That picture for Gears 2 always bothers me. Is the locust's head really not there or am I missing something?

I just wanted to pass on my congratulations for a very well written Top 10 Games of 2008. A real pleasure to read. It's so refreshing to read a blog that consistently discusses video games in an educated and engaging manner. Over the past year especially the quality of the Joystiq team's writing has just got better and better. Keep up the good work as you have me hooked to your blog awaiting your amusing, honest, and consistently pleasing commentary. Cheers.

the huge probelm with GTA IV are the missions where you gotta tail all the way to another place.. go futhers.. further still, and then FINALLY get to the small part that makes or break a mission... atleast with fallout 3 once you trek you can get to a place quickly again.. i know it takes away from the city feel, and i probably should learn public transportation better, but still, there are too many parts that let you detach completely away and not really care about furthing the plot when you compare it to some of the only on this list.. i love GTA IV but it is flawed - and the multiplayer was kinda lame too...

If you don't play shooters you're not a gamer. GET WITH THE PROGRAM.

I'm counting four shooters. Am I doing it wrong?

No, you're just being ridiculously strict in your definition of shooter. Though I exaggerated only slightly.

Shooters:
Mirror's Edge
Dead Space
Far Cry 2
GoW2
Fallout 3
L4D
MGS4

You can say "But it's parkour!" or "But it's stealth action!" or "But it's got RPG elements!" all you want, but they're still shooters. Not even going to get into Fable 2 on this list, let alone at number one. Also wondering where Persona 4, TWEWY, and GTA are on this list. But whatevs.

Okay, let's hear why Mirror's Edge is a shooter. Also, what happened to the eighth shooter?

...It's not that hard. It's a game, you pick up guns, you shoot stuff. See again: You can say it's parkour/free-running/whatever all you want, at the end of the day it's an FPS, or an FP-Adventure with a -heavy- similarity to your typical FPS at best. As for the eighth, I said I was exaggerating only slightly.

Well, I just think it's unfair that you're not castigating us for picking a shooter as our GOTY then. I picked up guns and shot stuff in Fable 2, you know. Oh, and hey, I just downloaded the MGS level pack for LBP, which completely transforms it into a shooter (Guns? Check. Shooting stuff? Check.)

Now that I'm done undermining your opinion with ridiculous examples, I think your definition of shooter is extremely tenuous. The genre is marked by its overall design and structure, not the mere presence of guns and shooting (is Tomb Raider a shooter too?) Your description of Mirror's Edge as a shooter, a game which I completed without firing a single shot, is thus pretty alien to me.

"Undermining my opinion?" Hon, you didn't undermine squat. That's why it's an -opinion-.

I think I'm done with this, though. The immaturity and personal level to which this is being taken is just making Joystiq look embarrassing.

Although I think Resistance 2 is definitely better than Gears 2 (not by much) because once you beat the both awesome single players the 60 player online for R2 actually WORKS...

That been said I still wouldn't put either one in GOTY category before Battlefield Bad Company. I still play it all the time online with friends and it's one of the most fun console games ever

I felt that Fable 2 was a great game but not overly memorable, apart from the dog that is. I'd have gone with MGS4 for it's ambitious scale which it seemed to pull off.

I can't believe World of Goo isn't on this list. I love the whole idea of taking a simple gaming mechanic and turning it into a really tough puzzle game. We've seen it with Braid and latest with World of Goo which, in my honest opinion, deserves to be on this list. Scrap out Mirror's Edge f.ex.

It's weird. I often fall deeply in love broken games. That was the case with two of my favorites this year: Mirror's Edge and No More Heroes. Heap the love on MGS4 by all means, it certainly earned it but damn, No More Heroes gave it a run for its post-modern gaming trophy. The plot was cracked, the characters bizarrely fleshed out and the actual fighting engine was one of the most fun I played all year. Too bad the open world sat uncomfortably between parody and downright awful. I have high hopes for a sequel nonetheless. Then there was Mirror's Edge which I'm happy to see made the list, because it felt so right even if the game made a ton of misteps, that core joy of movement never changed.

In my personal top ten would also be Valkyria Chronicles which made me love the RTSRPG genre again. Even if the voice acting and the Japanese scripts were generic to a fault the story and the loving attention to detail in the presentation was perfectly executed.

Last but not least. I gotta give props to Okami. I never played the PS2 version but Wii port of it was pure joy. The only game I cleared with 100%.

I dont know if i would consider dead space a staple in the survival horror gen. There are gameplay mechanics and elements that represent the exact opposite of what defines a survival horror game.i think it could of been a great one it just wasnt deep enough. For christ sake a beam shoots out of your hand telling you exactly where to go(a rising trend that im not a big fan of) to mow down the next wave of enemies,it feels more like an action adventure but a good one nonetheless

I like the fact that GTA4 was not on the list. That was an insufferable bore of a game, for me anyway.

Kudos on Far Cry 2's inclusion, I was surprised to see it since it didn't get a whole lot of attention anywhere else.

What are you, Xplay?

I'm just glad these critics are suddenly forgetting about No More Heroes for their 2008 best-ofs. That crap's already the most overrated game of all time.
