After the Laurent Fischer horse was beaten to death, Nintendo finally took notice and the Reggie declared that storage shortage "is becoming much more of a mainstream problem." A solution was announced, and all was right in the world.
So ... when can we expect this to be working? Iwata gave the general timeframe of "Spring 2009," but I'd like a few more specifics. The folks at Nintendo -- and to be fair, the same extends to most entertainment-related companies -- tend to give general "guesstimations," sometimes based on nothing more than wishful thinking. Yet this isn't the cure for cancer we're looking for; it's a simple file I/O procedure. I have no knowledge of the Wii's internal workings, nor do I pretend to, but I imagine that the ability to write to the SD card is prohibited primarily as some sort of anti-hacking measure. In other words, I'm under the impression that the solution for this problem is more of along the lines of "Hey, Wii Hardware: You know that thing we told you not to do? You can go ahead and do it." If this is true, I'm left to wonder why this wasn't enabled in a more timely manner through a recent system update.
