fo their ass rather than listening to actual facts and even with evidence in their face they will still be in denial
* NINTENDO IS THE WINNER. THE WII IS A VIDEOGAME CONSOLE. IF YOU CHOOSE TO CONVINCE YOURSELF OF MS SELECTIVE STATISTICS THAT IT IS NOT COMPETING WITH NINTENDO YOU ARE AN IDIOT SHEEP.

This is just dumb. PowerPC has been IBM's baby for years. So they used it as the basis for the Cell. MS using PowerPC it as the CPU for the X360 has almost zero to do with the PS3 CPU, more to do with cost, performance and power consumption.
The XBox 360's 3 PowerPC cores are fairly generic beasts (which is what makes them easy to program for), while Sony's Cells have the SPEs which make them the floating point monsters they are. This is as dumb as claiming both consoles are Macintoshes since those used to use PowerPC.

@Bigfat
Of course i was comparing the improvements over dvd since the winner of the format wars was the bluray hence the successor to dvd. As far i know about HD-DVD the maximum capacity it has is about 50gigs where bluray has gone more than 200gigs. Plus its not that expensive anymore since the adoption rate is quite high and pretty soon it would just be as affordable as a regular movie dvd. The only expensive blurays are for gaming and eveyone knows whatever format you have as long as it is a new game it will be expensive.

WOW. I love how people think the PS3 is the only thing that uses the cell. Today's supercomputers don't use them at all.

I still don't understand why they even bother to still compare the Wii the the 360/PS3....not only are the demographics different for the machines but also the application of the consoles.
Yes the Wii has hardware #s but of all the Wii owners I know.....none of them have gone out to buy another game beyond Wii Sports. Maybe Wii PLAY because they get the extra controller.
