Best of the Rest: Chris' Picks of 2008

It's almost a no-brainer if you know me: Take the Penny Arcade "universe," send it back in time, turn it into an episodic video game – blending old-school adventure and Final Fantasy-style turn-based RPG mechanics – and then have PA's Jerry Holkins (aka Tycho) handle the writing while adventure-game legend Ron Gilbert pitches in with design. Oh, and then release it on every platform under the sun, including Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, Xbox Live Arcade, and PSN. Perfection.
Oh, and the first installment was really great (I'm still working through Episode 2).

It's God of War, but portable. So what? With Chains of Olympus, Ready at Dawn has proven, once again, that not only are they one of the few developers consistently turning out worthwhile PSP games, but they're capable of making that portable platform sing. Let's hope they really do reconsider PSP development.

This is the only DS game on my list and, to be honest, I haven't even finished it yet. But that's okay, because I still want to recognize the creativity and quality of The World Ends With You. In 2008, amidst an unprecedented flurry of re-releases, it's easy to forget that Square Enix was still producing fine, original content.

But Chris, BG&E came out half a decade ago in 2003! Yes, reader ... you're right (good memory!). But if Justin can pick a board game (those don't even plug in, mind you) then I can pick this famously overlooked gem. With Beyond Good & Evil 2 in production after, well ... a half-decade of groaning from the fan community (and a string of Rayman Raving Rabbids games we assume were designed by Michel Ancel as penance for poor sales of BG&E), I had to finally sit down and play the original. And what I found is one of the most charming, well-written, well-acted action-adventure games I've ever played; a Zelda game for those of you bored by the latest crop of Zelda games.

I don't mean to underestimate 2D Boy's accomplishment here in anyway, but World of Goo is the best Wii game released in 2008. I say that having played mostly the Mac version, and having chosen Goo as the top IGF game last year – but in a year that didn't offer much for the "core gamer" on the Wii, World of Goo emerged as a robust, impeccably produced, and immediately accessible game and it did so on the Wii's mostly overlooked (for good reason!) WiiWare service. Bravo!

Sure it's not a game, but it does run on my GameBox 380, and that's good enough for me. When thinking about gaming "gateway drugs" – those seemingly innocuous introductions – we're often reminded of Wii Sports or the like. Well, you can add Netflix to that list. If my XBL friends list is any indication, Netflix is now the most popular application on the entire console, game or not – and if my personal, anecdotal experience is any indication, that's not just 1337 g4m3rz watching "All Dogs Go To Heaven." That's a family movie, friends.

- Star Wars: The Force Unleashed: After being wowed by the tech demos – and excited by the prospect of a newly energized LucasArts, once again focused on creating best-in-class video games in-house – this sloppy action game epitomized disappointment.
- Castle Crashers: One of my most anticipated titles of the year – purchased immediately on launch day – has gone almost entirely unplayed because of a broken multiplayer component that took four months to fix. I'm eager to finally play it with friends, but it's 2009 now. So, Castle Crashers makes my list of '08 disappointments.
- Resistance 2: As someone who was grossly underwhelmed by Resistance 1, I had hoped Resistance 2 represented a far more mature sophomore effort from the FPS-newcomers at Insomniac. There are some interesting things going on in multiplayer and co-op, but the campaign is a snoozer.
- Metal Gear Online: Metal Gear Solid 4 was one of my top picks of the year – and Metal Gear Online is not only comically overvalued (you were not going to sell this separetely in the US, Konami!) but the laughably cumbersome Konami ID system serves as a pointed reminder that many Japanese developers really have no idea how to make a successful multiplayer game.
- Mass Effect DLC: I wasn't disappointed in "Bring Down The Sky," the first (and only!) piece of Mass Effect DLC released to date. I am, however, disappointed in the lack of subsequent packs and BioWare's absolute silence on the matter. What's the deal, BioWare?

About time you effing emm effer!
I was also disappointed by the Mass Effect DLC offerings.
THAT GAME WAS MADE FOR DLC!
I think Bioware missed out on a gold mine
The Dark Wayne @ Jan 7th 2009 9:36PM
OXM just had a 100 list of things that matter to the xbox in 09, and they said Bioware's Dr. Ray muzuka or the other head guy said there'd be more than Bring Down the Sky
Markez (Anti-Panda Death Murder Squadron) @ Jan 8th 2009 1:31AM
The lack of more ME DLC is absolutely criminal. It was bad enough that Bring Down the Sky came soooooo long after myself and just about everyone else had already finished it, but at this point I'd be more likely to buy the GTAIV DLC, and wait for ME2, than buy any DLC for it at this point.
JoeTheBlow @ Jan 8th 2009 4:16AM
Gold mine?
Its pretty obvious that it didn't sell, and so completely obliterating ANY point of spending the money to make more.
Sorry, but theres no conspiracy here, just business.
PSN: HinchyFC @ Jan 7th 2009 9:05PM
Beyond Good and Evil? Awwwwww yeah.
zkey14 @ Jan 7th 2009 9:08PM
Penny Arcade Adventures- a no-brainer? Am I missing something here?
Moorio - XBL: peacebyanymeans @ Jan 7th 2009 9:11PM
The part where it's a good game?
Trickob @ Jan 7th 2009 10:04PM
no, the part where you both SHUT THE HELL UP!
sorry, uncalled for... but still!
whymog @ Jan 7th 2009 10:38PM
You're missing something.
Christopher Grant @ Jan 8th 2009 12:01PM
From my point of view: definitely missing something. :-D
Deck @ Jan 7th 2009 9:13PM
Nicely said. Glad someone else really enjoyed PA:OtRSPoD
The lack of Mass Effect DLC irked me too. Especially since they said they were going to be providing numerous contents packages. I have no idea how many the once piece of DLC sold.. but being a Mass Effect fan, I know I bought it right away. The actual DLC was of great quality... but the fact that they didn't continue like they said.. yeah that is bad.
mr mobius @ Jan 7th 2009 9:16PM
Took your time.
I agree whole-heartedly about Word of Goo.
Mr Khan @ Jan 7th 2009 9:17PM
WiiWare's overlooked for good reason? I think that service has had a considerable amount of worthwhile games considering it's only 8 months old
Feh.
Mr Khan @ Jan 7th 2009 9:21PM
Ah, and i believe Raving Rabbids is the reason why we're seeing a sequel to BG&E, despite the incredible sales flop that the original was, as it's been given to Ancel because his desire to make a true Rayman successor was turned into a series of marginally-related party games
Jerk Face @ Jan 7th 2009 9:56PM
Have fun building sand castles.
Mr Khan @ Jan 7th 2009 10:34PM
And have fun driving your Toyota Yaris, sir.
Markez (Anti-Panda Death Murder Squadron) @ Jan 8th 2009 1:36AM
Guess it depends on what you're after. Sure, there's a handful of solid titles on it. But by and large, it's a lot of so-so stuff. Over the 2 weeks I was back in my hometown over the holidays, I spent some good time at a budddy's house with a bunch of friends and had a blast about with the bag toss game (I know, I know) and a few of the brain-teaser and quiz show games. On their own, or playing solo, those games wouldn't be too much fun.
Kind of understand what Chris is saying, but at the same time anyone expecting it to be a bastion of awesome, unique or independent games is way off base and should adjust expectations accordingly.
DJSteel @ Jan 7th 2009 9:18PM
Chris..I think you are a cool guy..but seriously??? Penny Arcade over PixelJunk Monsters, Eden, and Geo Wars 2.. and with the money you've spent on the overpriced 'episodic' content, you could buy and enjoy all three and still have enough left over for a dollar menu lunch..
MowDownJoe @ Jan 7th 2009 9:25PM
It took him months of pestering on the podcast to get him to play GeoWars 2... The pestering probably put a sour taste in his mouth. Though the two Penny Arcade games are pretty good.
DJSteel @ Jan 7th 2009 9:34PM
I'm definitely not saying they are bad... but they are way overpriced..
Moptimus Slime (Leader of the Ryan Scott Defense Force, in honor of the Jan. 6 Massacre) @ Jan 7th 2009 9:35PM
uh, SBCG4AP much?
WRE @ Jan 8th 2009 1:38AM
Wait. What kind of lunch we talking here?
Christopher Grant @ Jan 8th 2009 12:05PM
I don't get the "overpriced" argument. $15 for a roughly 8-10 hour experience. Four episodes total. That's $60 for a 30 to 40 hour game. How is that overpriced at all? I just paid $60 for Gears 2, which is an 8 hour game, with some busted multiplayer. Still a great game.
Something's wrong when everyone is getting caught up on whether it was $20 at launch versus $15 now, and how much that $5 is worth. $5 is how much a coffee at Starbucks costs – it's irrelevant. The same argument was levied at Braid – "$15 is too much!"
While everyone is still paying $60 or more for new games, there are dozens of great sub-$20 games being released every year. Some of those (like PAA) give you really robust and nearly feature-length experiences for a fraction of the price of a retail game, and we're still complaining about that $5 (which, btw, is about how much I spent on TAX on Gears 2).
DJSteel @ Jan 8th 2009 1:15PM
the first episode is 20 buck. So the final price is 65, if the rest of the pieces are indeed 15 bucks a piece. I'm not against the game, from what I played in the demo, it was decent. Is it worth 65 dollars for a DRM'ed game that won't play if you can't get online?
DJSteel @ Jan 7th 2009 9:19PM
I also believe that the DLC thing was disappointing as well GTA and Fable announced DLC content and we are still waiting.
Arlen @ Jan 7th 2009 9:33PM
I fully support the choice of Penny Arcade Adventures and am very glad to see it on someone's list. Both episodes so far are fun, genuinely funny games that deftly mix the best of Lucas Arts-style adventure games and traditional Japanese RPGs.
Dr Jeckyl and Mr ESC. @ Jan 7th 2009 9:39PM
"traditional Japanese RPGs".
You mean the traditional Dungeons and Dragons system. Most Rpgs including Jrpgs are based on the D&D system.
Christopher Grant @ Jan 8th 2009 12:06PM
I think he means the general gameplay mechanic.
Dr Jeckyl and Mr ESC. @ Jan 7th 2009 9:36PM
I remember when I first played the Star Wars: The Force Unleashed demo,it was a blast but then after I tried to describe the experience is when I realized that it was nothing new.
Is like God of War but with Bioshock Telekinesis.
The Dark Wayne @ Jan 7th 2009 9:38PM
why did you choose bioshock for a telekinesis reference? That was such a small part of the game and there are plenty games with much more emphasis on telekinesis, like other Star Wars games
Dr Jeckyl and Mr ESC. @ Jan 7th 2009 9:40PM
I was also trying to include other examples like HL gravity gun when the browser crashed.
Jerk Face @ Jan 7th 2009 9:53PM
Its like God of War but with Bioshock Telekinesis, only way shittier.
Fixed! : )
Dr Jeckyl and Mr ESC. @ Jan 7th 2009 10:02PM
To be honest I thought the demo was pretty good and I would probably play it someday maybe during the usual drought but I must say everything related to star wars that I have ever bought turns out to be crap.
The reason why I didn’t buy it back in the day was because the game was launched here at a whopping 90$ (Just like Sonic, Mirrors Edge and Naruto the Broken Bond) and the reviews were really negative.
I plan to play the games above when they reach the 50$ price.
The Dark Wayne @ Jan 7th 2009 9:37PM
I half expected you to put Quantum of Solace on there Chris
Ficken @ Jan 7th 2009 9:40PM
I'm not angry... I'm just disapointed. That hurts so much more.
Dr Jeckyl and Mr ESC. @ Jan 7th 2009 9:45PM
My choose for biggest disappointment goes to Fable II (With Gears of War 2 in 2nd place)
The first two parts of the game convinced me of placing Fable 2 in my list of epic rpgs even with the limited choices but then the 3rd quest is awfully short and ending well the credits last longer than the final part of the game.
Premature ejaculation man @ Jan 7th 2009 9:49PM
Mass Effect DLC would be great. I have points just itching to be spent on something good.
That, or show off Mass Effect 2 already! I'm impatient!
Jerk Face @ Jan 7th 2009 9:56PM
I'd be stone cold shocked if we saw Mass Effect 2 before Dragon Age or even that (probably crappy) Old Republic MMO. Not that I'm not looking forward to the further adventures of Commander Shepard, because I am. But BioWare just has a lot of stuff they're working on at the moment.
Ian @ Jan 7th 2009 9:55PM
Completely agree with you on BG&E... and good on you.
Completely disagree with you on MGO... what the "f" are you smoking? Sure, the konami ID thing sucked, but the game itself is rich and very deep.
Dr Jeckyl and Mr ESC. @ Jan 7th 2009 10:07PM
You know I want to play MGO if it wasn't because my connection sucks also because online games after a while are quite difficult to get into (Not to mention frustrating)
But the thing that holds me back the most is that if I want to keep up with everyone else I'll need the expansions. There should be a Diamond or Gold edition with the expansions.
Is really hard to get into MGO? Also that I want to play Confrontation when I get a better connection.
Ian @ Jan 7th 2009 10:28PM
Q: Is really hard to get into MGO?
Yes and no. The learning curve can be difficult for first time players, especially for players unfamiliar with the MGS series. With all that said, the game has a wonderful student/instructor system where rookies are taught by veterans of the game. The training session bares no effect on your overall stats, as the time spent in training mode is for the player to learn with fear of wrecking your stats. During training the trainer is a ghost spectator able to run around the map to watch as battles unfold and observe player skill and conduct. Upon graduation of the training session, the instructor graduates players he feels are up to par, and in turn those graduating players will then earn the title of instructor.
It's all pretty cool, but it has pitfalls. Some classes aren't very serious, while others advertise easy graduations and will graduate anyone. For the most part though, training lobbies are a pretty good way to "git gud" if you're new.
My clan and I host some serious training kernels fairly often. If you (or anyone) are still interested, my PSN is Othello500. Add me and we'll talk some more about it.
Q: .... Also that I want to play Confrontation when I get a better connection.
A: Not sure what you're trying to ask, but I've played this latest SOCOM and it's ok. Initially, the game was pretty broken, but a series of patches have made it better. I'm waiting for the latest patch, v 1.30, which, coincidentally, drops this week or next, before I put some serious time into it.
BTW, my connection is cable, and I'm fine.
Hope this helped!
Dr Jeckyl and Mr ESC. @ Jan 7th 2009 10:49PM
Thanks.
Trickob @ Jan 7th 2009 10:10PM
Huzzah for Netflix on 360 indeed!! That's part of what helped convince my wife to get me a 360 for Christmas!
BTW, your Q looks frighteningly similar to ours...
Gun Barrier @ Jan 7th 2009 10:17PM
where did u buy a Gamebox 380?!?! I've been looking for those everywhere!
Markez (Anti-Panda Death Murder Squadron) @ Jan 8th 2009 1:41AM
I'm gonna wait to pick up a Gamebox 380 until either a sweet bundle or the new chipset comes out. I mean I like the 7 year warranty and all, but I'll still be damned if I'm gonna pick something up if I can expect it to give me the 5 ovals of death within a year.
Gun Barrier @ Jan 8th 2009 1:44AM
well at least the gamebox 380 is popular! I spent $300 on a gamecast that became unsupported a year later.
Veko @ Jan 8th 2009 9:55AM
Don't waste your time on the 380, no one makes games for it. Netflix is pretty neat, though.
Crusty Magic @ Jan 7th 2009 10:23PM
Totally agree on the Mass Effect DLC.
Wish Bioware would have released more stuff for it =/
SecretAgentHam @ Jan 7th 2009 10:24PM
you missed nintendo for your "disappointment list"
=)
WRE @ Jan 8th 2009 1:41AM
Get it? Because Nintendo sucks, right?
