Sony: PS3 holiday sales up 130%
Ian Jackson, VP of sales for Sony Computer Entertainment America, told CNET that internal data shows a 130% increase in PS3 sales during the holiday season (post-Black Friday). Jackson also claims that the PS3 has seen 40% sales growth during the calendar year. He expects the momentum to continue in to the new year ... but really, what else is he going to say? Now is not the time for a Sony exec to say anything ... troubling.
Playing with percentages is fun, but we don't really know if Jackson was speaking globally or about the US. If he's talking globally, it might very well be possible that the world is picking up America's sales slack. However, if Jackson is talking about the holiday sales in the US, then Sony must have done gangbusters in December, because we know that November was not a good year-over-year month for the PS3. NPD's December data, which should be out in the coming weeks, will give a clearer picture of how the PS3 did during the holiday season.

IT WENT UP 130%! (but we're still miles behind everyone else in sales) HUH? WHO SAID THAT?!
Levi @ Jan 6th 2009 10:35AM
Could it be that Joystiq is just plying with the readers at this point? Nega-posts on the PS3 one week, posotives the next... They are just laughing, betting on comment stats. "Hey guys, I got $20 this one's gonna bring in 300 comments!"
Solomon73 @ Jan 6th 2009 10:41AM
it's not about the news. It's about generating revenue through add sales and our hits.
that's all nothing else.
and look im playing along!!!!
silverwolf761 @ Jan 6th 2009 10:47AM
"it's not about the news. It's about generating revenue through add sales and our hits."
Exactly right. Controversial posts (especially about PS3) bring out all the jerks from both sides, and there are plenty of comments (and therefor, ad views) that make them money. It is in their best interests to be as vitriolic and partisan as possible.
NaeemTHM @ Jan 6th 2009 10:48AM
OR! They're just reporting the fucking news.
You know...not everything involves shenanigans.
Erluti @ Jan 6th 2009 10:51AM
Well, they certainly do bring out a lot of people who comment on how there will be a lot of comments.
*=Lord Negatron of the XBots=* @ Jan 6th 2009 11:00AM
Joystiq does as they are told. Now quit your inquisitive babble as you might ruin "the plans".
GUAARDS!!!!
:)
Jakka ( The Order of Haters of Balance) @ Jan 6th 2009 11:17AM
You do realise that's the entire premise behind 'Japanese Hardware Sales'?
eNrique @ Jan 6th 2009 1:41PM
Hey Levi, _I've been reading only nega-posts about the Ps3 for the last 15 days on joystiq (especially last week), Can you tell me how this post is positive, you know judging from the pic I sense some sign of incredibility/sarcasm
arrrgh @ Jan 6th 2009 3:57PM
there is sarcasm because the trends seem to indicate ps3 falling short of expectations this christmas
so they're probably confused as to where the 130% increase came from
SimbaDogg @ Jan 7th 2009 1:35AM
seriously...joystiq, i'm not sure about anyone else, but i'm seriously getting so damn sick about this "ps3 is behind, its behind, its behind and not catching up" articles. jesus h christ. did anyone expect a console that was A) more than double the price B) a year behind to catch up w/ sales over nite...or even within 2 years? I mean jesus h christ, just let the game be played. i dont think we need second by second play by play during a marathon. sorry for all the jesus h christs but...jesus h christ.
Eric @ Jan 6th 2009 10:37AM
O RLY?
(sorry, had to.. with the image and all)
Zertoss @ Jan 6th 2009 10:39AM
The meme you're looking for is "I see what you did there".
James Birvingstone @ Jan 6th 2009 11:27AM
Memes are the cancer of the internet.
Archon @ Jan 6th 2009 11:32AM
Cancer is a meme of the world.
arrrgh @ Jan 6th 2009 3:59PM
the world is a meme of the universe?
Hyams @ Jan 6th 2009 4:32PM
The word 'meme' is a meme.
samfish @ Jan 6th 2009 10:38AM
Well, White Knight Chronicles was a big hit in Japan last week, apparently. I'm sure that had something to do with fuzzy mathematical computations.
Dante G @ Jan 6th 2009 10:43AM
Another flame war?
Well, at least the comments will be entertaining.
ScottG13 @ Jan 6th 2009 10:46AM
MGS4 and GTA4 were HUGE PS2 franchises that helped move PS3 hardware in 2008. Are there titles that will do the same in 2009? Can Killzone/Uncharted continue the momentum?
*=Lord Negatron of the XBots=* @ Jan 6th 2009 10:57AM
Uncharted 2 has SNOW! Of course it/they can.
Hyams @ Jan 6th 2009 11:04AM
Maybe?
GT5, if it drops in 09, will help a lot. It's the best selling videogame franchis- ... second best se- ... third be-?
... it's a really well selling videogame franchise. Let's just leave it at that.
ScottG13 @ Jan 6th 2009 11:12AM
Interesting point on GT5. I couldn't care less about a realistic driving game. Does GT still have that cache? Or have racing fans moved on to Forza? Burnout Paradise is the balls, though.
SoCoolCurt (PSN: KillaKornbread - XBL: SoCoolCurt) @ Jan 6th 2009 11:14AM
Hyams
i think the stat you are refering to is that it's SONY's best selling franchise of all time. it's nowhere near the best selling franchise though. im sure you saw the Wii Fit article the other day. either way, when it drops, it will sell like hotcakes as usual. just look at Prologue sales for any indication.
F1 @ Jan 6th 2009 10:46AM
Huh... was 10 now 13...
Sorry. Just had to get things started :)
Draco @ Jan 6th 2009 11:01AM
it's not that unreasonable, last year there weren't enough machines, the 80's were non-existant at the stores and only the 20's were there... who would buy a machine with 20gb?
This year there were lots of 80's floating around. (although different version)
jarhead906 @ Jan 6th 2009 11:02AM
Oh you.
Ben C @ Jan 6th 2009 11:16AM
Look, I don't really care about games or PS3 sales or... anything, but somebody deserves an award for "most appropriate pairing of image with content on the web ever."
Hyams @ Jan 6th 2009 11:06AM
Stop your trolling!
You know very well that actually sold *55* last month.
Superstar90 @ Jan 6th 2009 11:08AM
LOL! I love percentages.
So full of sp(w)in
gravewolf @ Jan 6th 2009 11:10AM
Actually the increase accounted for worldwide sales and not just NA.
Jakka ( The Order of Haters of Balance) @ Jan 6th 2009 11:15AM
Nah...all these flamewars are really boring.
I'm sticking it to the PS3 now.Last night I was visited by the three ghosts of gaming...and the last one has shown me the future with MS in control of all gaming...and it sucks.
GiggMan @ Jan 6th 2009 11:16AM
There must not have been enough negative post in the last pro Sony article. I guess it never hurts to try again though.
atrimus @ Jan 6th 2009 12:19PM
what's so absurdly partisan about all this is how, just an article or two later, Microsoft makes its sales announcements and joystiq takes it as gospel.
cuso26 @ Jan 6th 2009 12:37PM
That's not absurd, it's reality. MS doesn't have to spin, it's honest to goodness truthful good news. Sony otoh, has to *make* it look good.
It's not rocket science, and I'm a PS3 owner and have no 360.
The funny part about all this is the kids that will rate the anti-PS3 comments up and the pro-360 comments up are the same kids that go around blasting Vista and any MS production because of the "OMG UBUNTU LINUX!!!11!!1!!" bandwagon. Mob mentality, gotta love it :)
Lee @ Jan 6th 2009 11:20AM
Sony's sales up 130%
Is that possible?
Short answer: No
Long answer: No, Sir.
Hyams @ Jan 6th 2009 11:26AM
No, it seems quite possible. Sales during December will naturally be much higher than sales during Novemeber, because of this little thing call 'Christmas'. =)
Besides, they can't just lie about these sort of things. That'd get them in trouble with their stockholders.
TracerBullet @ Jan 6th 2009 11:46AM
The nunber can also mean what Sony delievered to stores, doesn`t matter if customers purchased those or if they ramain in the shelfs. You know the sayings:
1 - "There`s lies, damn lies and statistics"
2 - "An statistic is like a bikini: shows everything but what matters".
gravewolf @ Jan 6th 2009 12:19PM
Globally is a high probability seeing almost non existant 360 support on other countries. So the only choices they have are either the wii, ds, psp, ps2 and ps3. My country doesnt support any warranties on the 360 so most gameshops here dont really sell them cause a lot of the first gen 360's came back and the shops couldnt replace them.
Iridium @ Jan 6th 2009 12:39PM
I don't think you really want to count consoles shipped to stores. Microsoft shipped far more consoles to stores that couldn't be sold than Sony.
Still is the case.
Jack Tretton @ Jan 6th 2009 11:22AM
Perfect marriage of headline and meme. Bravo.
Lee @ Jan 6th 2009 11:23AM
Nintendo in charge - casual city
Sony in charge - charging your wallet for breathing
Microsoft in charge - DRM lockdown, crashing on the edge of Y2K8.
Sam @ Jan 6th 2009 11:26AM
Something looks awful familiar about that guy...
xFenixKnightx (In Memory of Benjamin Carmine RIP) @ Jan 6th 2009 11:35AM
LMFAO!!! Sorry, it just caught me off gaurd.
+1 for you!
And +1000 to Sliwinski for the pic. :) Just awesome!
Cellien @ Jan 6th 2009 11:29AM
Exactly. This is one heck of a whirlwind generated by the spin-zone.
oolz @ Jan 6th 2009 11:48AM
jakka: If they do in the future what they've done up to this point, you'd be fool to say it sucks. They've done more to move console gaming forward, with online functionality and quality development tools, than Nintendo or Sony has in a the last two generations combined. If they improve in the next generation on the same level they did from Xbox to Xbox 360, console gaming is in good hands.
C.A. @ Jan 6th 2009 11:54AM
I just picked my PS3 up last Friday. So far it's pretty cool.
Duke @ Jan 6th 2009 12:13PM
You 130 percenter you!
C.A. @ Jan 6th 2009 6:25PM
Like some sort of new motorcycle gang! Now I need a tatoo.
Jakka ( The Order of Haters of Balance) @ Jan 6th 2009 12:59PM
Yes, but as much as I love to hate on Sony, their failure would give a monopoly to Microsoft. And Microsoft being in control of the entire hardcore audience could then get away with anything.
Red Rings? This is nothing compared to the kind of shit that would've been going on if MS was the only kid on the street.
Sony and MS are essentialy Ying and Yang, keeping each other in check.
