The most shovelwary games seem to be the cash-ins in general.

Elf Bowling and Deal or no Deal are both pretty known, and probably just tried to grab the money from the people who knew the original Flash Game and watched the original TV show.

It also applies to The Grinch. I suggest it for the next BTS. Awful, awful game.

Ooh, excellent point: profits vs quality. I should have put that on the list. Oh well, I guess it'll have to wait until 2010. :P

And I'll check out the grinch. I was debating on which to do for the Christmas-themed BTS, but went with Elf Bowling just because I was curious if they could honestly make a game based off of that. The answer? No, they couldn't.

Thanks for your comment. :)

Clubhouse games and Metal Slug 7 are great games.

How many good card based games are there? (none)
How many good 2D shooters are there? (Contra 4)

I agree with the other games but these two are keepers.

Hey APHughes, I should clarify: not all games are considered shovelware. I use them for various examples when examining the traits of shovelware. Check out their articles and you'll see what I mean.

Thanks for writing! :)

Well, kinda OT, kinda not - 2008 only saw one game for me - Chrono Trigger. There was absolutley nothing else that caught my eye. I fear 2009 will be more of the same for me.

The junk games are really cluttering up the DS game section everywhere nowadays - turns me off from looking and gives my PSP more playtime.

I do have to say - RE:DS....love it. Although I've neve rplayed rebirth mode, only classic - about 5 times.

Moving forward on the DS...man....I'm starting to think mine is going to be doing alot of sitting around....taking breaks. Knowing that - I've been taking my sweet time on playing Chrono Trigger.

You're right, Nook: My DS used to follow me around constantly, as there was always a handful of games I was dying to play. It had been that way basically since I first got it. But recently it has been a little quieter. The last game that really sucked me in was Castlevania: OoE.

Hopefully, we start getting some quality releases soon. I'm really looking forward to Scribblenauts. And as a nerd, I'm obligated to look into The Lord of the Rings: Conquest for the DS. I haven't heard much of anything about it, which is somewhat troubling. But once DSiWare comes out, I'm hoping we get some quality and/or unique titles.

After reading some of the Q1 releases it seems that you're going to have lots of work the next months.

I hope you continue doing this section, it's always fun to read it.

Seeing as it's only January 7th, how is it that the writer doesn't "like [2009] one bit"? Hopefully that's not some annoying diss about the easiest target to diss this new year... As far as games, it's only January. Things always move a little slow this month but they always pick up! Sheesh!

Ohh, no hidden disses in there. It was actually unrelated to gaming ... it was just a small mix of a few negative personal matters and general facetiousness for (somewhat) comedic effect. Sorry for the confusion.

Thanks for writing, E! :)
