To me this was the DS year. It was the platform that I've spent more hours using. :)
The best game is hard to tell, but I am a long time fan of Final Fantasy. So Final Fantasy IV it is. :)

I actually bought the Japanese version of TWEWY, which was released the previous summer, so I can't call it my 2008 GOTY. :(

My GOTY would have to be Professor Layton.

Phantasy Star Zero isn't on your list. Not sure if it's "GOTY" but it's up there. (One of the few 3D games that is also pretty.)

Professor Layton hands down. I can't recommend this game enough. (Maybe it's because it's the end of the year and I've been doing a lot of these posts!)

The World Ends with You was definitely the best imo.

Professor Layton. Tons of charm and character, and nothing else kept me as constantly entertained.

Professor Layton 1 hands down.
I thought there would never be a game as atticiting as Phoenix Wright or Hotel Dusk Room 215.

I can say that this year is probably the least I've used my DS since the early launch period, and that's because there were so few options.

Though I have been using it faithfully as my alarm clock for quite some time though.

There was a whole lot of good last year, but TWEWY immediately springs to mind as my favorite.

Bangai-O, Trauma Center 2, Lock's Quest, Prof. Layton, Dragon Quest, Chrono Trigger, and the FF games were all good.

It was a good year for an RPG fan, anyway.

That must be TWEWY.

Other "nominees" are:
Bangai-O Spirits, Izuna 2, Castlevania, Prof. Layton

Blazer Drive, Blazer Drive, Blazer Drive. It came out of nowhere and satisfied my thirst for a card game after SNK vs Capcom bombed.

For US releases, the World Ends With You. Anyone who hasn't played it should pick up a copy or borrow it from a friend!

For those with a short term memory, remember that Shiren the Wanderer was also released this year. It really opened my mind to rogue-likes.

Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia, just ahead of Professor Layton. Final Fantasy IV DS, Disgaea DS would get consideration, but I haven't played either of them substantially. TWEWY I haven't started either.

Either TWEWY or Castlevania: OoE. Does anyone else feel like this was the last DS Castlevania? I remember after I beat PoR, I immediately began waiting for and expecting an announcement for a new DS Castlevania. (maybe because there were 3 on the GBA so I just figured there'd be 3 on the DS) But this time, as much as I'd like another one, I just don't think it's going to happen even though the DSi is here to expand the DS life cycle even further.

Hmmm this is tough... I'm torn between Layton, TWEWY, and Apollo Justice...

*sigh*

TWEWY. I've logged 60+ hours and can't get enough.

Then Layton, then Apollo.

The World Ends With You
Castlevania OOE
Soma Bringer.

Those 3 are definitely my tops.

If FFTA2 only had a better story though. Ah well.

My vote goes for Professor Layton.

However, I have not yet played TWEWY, which I have heard is very good. It is second on my to-buy list, right after Okami.

My personal favorites in 2008 were Etrian Odyssey II, Disgaea DS, Soul Bubbles, and NEVES (yes, NEVES! was it from 2008, though?)...

I did play The World Ends With You for a while, and strangely enough, I was NOT impressed! I guess I'm more of a turn-based guy.

But it is too soon to tell: I still have to go through a bunch of games I got this year and haven't been able to dig into. 2009 is going to be the year of 2008 DS games for me...

R4 wasn't released this year, but in order to find out what games were, just open your microsd on your computer and click the 'Date Created' tab.
