Weekly Webcomic Wrapup hits a dry spell

We're all for taking a well-deserved holiday vacation, but we find it tough to argue for those in web-related industries to take a complete sabbatical from their regular work schedule. For instance, if we were able to tear ourselves away from an all-day New Year's Eve desert rave to write about Merv Griffin's Crosswords, we don't see why many of our regular contenders couldn't stop whatever it was they were doing, and whip up a hasty webcomic.

Luckily, we received a surplus of reader suggestions this week -- including a few nods to the surprise return of Hiimdaisy's fantastic illustrated Metal Gear Solid summaries. Thanks to everyone who sent in their suggestions -- and thanks in advance to those who, bearing witness to our open-mindedness, are going to tell us what comics should/shouldn't be included next week via a friendly, grammatically sound comment. Any dolt with half a brain can see the clear victor this week. Every single entry is a tired rehashing of something to do with "video games" except one- XKCD.

XKCD stands out by not having anything actually to do with video games, and instead ponders a more sublime subject, that of Rick Astley, the man second only to Chuck Norris in terms of interwebular awesomess.

XKCD asks the question that was so obvious no one thought to ask it- if we "Rick Roll," what does Rick do? The punchline (which of course I daren't spoil) reveals the answer to just that. And it is beyond your wildest dreams of hilarious.

Thus XKCD gets my vote this week.

And if you thought that this entire post was to just mock the inclusion of a comic that this week had absolutely nothing to do with video games- I really did vote for XKCD, because I thought it was amazing, and it truly one of my favorite XKCD strips thus far. I just thought I'd point out how odd it was that it was included.

So... who are you trying to reassure here?

you do realize xkcd is one of the MANY webcomics that isn't based on video gaming right? its just that joystiq is a gaming blog so usually the pick gaming comics. if you come to a game blog JUST to vote for a non game comic, you sir, are an idiot.

but yeah, if they wanted they could post a non gaming comic every week

no disrespect for xkcd, infact ive been reading it for years now, subscribed to their feed and all.

its just that a comic about something other than gaming shouldn't give you an upper hand on judging between gaming webcomics.

I LOVE xkcd. I quote it on a near daily basis and have archive binged the whole thing at least three times.

I just thought the point of joystiq's webcomic wrap up was video game webcomics, because in the past they've posted nonvideo game ones somewhere in the body paragraph, not in the wrap up.

The one thing that was missing from this xkcd comic that would have made it absolutely perfect is another panel with nothing but a big "YEAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!" to knock that CSI: Miami reference right out of the park.

Levi, that would be fucking hilarious, but I don't know if it would work in comic form, you really gotta hear that YYEEAAHH!

Joel McHale would be proud.

I dont know who that Hiimdaisy guy is, but that is easily the best comic this week

Voting for Penny Arcade, since I've been following the story its making fun of. Sure hope it doesn't get far in court, it truly is a ridiculous money grab. Going after the 'weaker' NCSoft first, testing the waters before possibly hitting Blizzard.

It's kinda like those dicks at Monster Cable. They have litigation against anybody with the name Monster or Cable in their name. Here is one of the many stories:

That is odd...I had been playing MGS3 just today. Anyway...I miss the way the guns sound in MGS3...they should have put that in MGS4.

Voted for xkcd just because it's just about the best comic ever.

My problem with it being there is it has nothing to do with video games, and why let it go this week but not any other week?

I'm voting for Hsu and Chan, they were the best thing about EGM. I hadn't realize this is where they had gone. Yay, now I can read them again.

I voted for that there Metal Gear Solid one.

I just remembered how awesome MGS3 was by reading that.

Hiimdaisy indeed, despite having never played a metal gear game (except for Twin Snakes, it would be impossible for me). It's deliciously over-the-top, something that would pass muster as a campy anime

Elswhere, it was a good week. Except for 2P Start. Cliches don't suddenly become awesome if you pile them all together

She's done comics from Metal Gear Solid 1 (and 2, for that matter) as well. You should check it out. Just browse back a couple of pages. :P

That MGS strip was about 50 panels too long. If tedium was its point then the author clearly succeeded in their goal.

Sums up the game pretty well, no? I enjoy the series, very much, but as Yahtzee said, they're badly in need of an editor. About 50% of the dialogue could be cut of the games, especially in the 4th game were most of it was completely unncessary and very boring.
