Is there a single product Microsoft has ever produced that was not drastically stolen from another companies work?

1. Bill Gates stole the source code before it was patent for his first operating system.
2. Windows servers usually steal features from Linux ones.
3. Internet Explorer steals most of its features from Firefox who steals a few of it's features from Opera, and gets most of the rest of it from people that make add-ons but of course Internet Explorer is the crappiest.
4. Xbox hired a ton of ex Sega employees to make the original Xbox.
5. I've heard stories of all the coding from most of their OS being code from other companies, but Vista was their first from scratch coding, (probably why it blows chunks and has none of its good features from XP)

If Microsoft had just 1 more innovative bone, it'd have 1 in the entire company O_o

"Sony approached IBM to create the Cell processor in 2001, with plans to target a Christmas 2005 launch for the PS3. Microsoft approached IBM in 2002, and it appears Sony agreed to let IBM not only see early prototypes of Cell, but purchase components as well."

am i crazy...or should this be re-written as "Microsoft approached IBM in 2002, and it appears Sony agreed to let MICROSOFT not only see early prototypes of the cell, but purchase components as well."

1) i dont think sony would have to agree to let IBM see the own product that they were designing
2) i dont think sony would have to agree to let IBM purchase a product from itself.

You guys should read the prologue of the book. It is quite interesting and I might actually purchase it. (http://www.amazon.com/Race-New-Game-Machine-Playstation/dp/0806531010) Click on the image of the book and it will allow you read the prologue.

Microsoft went to IBM to look for a chip they can use in there new console. IBM offered every product they currently had at that time. Bill Gates was not interested in any of those products and a senior engineer who was working on the cell processor told him about a new product they are currently working on. Bill Gates was immediately interested and offered IBM billion dollars to produce it for them. The guy who wrote this book actually was the lead designer for the cell. He was looking very fortunate to help sony lead the way for a true next generation of gaming. He wrote in the prologue he felt betrayed by IBM's CEO to let his years of work and effort go to help a competitor.

Actually, this all is not quite correct. It should be said, that the power technology was originally used in modern generation of IBM mainframes at the begining of 2000..., _and_ same kind of processors was used inside Apple computers (before they transit them onto Intel...), and M$ XBOX's chip is more like Power than Cell which is inside PS3, so from my perspective, Cell is more modern technology then Power (P5, I believe) used inside XBOX.
Nevertheless, bus architecture inside PS3 seems made a little bit adhoc...based on different reports I've read from forums.

Its easy to tell that MS took some pieces "before they were finished"... look at the failure rate when it was released... But that was also due to cheap parts.
Lol... business can be so funny sometimes.

This isn't a forum ... it is a blog.

Perhaps you will find you solution on a place like...oh I don't know...the official playstation forums?...where they discuss issues like this? Here...I'll even give you the link: http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board?board.id=psnetwork I suggest bookmarking it for further use.

If you are this cranky maybe you should be in bed instead of on your PS3.

Actually knightsray I don't think I told him he couldn't mouth off...I mentioned that he is mouthy for a new user because, in my experience, you will get more favorable response from a community if you are polite and reasonable in your actions...especially when you are a new user. You willl notice that all his comments are down bid...that would be the community here speaking...not me in isolation.

Given all that I still gave him the answer he needed to address his issue...what did YOU do for him? Oh, nothing, so thanks for helping out.

If you think my writing style is condescending perhaps if stems from your own lack of self worth? Can't help you with that. Cheers.

there is nothing new...people could imagine that but won't take any risk to say it. however, the world works like that. Although IBM is the one who developed the Xenus processor, MS has not any experience on that area, so no way it could be helpful. It is just like for sony starts to make SO, but in technology sony has a lot to teach to many company, just watch the difference in the way the ps3 manages the heat and the way the xbox 360 manages the heat that became a big issue on that console. I used to be a sony fan but i have to be honest after the whole ps3 life till now, i started to prefer ms, at least they are not so proud to invest money. I believe that sony had the opportunity to win this challenge since the beginning but it didn't. It could have added more memories since it wouldn't be expensive close to others real expensive components. It could have decided to save many important titles but they didn't. In conclusion, sony is not mine i don't own the company and i don't take any profit from it neither microsoft is, so i don't care how, the only thing which is really important is the final result. I hope that sony will gain terrain again but i don't count on that except for a few episodes.

I'm surprised no-one else (well okay, Intel) has a piece of this pie. The fact that consoles are turning into secondary home computers, I wouldn't be surprised if the CPU manufacturer's brand was advertised as much as the console's company itself, much like PC's today.

The original xbox had an Intel Pentium III processor in it right? It was a one off processor but still very much made by Intel with MMX commands etc.....

I applaud IBM for being good business people. When the consoles were spec'd to come out and they were toting hardware, anyone could surmise they were going to make coin. IBM working with Toshiba and Sony on the cell. IBM making the Power three-core for the Xbox. Ummmm, M$ please place money in left hand. $ony, please place money in right hand.

Thank you, 'it's how business get's done!'

What both chips the Cell and the Xenos have in common is a PowerPC core which is nothing that is Sony specific and powered the last Apple generation. And even these cores are quite different which tells me that beside the overall IBM knowhow and the manufacturing expertise there was close to zero sharing between both customers. Looks like this book is based on constructed theory.

Sounds more like the author/s know for a fact some of the tech in the Cell was used in the Xenon, the way the article words it.

I really don't think so. The Cell and The Xenos are beside the fact that they are based on a PowerPC architecture (something that is if I remember right a kind of "open-source" architecture already) totally different beasts. With the same argument someone can argue that Apple subsidized the current generation of game consoles. The book might be interesting read in terms of the development process IBM went thru, but again, I don't see how Sony sponsered the 360.

Just checked the book on Amazon and using the Look Inside function there you can actually read the books prologue which is obviously the part of the book this article is referring.

Guess what, they guys are actually talking about the PowerPC core as the part being shared between both CPUs. Not that I wanna downplay the part of the PPE inside the Cell, but the PowerPC architecture is actually something that was in line with IBM's PPC roadmap anyway, something IBM tried to offer Apple as a next generation CPU. Obviously Apple was more interested in low power CPUs and moved over to Intel. Again, the book might be an interesting read in general, but the fact that Sony or better STI sponsered the 360 is kind of stupid statement.

If I remember correctly from my wild and crazy Apple fanboy days, a large PR reason that Apple went with Intel was because IBM promised availability of a 3.0 Ghz G5 processor and couldn't/wouldn't deliver on it, while they were delivering results for Microsoft and the 360.

It is weird to think that while the Mac got beat up a lot in the gaming press for not being a "game machine" that the tech that was used to power it since 1996 was the forerunner to power this generations' consoles.

Well, if I remember right it was not the 3.0 Ghz at such IBM wasn't able to deliver, it was the power consumption that came with it. IBM at that time wasn't able to provide some decent low power laptop CPUs. Intel obviously was. But then again I might be wrong. Happy new year ...

This is bullshit, the only things the two CPU have in common is the Power PC SMT core, and Power PC CPUs have been widely used from Apple computers to even Motorola and Samsung products (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PowerPC). The key feature of the CELL is the 9 SPU embeded in the chip (6 available to programmers), and this latest feature is protected by various patents; nobody can use the CELL without SONY touching money for that.
If this article was true, there would be a billion dollars SONY/IBM/Microsoft lawsuit considering the amounts in stake ...

back when PS3 was suposed to be a 4.2GHz machine, it had 8 SPU's, later, it drops a SPU (to 7) & down to 3.2Ghz, then shortly before they started making them, they turned a SPU off.
PS3 has 6 SPU's active, and 1 that is off, reserved (as I understand it) for if a SPU was to fail (ie- a back up)

On a random tangent...I think the jump to Intel for Apple was very critical to today's current developments. The whole Motorola/IBM partnership to make the G4/G5 Power PC series flopped b/c development simply fast enough. As a result, Apple's machines, although unique from other PC architecture, were still lagging in comparative speed tests. So as a cost-cutting measure, it was a good decision by jobs and in any case, it's enabled the platform to run two OS's if needed, which is a key selling point for macs right now (also important in terms of minimizing heat issues from what I remember). Of course, it also makes for a slightly less compelling argument as to why one should own a mac in the first place outside of the OS.

It's not even close to the same thing. Sony and Nintendo were working together and then Nintendo dropped Sony. The only thing going on here is Sony and Microsoft buying their processors from the same company and that company was showing Microsoft what it was making for Sony.
