Reeves: PlayStation 'on target' to start earning profit
Step 1: Release PlayStation 3.
Step 2: ?????
Step 3: Profit!
David Reeves, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, believes that Sony is "on target" to figure out that elusive second step. "The most important thing for us as a company in the very short term is for us to start making money," Reeves explained rather candidly in a recent article on the official PlayStation website. "This is a pledge that was made last March and is something that we are still very much on target to achieve." His tone was considerably more positive than one adopted by recent rumors, which have Sony on the "brink of upheaval."
Quizzed -- or rather, politely asked to contribute in a promotional piece -- about 2009's most exciting developments, Reeves noted that once the company's flagship system is out of the financial woods, things will really take off for PlayStation and its fans. "2009 promises to be a very exciting year for PS3, with blockbuster titles such as Heavy Rain and Killzone 2 coming out, whilst we have the music and video download service becoming available towards the end of the year," he said. And don't forget about our pal, the PSP, which will have games taking "full advantage of the new enhanced screen."

Sony could have made tons of money and lead the current gen if the public knew they were selling Playstation 3's and not racist squirrels and crying death babies.
Gaucho @ Jan 6th 2009 9:49AM
Step 1: Release PlayStation 3.
Step 2: Release PlayStation 4 at a cheaper price with at least one big exclusive from the get go
Step 3: Profit!
Even the underwear gnomes would buy one.
Ethan @ Jan 6th 2009 9:50AM
Man he's good.
PSN: Aggie_CEO @ Jan 6th 2009 9:51AM
all I can say is it will be Rather Interesting to see what the PS3 does id ALL of its Exclusive Games PLANNED for this year are ACTUALLY RELEASED this year........
I mean I know Microsoft likes to keep stuff under wraps but does the 360 have anything aside from the 2 Halo based games for this year??
PSN: Aggie_CEO @ Jan 6th 2009 9:52AM
damn me and my spelling......."id" = if
WRE @ Jan 6th 2009 9:56AM
Don't worry, man. We all assumed you had a cold.
baby sea tuna @ Jan 6th 2009 9:57AM
That's a very good question. Outside of the DLC coming for a bunch of existing games (GTA, Fallout, Fable, Tomb Raider) I haven't heard of any MS exclusives slated for 09. Oh, except Ninja Blade, which looks exactly like Ninja Gaiden except...you know...lousy.
The upside of this is that, unlike last year, I might actually play my PS3 this year.
chimp o death @ Jan 6th 2009 10:15AM
I know what you mean, the 360 line-up is a little sparse for 2009. But on the other hand, at this time last year, Gears 2 wasn't even officially confirmed. Plus one of the best titles of 2007 (COD4) only became awesome at E3 of that year.
Hyams @ Jan 6th 2009 10:21AM
360 has:
Halo Wars,
Halo: ODST,
Alan Wake,
Star Ocean 4,
Ninja Blade,
Kingdom Under Fire 2
Mass Effect 2 (?).
And ... I know there's something else, but I can't remember what... =(
Hyams @ Jan 6th 2009 10:39AM
Oh, scratch KUF2. That's multiplat. My bad.
PSN: Aggie_CEO @ Jan 6th 2009 10:50AM
I wouldn't really count Star Ocean either.......we all know its just a TIMED Exclusive......
and is Alan Wake actually gonna come out this year?? it was scheduled for release last year too.........
Vcize @ Jan 6th 2009 11:23AM
I'd be very surprised if Mass Effect 2 doesn't drop this year.
Hyams @ Jan 6th 2009 11:37AM
That's true, but the reason I gave it a question mark is because there's no confirmation that it'll be an exclusive.
EA own the IP and the dev now, and they're not known for making exclusives. Unless Microsoft have moneyhatted the whole trilogy, it's possible it'll show up on the PS3 too.
Strategy_Panda (The Sandwich Poisoning Crew) @ Jan 6th 2009 9:53AM
I've been talking to a lot of people who have bought a PlayStation recently but are completely "casual" gamers, in that the games the play consist of Buzz Quiz, Singstar, The Sims, and Guitar Hero.
I just find it odd that *I* tend to run into more casual players with a PS3, and more "hardcore" gamers with a 360.
baby sea tuna @ Jan 6th 2009 10:03AM
How is that surprising, exactly? EVERYONE I knew (including at least 2 former girlfriends) had a PS2 and I would only classify a small percentage of those as "hardcore gamers."
Strategy_Panda (The Sandwich Poisoning Crew) @ Jan 6th 2009 10:18AM
I guess brand recognition goes a long way.
I just feel odd that in a conversation about the PS3, I can mention Little Big Planet and receive a blank stair.
OnToGlory @ Jan 6th 2009 10:23AM
Buzz! is freaking awesome by the way on the PS3. Great party game.
Pie in yo face!
Wiinterfang @ Jan 6th 2009 9:53AM
A friend of mine told me that the Cheap PS3 that was going to be release on 06 it's gonna have a 16 HDD only..I mean I know that the Xbox Arcade doesn't have a harddrive but that sucks, there's a lot of PS3 that needed to be downloaded into the hard drive.
PSN: Aggie_CEO @ Jan 6th 2009 9:59AM
what the FUCK did you just say???
Wiinterfang @ Jan 6th 2009 10:00AM
I'm very sensitive about my English Jerk :(.
Duke @ Jan 6th 2009 10:02AM
That was one weird ass post...
Strategy_Panda (The Sandwich Poisoning Crew) @ Jan 6th 2009 10:04AM
I think if downloaded your PS3 into its hard drive, a mini black hole would be created.
Wiinterfang @ Jan 6th 2009 10:06AM
Ok Ok Ok.
There's this rumor/announcement that the PS3 is going to be cheaper this year.
But a friend of mine says that it's going to be yet another model and this one with a 16HDD.
I think that sucks because you need to download a lot of games into your Hard drive.
I hope it's clearer now.
PSN: Aggie_CEO @ Jan 6th 2009 10:07AM
well how about this.......type in your NATIVE language and we can all use a translator if we choose......at least then it would make more sense......
Wiinterfang @ Jan 6th 2009 10:08AM
NEVER!!!!!
Killjebus @ Jan 6th 2009 10:11AM
"What did you saaaaay? Waht waht whaaaaaaht?"
GiggMan @ Jan 6th 2009 10:15AM
If thats true, atleast you can upgrade later on to a 40gig+ real cheap. I doubt it's true though.
deaftly @ Jan 6th 2009 10:14AM
16 HDD's?!?!?!
Levi @ Jan 6th 2009 10:21AM
I understood, Wii, I understood. *hugs*
Hyams @ Jan 6th 2009 10:45AM
We've already had a 16GB PS3. That's what the 20GB really was, pretty much.
GundamWingEW @ Jan 6th 2009 9:53AM
Yeah sure.....
gravewolf @ Jan 6th 2009 10:02AM
Didnt you know that 2009 is the year for all things black?
PSN: Aggie_CEO @ Jan 6th 2009 10:04AM
I REALLY would like to believe that..........
but something tells me the cops are still gonna pull my black ass over just to fuck with me the same as always.......
gravewolf @ Jan 6th 2009 10:18AM
Uhhmmm im not American so im neither Republican nor Democrat and im not dissing Obama im actually happy he won and Bush got shoooeed.
PSN: Aggie_CEO @ Jan 6th 2009 11:35AM
ok........I'm not even talking politics........more like Racial profiling........lol
gravewolf @ Jan 6th 2009 10:06AM
Not with Obama as the new Prez.
Hyams @ Jan 6th 2009 10:15AM
Gundam, how do you account for KillJebus?
Hyams @ Jan 6th 2009 10:33AM
Well, it's nice to know you think I'm less deluded than dear Killjebus. ^_^
PSN: Aggie_CEO @ Jan 6th 2009 11:37AM
I'm KINDA a Sony Fanboy......damn sure aint Republican tho..
Konny @ Jan 6th 2009 1:06PM
I don't think killjebus exists anymore....
I mean his only line left was, "I'm glad Sony used NEW technology!" Poor guy, probably a republican now...
lol jk
gravewolf @ Jan 6th 2009 1:16PM
killjebus is a republican??!!??
gravewolf @ Jan 6th 2009 10:08AM
Plus a whole slew of exlcusive games along with multiplats got your butt covered!!
F1 @ Jan 6th 2009 10:10AM
???????= Black Magic & Human Sacrifices
Hyams @ Jan 6th 2009 10:13AM
It's certainly possible.
Production costs are lowering for the blu-ray technology; a new, smaller Cell chip will go into production early this year; raw materials costs are lowering; and the Japanese banks are making an effort to weaken the Yen so that Japanese business don't keep on getting raped by the exchange rate.
Furthermore, a lot of big titles that have cost them a lot of money - Killzone 2, HOME, LBP, GT5, GOWIII, InFamous, etc. - are now starting to be released, so they can start to make money and not just be big ol' money sinks.
Unless Sony do something really stupid (and I wouldn't put it past them) they should start to make a profit this year.
gravewolf @ Jan 6th 2009 10:27AM
Thats right, the ps3 this year is 30% cheaper to make so i think Reeves is not lying about finally getting a profit.Im just waiting for February so i can get my "evil and bitter republican hands" on Killzone 2.
Hyams @ Jan 6th 2009 10:36AM
Well, I'm left leaning, so if you hear a Helghast shouting, "We've gotta fall back! There is no hope here! We must retreat from this meaningless war!" that'll be me. ^_^
