For years (literally) Final Fantasy XIII has seemed like an ethereal, heavenly destination. Like the Golden Fleece or a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. Only recently, with actual in-game screenshots, does it feel like Final Fantasy XIII is actually a game. One for us mere mortals, not just reserved for the gods. The latest issue of Famitsu not only has more screenshots, but actually gives us some details about the combat system. Yes, actual gameplay stuff.
Random-battle haters will love the fact that, just like in FFXII, enemies will be visible on the world map and there will be no transitions into combat. The combat itself looks quite complicated. The familiar ATB (Active Time Battle) system seems to be present, but multiple actions can be chosen per turn, according to how many points each action has assigned to it. For example, Fire costs 1 point and Firaga costs 3. So far there appears to be a 3-point limit per turn. Hopefully this indicates a rich combo system, much like in White Knight Chronicles.
Enemy names and HP are visible during battle and there appear to be "chain" and "bonus" systems, though what exactly these do is still unknown. With a demo being released in Japan in three months, we should know more by then. Don't get too excited, though. You almost certainly won't get to play it in 2009.

i used to not mind random battles but after playing alot of games recently without them (Kingdom Hearts 1&2, Blue Dragon, Tales of Vesperia, FFXII), i gotta say i much prefer being able to avoid an enemy if i feel the need, or run to where there are alot of them for encounter links and such.
i know this probably isnt the place to talk about this, but i wish Pokemon would do away with random battles and do a 3D console version of their major RPG's. that would be awesome.

first lol
second random battles just add more suspense, and also its more that i want the turn based battle system of the single digit FF. and you can still run away from those battles.
Any pokemon (i think)are the best selling handheld game of all time. The top 10 has them in there twice i believe. they'd still do good on a console but don't ever expect the handhelds to stop.

Can't wait! one of the reasons why I bought a PS3!

I say all ps3 owners should boycott this game and send a message to other exclusives before they jump ship too.. Before everyone starts flaming and telling me how much it cost to develop games these days:
think of this, many developers are just out to make as much money as they possibly can. I say this because the ps3 has so much more potential than other formats (bluray's can hold 50GB) so why should we have to accept less outstanding games than our machine can handle just so the developer's can make a game they can sell on less powerful platforms.. I mean who's really hurting here.. That would be US...

You forgot that it doesn't matter if the game fulfills the space requirements and what not that the PS3 offers. All that really matters is that the game is good and if Square can pull off a good game while still making money then who cares? A site-wide boycott of a game isn't going to even make a dent in the profits this game is going to undoubtedly illicit.

I'm not hurting by anything else than the wait for this game. Don't worry so much.

All that space isn't really a big deal, so what you don't have to swap discs. Didn't bother me with FF7 back in the day.

sure go ahead and boycott the game, watch the next final fantasy after 13 will be exclusive to xbox 360 because that version will sell. geez, why boycott the game, its still on ps3, and square enix is still releasing final fantasy versus 13 exclusivly on ps3, so stop crying

Hopefully they got rid of them stupid Quickenings, I never new how to actually perform them properly and they just seemed like some lame Quicktime event system gone wrong. I never put any license points into developing Quickenings and found every battle can be won without using it.

i dont care that they jump ship as long as it dont effect the quality of the game. in this case i really think it will. just look at what happend to gtaIV and DMC4. i was really dissapointed with both of them. im not saying they were bad games but they could have been so much better.

My question...Why does every FF character have to look "beautiful".

Like they have AIDS, more like.
SHIT YEAH now I can ATTACK, FIRE 1 and possibly ITEM in one turn. Thanks, JRPG definition of innovation!

SquareEnix quide to creating video game characters:
Step 1: Draw an androgenous humanoid.
Step 2: Grossly misinterperate the term androgenous to mean effeminate.

i say that random battles should be back in becasuethen it added the feeling of adventure to a game becasue unexpected things could happen at any moment. plus if you wanna boycott it go ahead but dont drag true ff fans into hi argument because ths is an act of nature (FF was on the nintendo first you tool). and b up squeenix for wanting to make money by multiplatforming it just means i've got even more people to talk to about FF13

I for one am boycotting this game 2 get FFV13 which is gonna be much better because it is exclusive.

ITC: Numbnuts who thinks non-exclusive = crap.
Anyway, in reading about chains and combos, I thought of FFX-2. Looks like some of the more generally lauded aspects of that entry are being resussitated into a main-series entry (though I still feel weird that FFXII is a main-series-er, what with the Ivalicity and all).
[Still] holdin' out to know how similar the Seifer-lookalike is to, well, Seifer (esp. his KHII incarnation).

Well I `m all in for random encounters and optional turn based combat which is not to say that I did not like the solution they came up with in FF12 but being the old-school final fantasy fan starting with number II up to X it would be nice if Square went back to its roots and made a pure turn based random encounter game like the ones of old.
I dont remember any game of late on the Sony platform that had a ffX-ish kind turn based encounters which I really miss.
I hope that Square succeeds in creating a game for the PS3 as good like FFX was for the PS2.

Xenogears AP combo system returns? =P Nothing of this is new really. We all knew about no random encounters for like... ever. the chain and bonus systems should be obvious by now (helloooo, look at FFXI and XII).
FFXIII doesn't exist until I get to play it.

Perfect. No Random battles. I cannot stand them.
Posted: Jan 8th 2009 9:29PM (Unverified) said
I'm not so concerned about the random encounters, that kind of thing is neither here nor there for me. What I do wanna see back in FF is a bit more structure to the battles.
I prefer having three line up on one side with the enemy on the other. FFXII was just stupid terrain dodging that got really old, really fast and the battles looked ridiculous hit the enemy, hide behind a tree/rock, repeat until you win. I think Chrono trigger/cross had it right. Make it so you can see the enemy on the map but have it transtion into a proper battle screen.
I'm still gonna buy this game, and i'm probably gonna love it but that is just a small gripe.

Hopefully that's going on the Japanese PSN, cause then creating my JP account all that time ago will have been worth it. :D

Ugh... So the battle system is going to be like FF12? Why can't they go back to the battle system used in all the games 9 and under?
Posted: Jan 16th 2009 7:24AM (Unverified) said
It is not going to be random battle system anymore.. Sad but true. I will not buy the new final fantasy games becuase its livecombat. For people that "hate" random battle encouters, can quit and find another adventuregame.
One of the things i admire with the FF-series is the randombattlesystem and the tactics you have to build for yourself to raise your characters. I do not understand why Square-Enix outta all blue had to quit making the FF-games without random battle encouters and start with livecombat that SUCKS. I read in the newspaper this morning that FFXIII is delayed until 2010, and I am still hoping it's because their fixing the combat system.. I know that is not the reason, but I pray and hope - every day.
