CoD 4: Over 10 million served, 2.8% survive 'Airplane' on veteran
Infinity Ward Community Manager Robert Bowling Fourzerotwo has released some player statisticalz from a little game called Call of Duty 4. The data, pulled on Jan. 3, reveals that 10 million unique users have played CoD 4 on Xbox 360 and connected to Live "at least once" after playing.
Going deeper down the fox hole (yes, it's called a mixed metaphor), Infinity Ward checked specific data on certain levels:
Going deeper down the fox hole (yes, it's called a mixed metaphor), Infinity Ward checked specific data on certain levels:
- 71.1%, or 7,111,508 people have completed F.N.G.
- 68.8%, or 6,886,509 people have completed Cargo Ship.
- 46.5%, or 5,654,643 people have beaten the game on any difficulty.
- 2.8%, or 283,632 people have completed Airplane on Veteran difficulty.
Comparatively, pulling the multiplayer numbers from PSN revealed 4,381,276 unique users. Now we just want to know how many tries it took that 2.8% to complete Airplane on Veteran.

Those are some really interesting statistics. Didn't even know they kept track of such things. Be nice if some other companies gave out statistics like that for some other games.
I never tried airplane on veteran..it was bad enough on regular.
Dirty @ Jan 8th 2009 11:30AM
Interesting side effect of cheevos.
Duke @ Jan 8th 2009 11:38AM
Oh it frustrated me right away on vet. I am not one of those 200k. :(
The Dark Wayne @ Jan 8th 2009 11:46AM
I am, but it cost me a couple of nights and a good deal of sanity
AwesomeTown @ Jan 8th 2009 11:53AM
Same here, Duke. After only a couple tries on the first level on veteran, I just got frustrated and moved on to another game.
Haggard @ Jan 8th 2009 12:14PM

"I am, but it cost me a couple of nights and a good deal of sanity".
For me it was a controller and a unhealthy dose of Rage but I got it.
Funny that achievement was impossible the first time I try to get it but after getting Portal Rocket Science achievement it was totally easy.

amart @ Jan 8th 2009 11:21AM
Just wondering why your calling "Mile High Club" 'airplane'...
and it took me about 2 solid hours of trying over and over (30-50 seconds per try). And then another 20 mins to do it again on my friends account. (on veteran of course)
amart @ Jan 8th 2009 11:22AM
hmm maybe mile high club is just the achievement name, oh well :P
toastix @ Jan 8th 2009 11:24AM
The level is the Epilogue but you are right the achievement is Mile High Club. The last one I got in that game with the intel. Mile High Club was much more fun to get.
WiredKnight @ Jan 8th 2009 2:03PM
Surely you must be joking.
amart @ Jan 8th 2009 2:05PM
wired knight: who's joking?
DBuck_Eye @ Jan 8th 2009 3:40PM
That's a fail amart. You should have said: "I'm not joking, and don't call me Shirley."
amart @ Jan 8th 2009 3:42PM
lol my bad, I'll remember that next time.
toastix @ Jan 8th 2009 11:21AM
Took me a good hour to do it on veteran.
Readme @ Jan 8th 2009 11:45AM
I am proud to be a part of that 2.8%. I went through periods of deep frustration and despondency, sure that I would never complete it. Very difficult mission, indeed.
xeleion @ Jan 8th 2009 12:50PM
You're better than me. I still can't get past the end of that sniper mission on Veteran. I can't snipe fast enough or put down enough claymores to survive the onslaught. ~__~
toastix @ Jan 8th 2009 1:02PM
The trick to the sniper level is to go stand by their spawn point on the right side of the level so they cant spawn. The side with the doors with the intel in it; then you just need to stay alive and wait for the choppa!
Strategy_Panda (The Sandwich Poisoning Crew) @ Jan 8th 2009 2:10PM
I ended up hiding in the ticket booth thingy on the left. It protects you from bullets and most grenades.
The Sniper mission is probably the hardest to finish on vet. difficulty.
jxcgunrunna @ Jan 8th 2009 11:24AM
Love this game. Its better than WaW IMO. I cant wait for IW's next game.
Godstine @ Jan 8th 2009 11:26AM
Still trying to do that level on hard, damnit.
Also, only 46% have beaten the game? You'd think it'd be higher.
The Dark Wayne @ Jan 8th 2009 11:50AM
that's a big part of why games are getting shorter and shorter. People are getting lazier and lazier. I remember one podcast where I think Justin said he doubted that 20 percent of the people who played GTA IV beat it.
Kodros @ Jan 8th 2009 2:08PM
It has nothing to do with being lazy. Most of us probably started playing video games when we were in school and are now doing the family thing. A good chunk of the player base just doesn't have time to put in 20+ hours to beat a game.
Godstine @ Jan 8th 2009 2:26PM
I always figured it had more to do with the single player versus multiplayer people. While I don't have a lot of time myself (them papers don't write themselves), I still make a commitment to finish any and every game that I've decided to own. Also, except for Team Fortress 2, I've yet to buy games solely for the online component.
marauder800 @ Jan 8th 2009 3:23PM
NOT playing a video game is laziness? That's a new one on me. I'll update my dictionary.
I don't like single player shooters, so I didn't play the COD4 campaign, but I've completed W@W in co-op mode. The "laziness" of sitting on my ass, controller in hand, in front of a TV had nothing to do with it.
*=Lord Negatron of the XBots=* @ Jan 8th 2009 3:40PM
Im with Kodros on that note. After work i am beat, so it depends on my mood as to what to play. It might be a shooter, it might be an MMO on the PC, or a movie before bedtime.
*Also, i didn't beat GTA4 yet with no reason particular. I will, one day, if im not going out to a bar etc..
RichChap @ Jan 8th 2009 11:29AM
2.8% surviving on airplane on veteran is actually higher than I would have thought. that's about 1 out of every 35 people who own the game.
Dralthi @ Jan 8th 2009 11:33AM
Mile High Club was really hard. I kept trying on and off for about 2 months before I finally got it. I'm actually shocked that only 2.8% have beaten that.
The Dark Wayne @ Jan 8th 2009 11:51AM
I'm not, that shit is unbelievably hard, easily one of the hardest things ive ever done in a game
baby sea tuna @ Jan 8th 2009 11:36AM
Haha, I was literally just talking to one of my coworkers about this. It's one of the few Achievements I still haven't gotten on this game. The others were the scavenger-hunt bullshit.
The Dark Wayne @ Jan 8th 2009 11:53AM
those were surprisingly difficult, the one on the second "All ghilled up" mission was behind doors that would only open under real specific criteria, on a certain difficulty, at a certain time, if you're at a certain location, all kinds of BS
StarCasm, formerly known as Rastafario, formerly known as HB96st @ Jan 8th 2009 11:35AM

I loved COD 2 and 4, with a 100% completion on both.
Infinity Ward is the Shit. Can't wait for 5.
xFenixKnightx (In Memory of Ben Carmine RIP) @ Jan 8th 2009 11:39AM
Nice, I got 100% completion on COD2, COD4 AND COD:WaW! Love these games.
Heart of Reich on Veteran (COD:WaW) is insanely difficult.
The Dark Wayne @ Jan 8th 2009 11:47AM
Uggh, awful memories. If the Germans had that many grenades in real life they would have won easily.
xFenixKnightx (In Memory of Ben Carmine RIP) @ Jan 8th 2009 12:16PM
lol!

LOL ;P
DrNicodemus @ Jan 8th 2009 11:36AM
Mile High Club was ridiculous. Took me playing the level on and off for a day or so to get through. I probably attempted it 50-75 times.
xFenixKnightx (In Memory of Ben Carmine RIP) @ Jan 8th 2009 11:37AM
2.8% member here! :)
Agreed that really WAS difficult, Dralthi. Took me about 3 hours of constant dying until I could recognize the exact position and pattern in which I needed to beat it.
The Dark Wayne @ Jan 8th 2009 11:48AM
I'm still not sure how I did it.
Cheesecake Jones @ Jan 8th 2009 11:40AM
Those numbers don't work, either the percentage or the number of people is wrong.
46.5% of 10,000,000 is 4,654,643.
Just saying...
Snake @ Jan 8th 2009 11:41AM
So they are spying on our game habits/sessions… Great! Gamming nowadays is turning into a stupid mixture of neediness and weird spying. Old games were pure fun, simple and original. Today games are a strange déjà vu best of made of things that “we” enjoy playing over and over. Well at least there’s some hope in real genius and inventive people like Ueda or Kojima, fuck this shitty sequels, is because of these crap that original stuff like Mirro’s Edge are public and critically rejected. Wake up “gamers”, because most of you are playing clone games and enjoying that twilight fact.
Cheesecake Jones @ Jan 8th 2009 11:45AM
I don't know what "Gamming" is, but it sure sounds dirty. Especially if it's a weird mix of "neediness" and "spying..."
I think my uncle got in trouble for "Gamming" outside someone's window when he was in middle school.
xFenixKnightx (In Memory of Ben Carmine RIP) @ Jan 8th 2009 11:46AM
Angry much? Let me guess...
You can't get the Mile High Ch33vo huh?
:P
Readme @ Jan 8th 2009 11:47AM
At least you can rest easy in the knowledge that you are among the enlightened ones.
MDRL @ Jan 8th 2009 12:59PM
Mirror's Edge was rejected because it sucked. Kojima has been making the same game over and over for about a decade.
You're a tinfoil retard.
Ryan @ Jan 8th 2009 11:42AM
It took me a month on and off of trying. I think I died the most from my stubbornness of not killing the first guy in the bathroom. I would always just run by him and duck into that little corner on the right.
ObiBen @ Jan 8th 2009 11:45AM
Proud to be part of that 2.8%. The most frustrating part was after trying 30 times to do it, finally making it to the end and shooting the hostage! Another 15 or so tries and I made sure not to shoot him.
baby sea tuna @ Jan 8th 2009 11:53AM
Haha, I did that same thing on Hardened. Man, I felt like such an asshole.
