These are the times when corporate bull needs to fall away and they need to explain to the fans just What they actually did "Try" to "save" 1Up...

Because to the outside it looks like they came in and cut the "free" content that doesn't directly generate revenue.

Which is not "trying to save" anything but money. It's saving some cash while harming the Community... and without the Community sites like 1Up, and Joystiq, and GiantBomb, are worthless.

Podcasts keep the Community engaged... gutting the Podcasts = gutting the community, which in turn, guts your site's value. This isn't rocket science, you can't sell product to people who think you're evil.

He's just trying to save the business (not that I blame him, in his position what else can he do?). Perhaps UGO are not to blame as much as the suits at Ziff who ran 1up into the ground. But if they were good guys why did 30 employees get fired with no warning and get escorted from the building by security guards?

UGO wouldn't know what to do with the talent they were handed anyway so perhaps it's for the best. I am still holding out hope that the crew lands on their feet and stay together.

Welcome to corporate business! All these problems arise when it all turns specifically into a business that is big like this. The sad reality is that I don't think anything could have stopped this, as much as any of us would have like to have seen.

Joystiq, this is your chance, while everyone else is mourning, you hire all the good people.

If 1up wasn't making money, it wasn't making money. Too much overhead? Too much staff? Too much coverage? I don't know but their content was top notch and traffic was quite strong. If they couldn't monetize that effectively, its simply too bad.

As a former Ziff Davis employee this breaks my heart and I wasn't happy about the decision when I heard it. That company is evolving tremendously after coming out of chapter 11. Also, I hope that UGO and Hearst will do a better job with it than Ziff did--but truthfully that will be hard to beat because I loved 1Up.

Sorry Sam, but I can't imagine you really agree with what you posted. I'm curious to see how 1UP many fans won't stick around because of this. Right now, I'm skeptical as I don't see how 1UP is going to recover.

The interesting thing is to note besides who was fired, was who wasn't fired. Besides Garnett who has had basically every job at the company, those who survived were the previews and features teams. The entire reviews staff, audio/video people and EGM folks were let go. So I'm not really sure what's going to happen to 1up, but I'm particularly worried about UGO bringing in their own review teams.

Garnett is still on board? I hope he jumps ship as well. I liked him, but I don't think he's going to be able to put together any sort of decent podcasts without the core.

If John Davison is smart, he'll take a sabatical from WhatTheyPlay and start up a mini 1up, with the podcast and review crews from 1up. This business could easily could overtake 1up in less than a year, especially if they added some sort of subscription component for users to help support the site.

Kennedy, 2/3rds of your staff have been fired, including most of the useful critical voices in the industry. The podcasts and video show have been killed, and that was your best content. You presided over the death of all four of the magazines that you started with.

I would say that's a pretty big fucking bucket of fail. Maybe you and Bush should be kickin' it with some brewskis down in Tejas.

That's just it, we all assume that 1up was making revenue, I think the real question here, is how much was 1up worth in real dollars? And is it the gaming fans overestimating how well 1up was doing?

I liked FireFly as much as anybody, but no matter how good the show was, no one watched, we might be a vocal community of fans, but the fact remains, no one watched it.

You can't save a company by throwing out most of the employees and ending elements about it that people loved.

1up is now just UGO. They haven't saved anything.

By the way, I there is a facebook group for "former 1Up" fans. It has 166 members after just a few hours. I will be posting news on where the crew ends up, and they may update there as well.

Sorry, you dont stop someone's brain from bleeding by cutting off their face.

And if you didn't get the metaphor: Ziff Davis was losing money (brain bleeding), so they sold 1UP to UGO, who proceeded to fire everyone who's opinion I actually care about (cutting of their face)

That was a terrible metaphor but I agree with your intent. Carry on.

this is more like Ford Motor selling Jaguar and Landrover for a cash infusion even though those are both good brands that produce good product.

Difference being the company that bought Jag and Landrover wanted to continue making the same cars to broaden their lineup... they didn't gut the lineup and slap the Jag and landrover logos on their shitty econoboxes.
