As you can see, 2008 was Microsoft Game Devision's first ever year making profit, and that profit was tiny compared to all the money they'd lost since 2002.

Amd even if you ignore the Xbox 1, Microsoft still lost around 3 billion in the 360's first two years (interstingly, the same ammount the PS3 has lost in its first two years as well).

But like I said, this is all irrelevant. Past losses don't really matter.

Duke,

They haven't turned a profit in that they haven't regained all the losses. It's like if later this year Ford began selling it's cars at a marginal gain instead of a loss. They wouldn't have turned a profit because of all the previous losses. I'm still not convinced MS is even turning a profit on each console sold but it's possible they are getting a small gain on the two higher tiered models. I doubt the Arcade makes them money.

MS is interesting because they are the only current hardware maker that doesn't have to turn a profit. They have so much money as a corporation they are merely trying to gain market share and establish themselves as a brand.

Another reason I am skeptical about their profitability is because they combined the entertainment (Zune) division and the x-box division together. It pads the stats in a manner of speaking and makes the x-box division appear more profitable than it really is.

Check out this site for some detailed information about Microsoft Corporation, Windows, unethical business practices, X-Box division, MS Shills and a whole slew of other issues devoted specifically to Microsoft from someone who has felt the wrath of their often times illegal and always unethical business practices.

Everything you see on that site is done with a critical eye and is all based in fact with references. It's not just FUD. If you really want to be taken for a loop do a search on that blog for "Astroturfing" & "Shills".

I think MS will also do it because they are not in the gaming business to make any money. They are simply in it to gain marketshare. Microsoft has been bleeding money left and right on the original X-Box and the 360 since it was introduced. I love all the fanboy kool-aid drinkers who think's they have turned a profit on the 360. LMFAO!!!! Even Steve Frickin Ballmer said the 360 is a "funny project" because it doesn't actually make a profit.

The difference between Sony and MS is Sony is the global leader in consumer electronics. They got hurt the worst from the global economic crisis. They have to run their Playstation Division like an actual business and not do rash price cuts simply to sell more consoles. MS on the other hand has a bottom less pitt of Windows money from their strong arm, illegal and unethical business practices over the last 10-15 years.

Before someone accuses me of this I never said that Sony or Nintendo where choir boys but the illegal behaviors are not even close. Also, the majority of MS inpropriaties are authentic and well documented. They actually have a company policy of illegal activities.

Remember when MS had anti-trust & monopoly charges coming from the United States Government? How did they get out of that? Oh yeah I remember - Bill gates said he would pull every single MS Windows Operating system because of his draconian EULA that allows removal of liscense for NO REASON AT ALL. In my opinion Microsoft is THE DEVIL!

I also saw this mentioned on CNN just before the new year, that Sony was dropping the price of the PS3 up to 35%, due to components and production getting cheaper. It wasn't on any game sites so I figured it was just some oddball report. Maybe it'll happen.

So it may not only be the Microsoft guy, there may be some truth there.

We easily forget that PS3 was catching up to 360 until the last price-cut. Microsoft is probably right, if only because Sony is moving towards profitability on the PS3, and will want to move quickly to prove the merit of the PlayStation division

Price parity would be a very good thing for Sony

But what they can't do is sacrafice longterm financial viability for a short term gain in marketshare. MS can throw billions away without sneezing but the other two can't and won't.

In a separate announcement, Sony says that "Within the next couple seconds the 360 and Microsoft will begin to Suck It."

Microsoft needs to get off their asses and build a $100 BD drive add-on for the 360. Surely this guy who's armchair quarterbacking Sony could be drawing some diagrams or something.

You're such a stupid fanboy, that's your kind of stupid. I see you praising the hell out of sony and bashing MS. Who cares already? I mean dude, if I didn't own a PS3/360 and PC, I would have missed out on so many great games and experiences.

I bought a wii, it was a waste of time. My wife had to have it, I wanted it too. I wanted to try out the controller, after 3-5 months the WII just sat there. It held no value at all, after I played some of the Resident Evil games from the cube era, I was done with it. The wii is a gimmick, sales don't mean crap.

Why don't sales always mean anything? The wii is a gimmick right now. Sure, they might be coming out with more games now, but most of the population that buys the wii is for the controller. They want to try out the controller and most of the people aren't true gamers.

I have 2 neighbors, aren't gamers and bought a wii. My sister and her boyfriend, never played games and bought a wii. ALL BOUGHT A WII, I saw them playing the wii sports and after a few weeks they sold it.

Not saying the wii is a bad system, but the 360/ps3 crush the wii imo. Hell, even for a casual gamer the 360/ps3 wins with a better selection of games to choose from and what the consoles can do.

I don't hate the wii, but to bring in the wii is stupid. The wii doesn't count because people aren't buying the wii, they're buying into the new technology to " Try it out ". I don't know one person that has their wii anymore, all the people that bought them sold them from " Barely gamers, casual gamers and hardcore gamers.

Also, stop with the hate on the 360. If MS wants to keep losing money and giving me great games, then let them be if I care. I'm glad sony has someone to compete with now. Now, the competition is better and both companies will do what ever it takes to win our business.

That's a beautiful thing. Who cares if one is cutting prices to sell more, I frankly don't care. I'm not an employee at SONY or MS, I won't lose any sleep over it. Enjoy the games, enjoy what 3 systems can do for you, if you don't like it then stop telling others are wrong for liking them.
