MS predicts a Playstation 3 price cut 'soon'

With a 28 million Xbox 360 base and keeping a sales lead over the Playstation 3, Microsoft knows that the worldwide console price cuts they enacted in 2008 have been a key component to their strategy. Something that Sony has yet to do with PS3, which Microsoft exec Aaron Greenberg finds surprising.

"We absolutely expect the PS3 price drop to happen in the next couple of months," Greenberg told Edge. "We're frankly surprised it's taken this long... I would expect they'd have to move on price, sooner than later, for sure." Color us surprised as well.

Continuing into 2009, Microsoft is well aware that Sony will become more aggressive in their PS3 pricing which, truth be told, is still an expensive piece of hardware for the casual market. Greenberg is right though, it's truly odd to see Sony staying firm on their pricing structure, especially with how things are playing out in the industry.

ha ha about time even tho i have owend one at one point in time im so happy i switched.

If it drops to a decent price in the UK I may pick one up. I've been looking for a standalone BR player but I'm going to wait and see now. If I can get a BR player that also plays PS3 games then all the better!!

I am an electrical engineer who develops electronic products. I hear two things a lot that kind of seem ironic.

1) Regarding hardware failures of the consoles: why don't they use better hardware, more reliable stuff, longer testing cycles, instead of rushing to market with this cheapo stuff.

2) Why don't the cut the prices on this stuff? It is too expensive, they should have had a big price cut 6 months ago. Why does it take so long for them to release this console or come out with improvements.

I deal with both sides of that in my work and the trade-offs are difficult. They could design a console that would never fail and doesn't have cooling issues, or heating, or whatever; but it'd be a year late and cost 3x as much.

The current market has driven us toward cheap poorly manufactured crap for years. The only key metric to most consumers is cost. So, quality and reliability have suffered. You almost can't buy good stuff anymore.
