I think I'm the only one who prefers local multiplayer rather than online (see smash bros)

You're not alone. Multiplayer in general is just more fun with all of the players together in the same room.

If its a game which is fun to play and has a lasting appeal, I enjoy playing online (e.g. TF2)

But some games are just built to give a few people a good time in local multiplayer. Rock Band, LittleBigPlanet and Motorstorm 2, for instance.

I actually think most people do prefer local multiplayer on games like smash bros where the screen doesn't need to be split. It's not always practical to get people to come over just to play a few games, though, so that's where the online service needs to step up.

I'm sure everyone prefers local multiplayer, well I do at least, but with my group of friends spread all over the place at college, and my brother in Hawaii it's sort of hard to play local multiplayer, no? This is why online multiplayer is great, it still allows me to play with with the people I enjoy playing video games with.

Well if online multiplayer is in a game, you don't want it to be half-assed do you? So it's worth docking points if it's a cumbersome experience, which SSBB's online is.

I don't think it should be called a disappointment if the online multiplayer was somewhat cumbersome. Local multiplayer is the best way to play it, and always will be for that kind of game. A mediocre online mode doesn't hurt the game that badly.

Splitscreen IS better. It's such a better experience to be in a room with friends hanging out than across the country.

However, It's not always a choice. A bunch of my friends went off to different colleges. Can we sit in the same room and enjoy some splitscreen co-op? Of course not, so the closest we get is playing online through XBOX Live and Steam, and yea, it's not the same thing, but it's pretty much as close as it gets. That's why it's disappointing that I can't really play a seamless online game of brawl with some friends whom I used to play the original SSB with. Just starting the game with friends is a hassle, and then you have to hook up on XBL just to get voice chat? Half the fun of playing Smash Bros. with friends is the shouting and yelling at each other!

Its nice to see Civ. Rev. get some love.

I picked up the game at launch day and continued to play it (on almost a daily basis) for about five months.

So far its my favourite version of the Civilization franchise.

Civ Rev was a change from Civ 4 much like Railroads was a changed from Rail Tycoon 3: oversimplified toony crap. Sins? Software distribution was nice but since when is space a 2d flat plane? I might expect that from a turn based 4X, but not an RTS. I'm just going to disagree with over half of those choices. Or maybe it was just a bad year.

The decision to make Sins take place on a plane was intentional. It wasn't necessary to add another axis, it would have just made things unnecessarily complex.

Also, thanks to orbital physics, galaxies and solar systems tend to be essentially two-dimensional.

Thank you for mentioning World of Goo. I'd have hoped it'd have been in the lower end of the top 10 games of 08 for Joystiq, but I'm glad it's getting recognition from so many gaming websites.

Cannot wait to hear what 2Dboy are doing next, but whatever it is, can it really live up to what they set with World of Goo?

+1

World of Goo was some of the most innovative gameplay I had the pleasure of experiencing in a long time. Shame more people don't recognize that at year's end.

That said (looking at the honorable mentions): EVE > Wrath of the Lich King, especially the EVE expansion Quantum Rise. Did QR deliver much content? No - but it made the core gameplay much more enjoyable by virtually eliminating lag and the Orca was one of the biggest game-changers - what did WotLK bring? More drivel to be chomped through by the mobs? Ew. I prefer smaller amounts of lag-free and bug-free content than large amounts of beta software, but that's just me.

What is it with the GTA hate? I'm all for journalistic integrity, but this seems like people are just starting to hop on the bandwagon. Why did it receive so many 10s across the board and praise from just about everyone, including Joystiq, but now it's labeled one of the "most disappointing" games of 2008? I just don't get it.

On the internet, once one person complians about something you have to agree or you get laughed at. Personally I don't mind, since I usually get laughed at anyway, but it is interesting nontheless.

The same thing happened with Sonic Adventure, and all the Sonic games since then actually...

All the hate started when GTA4 won the GOTY award at the VGAs.

Seriously people, don't hate the playa hate the game.

Oh wait... Thats what they're doing.

Oh well, you get my point.

Where's the praise from "Joystiq" – we didn't run a review of the game, or even a preview. In fact, there was no coverage of the game – outside of the news – from us at all.

It was ridiculously overrated at launch.

The magazines raced to see who would give it more tens faster.

It's just not as involving as previous versions.

And graphically, it's kind of awful. Check out Burnout:Paradise to see graphics on the same level, but running at 60fps instead of 12.

Boy, Burnout:Paradise got rooked.

Look, all I'm saying is to be careful of jumping on the bandwagon. I don't think Joystiq's credibility should be questioned at all. I've just noticed that a lot of people seem to have gone from praising GTAIV to calling it one of the "most disappointing games of 2008." It all seems to have started around the time GTA4 started getting top honors at places like the VGAs, Time, and Newsweek. That's all I'm saying.

I have to agree with Alexander on GTA IV's final mission being ''bland''. I felt that the developers could do better.

My favorite mission has to be ''Three Leaf Clover''. That mission kicked ass!

Is Three Leaf Clover the Heat mission?

If so, I agree it was great. It probably was the high point of the game. It just got more repetitive from there and by the time it was at the end, I was glad to be done with it.

Compare that to Vice City, where after finishing it, I just started to drive around the city and cause trouble to try different things.

The best is picking up Roman in a helicopter and parking on high building so that when Roman opens his door to get out he falls off of the building. Later, he'll call you to pick him up at the hospital. Rinse and repeat.

SSBB and GTA4 are great games and they need our love, but LittleBigPlanet? I dunno, I'm not gonna say anything bad about the game.

All I have to say about LittleBigPlanet is this:

Its a good game but its just not what I expected.

'Sending out vibes for publishers to pace releases better throughout the year (summer would be nice).'

Amen to that. CAPCOM seem to be the only company who realises there's anything other than the 'Holiday season'. I don't get why no-one releases games in summer. I mean the theory is that everyone's outside, or on holiday, but come on. Go outside, when it's that hot and sunny? You must be joking...

I sit around and do nothing in the summer while no games are out.

Right after Christmas comes midterms, when I have no time at all and all the blockbusters are being released. I'd much prefer game releases in the summer.

Burnout:Paradise can't make the top 10 or the "best of the rest".

Frankly, I think the reviewers are lying down on the job, forgetting such a great (and clearly influential) game just because it came out in January.

It's on James's list. Perhaps it's not also on Alexander's list because Alexander doesn't seem to be a big fan of racing games? I mean, I don't see any other racers up there, and just from looking at his list, he seems to prefer slower-paced games like strategy games and RPGs.

I honestly think Melee was better than Brawl, idk why though, maybe it's the overall feel, Brawl seemed so watered down, and i absolutely abhorred the menu system....Actually now that i think about it, there was a lot of white colors in brawl....it burnt my eyes. Hopefully Nintendo makes realizes how much money they can make by making a new console that's actually able to let you play games online and maybe they realize they could make friend codes and parental controls OPTIONS!!!! damm..

I agree with the disappointments 100%

I just didn't get LBP and why it was so great because for me it was too boring

GTA4, I stopped at mid-point because it just got boring and I realize it was really lacking in content compared to the older games as if they took a step back in content and a step foward in graphics

SSBB was great and I loved it but the crappy online killed it and I stop playing it soon after, then I sold my Wii.

Wow I can't believe there are people at Joystiq who actually agree with me that Little Big Planet wasn't the 2nd Coming of Christ...

Bravo sir.

As for GTAIV the hype was way too much. And the media was all over it like white on rice including Joystiq. The universal praise was completely undeserved. So no it didn't start at the VGAs. It started months before that.

"...driving home that Rock Band isn't just a game, but a constantly updating music platform."

See, that's what I didn't like Rock Band 2, because Rock Band 1 was supposed to be a 'music platform' and then not 10 months later they go and release RB2. Everyone complains that Guitar Hero games are released too frequently, but then Rock Band goes and does the same thing. Why didn't they just patch the original with the new/better interface? I mean, I appreciate the upgrades and that songs can be transferred over, but it all seems completely unneccesary to go release a whole new package not one year after the original's release. My bet is that we'll have Rock Band 3 by next Christmas, and they'll be touting it as "its very own platform".
