Evolution and Sony Liverpool studios merging, combining resources

"Each studio has its own internal concepting group which will always be looking at new opportunities and new IPs," Denny told GI.biz, "and we'll continue to extend and innovate within our existing franchises as well." The move won't happen "overnight," but the synergy that would result is sure to be beneficial to off- and hovering-slightly-above-road racing fans. We only hope that the two studios don't fall into the same trap Team Joystiq does whenever united under one roof: hours upon hours wasted looking at funny cat videos.

Hours spent looking at comical cat videos are never "wasted" hours.

I sense a storm brewing :O The wipeout storm :O

Everything Sony said is just PR talk for, "We're low on money, and one dev team is cheaper to run than two."
Still, I'd love to see what they make. A Motorstorm in 1080p at 60FPS? A Wipeout with a good use of physics and vehicle damage?
Tez @ Jan 7th 2009 2:36PM
Fine by me. Maybe the Wipeout boys will teach the Motorstorm guys a thing or two about creating an actual sense of speed in their racing game.
Vidikron @ Jan 7th 2009 4:42PM
?
I've never had any issues with that in the Motorstorm games. They don't feel as fast as WipEout, but that's because the vehicles are going considerably slower.

I actually love the Motorstorm games. I also really like Wipeout but I always get Pwned because I can't stay on the damn track most of the time. Next to Midnight Club and GT:P Motorstorm Pacific Rift is my favorite driver this generation. I also have to give props to Burnout Paradise but it feels a little to aracde like when compared to Midnight Club.
Tez @ Jan 7th 2009 6:14PM
Don't get me wrong, Vidikron, I don't hate Motorstorm or anything. It just never feels like I'm moving very fast (it's much improved in Pacific Rift, though).
Vidikron @ Jan 7th 2009 7:19PM
I didn't think you were hating on the game or anything, I've just never really thought the game didn't have a sense of speed. At least I didn't feel it was missing to the point where I actually thought about it. Every game I can think of that involves a greater sensation of speed also involves much faster vehicles. But it should be noted that Motorstorm is pretty much the only off-road racing game I play.

They aren't making them into one Dev team, they are still going to be seperate developers, however they will work in the same building.
however it is for money saving purposes i suspect since its cheaper to rent one building than 2.

Another benefit will be that they are also now at each others disposal. They can assit with making games if need be in a good physical environment. It's also possible we see some collaborations between the two of them as next to Polyphony Digital they are all Sony has for first party driving games.
Hashbrown Hunter @ Jan 7th 2009 4:21PM
Hopefully these two will operate in the same way Insomniac does (a new game every year, switching between franchises).

I completely heard that scream in my head as soon as I saw the picture. I'm such a geek.

I wish the Wipeout team would use their graphics assets to make some kinda spiffy sci-fi vehicular action game. Maybe space combat, or just spiffy hovercar combat..
Like an Ace Combat but within the Wipeout universe.
Wipeout HD is just plain gorgeous.
