Report: PS3 leads Wii ... in web browsing

If you've ever wondered "Does anyone actually browse the web on consoles?," Market Share has an answer for you: yes, but not very many people. The firm reports that .04% of all web browsing is performed on PS3, compared to the .01% of Wii, the only other current-gen console with a browser.
Of course, PS3's browser is built-in; Wii's particular version of Opera costs 500 Wii Points ($5) and, well, people have to seek it out among the other WiiWare offerings. So, tell us, are you reading Joystiq on a console, and if so, which one?

I used to read on Wii a bit, haven't tried on PS3; it is just waaay too much of a hassle, and it loads slower than my laptop.
SimbaDogg @ Jan 2nd 2009 11:05PM
sometimes i'll hit up my ps3 browser...but only if its a website that doesn't open too well w/ my phone. being that i have skyfire (kickass), there's not a lot that doens't open up. but considering that the bluetooth keyboard that i have for my phone also works for my ps3, i think i'll be using chat/messaging/browsing a bit more
ruibing @ Jan 3rd 2009 12:28AM
Try using the PS3 browser for multimedia sites, like Hulu. It is amazing.
SoCoolCurt (PSN: KillaKornbread - XBL: SoCoolCurt) @ Jan 3rd 2009 12:50AM
i used to use my PS3 browser in the morning to browse Joystiq for early morning news since i don't have to get out of bed to do it. and since the last update, i've used it numerous times to be able to lay on my bed and catch up on the prime time shows i missed while i was at work via Hulu (usually Heroes and Fringe). im sure i'll be doing it again when those shows start back up in a couple weeks.
as for the Wii browser, i got it when it first came out and was free. i used to use it when my friends where over to look at MySpace Music sites and YouTube on the TV (before i bought a high def TV with PC inputs). it did it's job then and at one point both browsers where about even, but with all the new features of the PS3 browser, it certainly has the edge in my book.
Haggard @ Jan 3rd 2009 4:35AM
I use my PS3 browser so that my friends and I can view Neil Peart drum solos on youtube in the living room when we're pissed out of our heads.
Extinction @ Jan 3rd 2009 1:41PM
Something is wrong with your router then, PS3's browser is many times faster than Wii's.
Lkr @ Jan 2nd 2009 10:36PM
If you consider the iPod Touch a console or handheld, I browse with that sometimes
ostentaneous @ Jan 2nd 2009 10:50PM
Yup, I read on my iPhone daily.
SoCoolCurt (PSN: KillaKornbread - XBL: SoCoolCurt) @ Jan 3rd 2009 1:01AM
well it's no iPhone but i probably do the majority of my browsing on my Windows Mobile Pocket PC.
Farmer @ Jan 3rd 2009 3:15AM
Im writing on mine right now... LOL-(iPhone in joke)

Blackberry, PSP, and Dual-monitor PC for me!
Dr Jeckyl and Mr ESC. @ Jan 2nd 2009 11:22PM
I really didn’t enjoy my experience using the PSP for that. PSP web browser couldn't be more annoying.
1-Type the google address for the first time and then add it to favorites.
2-Then type using the PSP text box (which is as bad as the xbox360 one) the name of the site or subject you want to browse for about 2 to 4 minutes.
3-You notice that site contains a lot of ads or stuff; you get a memory error.
4-Clean memory, Try again.
5-Give up.
6-Watch sexay pr0ns using Google image search.
7-????
8-Cry yourself to sleep.
9-Profit.
(Keep in mind I did that when my PSP had a 3.something firmware maybe nowadays is better)
Little Big PSN ID: johnnynumber5 @ Jan 2nd 2009 11:58PM
Agreed.
Maybe because I still have the original fatty PSP but I have never had any luck web browsing with the PSP. I always get the memory error unless it's a mobile specific site. Even with the newest firmware it's still gimped.
Erik Stroud @ Jan 3rd 2009 12:14AM
I hate using the PSP. I use my PS3 with Linux, but thats about the only console. If you include ipod touch, then that too.
(01) @ Jan 3rd 2009 11:36AM
Can you really "watch" a picture?
What's a "sexay pr0n"?
Sorry, I enjoy my porn, but I've never understood the point of mobile porn....especially using Google image search on the go. (shrugs) maybe just me.
j.howlett @ Jan 2nd 2009 10:40PM
i read joystiq on my ps3 alot or my phone. i play a game take a break surf the web and go back in, or i watch videos
Donald @ Jan 2nd 2009 10:42PM
I tried it a couple of times on the Wii and even left a comment. But now my Wii browsing is pretty much limited to ordering food and viewing SBEmails on my TV.
ice~ @ Jan 2nd 2009 10:44PM
I use my PS3 browser for porn...SPANKWIRE BIG SCREEN FTW!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SimbaDogg @ Jan 2nd 2009 11:13PM

The internet is for Porn
Why you think the net was born? PORN PORN PORN.
...Jan... @ Jan 2nd 2009 11:24PM
I swear the Wii browser used to be able to access those sites before the final version of the Opera Browser...Or so I heard.
Maybe that's why Flash seems to be so limited on the Wii now.
Wiinterfang @ Jan 3rd 2009 12:22AM

for porn porn porn!!.
ice~ @ Jan 3rd 2009 2:58AM
Haha I love joystiq, always making me laugh :)
SirFishouse @ Jan 2nd 2009 10:44PM
For joystiq, I mostly use the PC or the phone when I'm on the John... Only time I use the PS3 for browsing is when I am traveling or at a friends house with my PS3 and they're hogging the PC.
MowDownJoe @ Jan 3rd 2009 11:05AM
Funny how you post after the porn chatter.
And, yeah... I really don't use my console's web browsers.
BobbyD @ Jan 4th 2009 3:35AM
I use ps3 browser for youtube and hulu. It's ok and serves its purpose but its not good.
Zertoss @ Jan 2nd 2009 10:48PM
I only use my Wii when I want to look something up and Comcast has bungled my internet connection (again). I just hop on someone else's unsecure wireless network (there's plenty of them in range in my apartment complex) and do a quick Google search and maybe check Comcast's network status (useless page, it always says Healthy even when they are aware of a fiber cut causing a major outage).
All of my Joystiqery is done from a PC. I've never used the PS3's browser.
Roto13 @ Jan 2nd 2009 10:49PM
I have used the Wii browser for YouTube in the past. I can't say I'd be too heartbroken if I could never use it again, though.
jarhead906 @ Jan 2nd 2009 10:54PM
Once in my dorm, I use the PS3's Web Browser because it's easier to remain sitting than to get up, walk five feet, and use my Macbook.
Performance? PS3 beats the Wii's Opera hands down. I tried running the Wii Video channel or whatever it's called and it took five minutes just for the introductory video to begin playing.
Popfrogs @ Jan 2nd 2009 11:14PM
It appears they've tuned the PS3 browser but it could still stand to be replaced with Firefox (when the portable version for phones drops soon).
kavendano14 @ Jan 2nd 2009 11:44PM
You have a MacBook? Can I have sex with you?
Just so you know you could've called it a laptop, nobody asked for the model.
jarhead906 @ Jan 3rd 2009 12:19AM
Just a heads up but I'm not one of those people who act like purchasing a Mac makes me part of a social movement.
I apologize for mentioning what I use. God forbid someone could relate to me in case I had been asking for help.
Of course, we all know that laptops running Windows are exactly the same as those running OS X.
Sora @ Jan 3rd 2009 12:41AM
"people who act like purchasing a Mac makes me part of a social movement."
Do you read Maddox, too?

actually mike, Randy did ask, in the last line of the article...
Jeepers Creepers 712 @ Jan 3rd 2009 10:32AM
Kind of agree with Kaven.
I mean, I don't say "I'm gonna go wash my Hummer" - I say gonna go wash my car.
Or "I'm gonna go get some Cheesy Gordita Crunches from Taco Bell on Ford and Middlebelt" instead of "I'm gonna go grab some food".
Or even... "Oh, I'm just listening to some music on my iPod Touch" instead of simply "I'm listening on my MP3 player". You're asserting the brand/product for some sort of recognition, praise, or envy.
Usually people make it a bit more generic, because it's pointless for details unless you're assuming we have more interest than you actually deserve. It's a laptop, or a notebook.
Announcing it's a MacBook sounds pretentious.
narutohendrix @ Jan 3rd 2009 12:38PM
@Jeepers
Please tell me that was joke, because if you were serious, you must be stupid. If I'm getting Taco Bell, why wouldn't I say where I'm going? Does picking up my friends food make me pretentious?
Jeepers Creepers 712 @ Jan 3rd 2009 7:23PM
Dude, read what I said. I never said (nor implied) that saying you were going to Taco Bell was pretentious. I was pointing out that over sharing is retarded. Notice the "going to TB at X location and getting Y items" - You seemed to ignore the point.
Also, read my quote. Literacy is your friend.
"Announcing it's a MacBook sounds pretentious."
Didn't realize there were so many Apple whores on Joystiq. Brand allegiance is so pathetic.
aristokrat @ Jan 5th 2009 2:24PM
How is someone going to come on Joystiq and criticize people for brand loyalty? Have you ever even read the comments here?
I think the more glaring issue here is how the only part of his comment you noticed was his use of MacBook. I read right over it without thinking twice, but apparently your hatred for Apple makes you see red every time a person mentions them or their products. In reference to your earlier examples, people do say "Hey, let's take the Hummer" and "Can I borrow your iPod" instead of the generics without issue. Do you also jump down people's throats when they ask you for a Kleenex®? Perspective: it's your friend.
Jeepers Creepers 712 @ Jan 6th 2009 2:08PM
Yeah, I usually correct them jokingly saying "sorry, all I have are tissues".
I also say adhesive strip instead of band-aid, and I never eat gelatin so "Jell-O" isn't an issue. I most definitely do not go to a restaurant and order a "Coke" when I want a cola beverage.
I didn't go into a red rage when I saw MacBook. I actually just consider all the words he uses instead of skimming through posts.
Shagittarius @ Jan 2nd 2009 11:03PM
Sometimes when I'm watching a Blu-ray my girlfriend has to pee. I use PS3s br0ws4r at that time till she comes back.

I check Joystiq on my iPod touch. And sometimes on my PS3. And rarely on my PC.
Scott @ Jan 2nd 2009 11:11PM
I don't know about PS3, but my problem with the Wii's browser is they refuse to let Opera (I've contacted Opera and they insist that the ball is in Nintendo's court) update the Flash player. I'd be all over my Wii's browser watching Hulu if I could.
Alex @ Jan 2nd 2009 11:11PM
never even considered using the PS3 browser to actually surf the web.
dun have a USB keyboard... it's kinda cumbersome without one, pressing away on the controller.

I use...a computer.
