You're only getting "duped" if you purchased a Wii without any research of what it does and will do and/or $250 is going to bust your wallet.

Is it "duped" if you're buying what you want to buy?

I hope that doesn't sound argumentative, but truth be told, this did not come out for the GC. The only way to get this product is by BUYING the Wii.

Say what you will about the people who purchased it, but in the end, they DID want to purchase it. And who's to say how anybody spends their money?

Hope I don't sound like a fanboy, but that's just honest truth.

Can you help me, Killjebus? I tried to put a Wii disc in my GameCube, but it won't fit. I also tried waggling my Wii remote at the GameCube, but it didn't respond. What am I doing wrong?

Yeah, that's called impulse buying and isn't just exclusive to purchasing a Wii. So your saying Soccer Moms and Grandmas don't talk to friends, jump on the internet, watch TV, or God Forbid, read a flipping newspaper.

Wow, Killjebus... why so bitter? If I didn't know any better, I think you were a lame troll.

Does it upset you that that Wii is kicking the ass of both PS3 and XBox 360? Is it hard to accept that Wii has sold more consoles worldwide since it released than the two competing systems combined in the same period?

:p

Doesn't matter. Based on my research*, 99% of all wii owners stopped using it after a month. Should've just been an add-on. Sounds like they WERE duped. Pay $250+ for something you stop using after a month is a rip off.

*i read many joystiq bloggers stating this. :D

Since I confessed my purchase of the wii in one of these articles, I've become a statistic as well. :(

This just proves how business-wise Nintendo is. They knew they could make much more money if they featured the gimmick as a whole new marketed console, not as an add-on for a 2nd-gen console that would wane in sales once the other companies put their 3rd-gen consoles out onto the market. It was a smart move.

I prefer Sony spending hundreds of millions of PS2 cash to evolve and improve gaming into the 21st century with the likes of HR and KZ2 rather than having a company fleece the masses with an overpriced gimmick with technology from a failed system.

All Nintendo did in my opinion is prove yet again how stupid the lemmings really are.

I'm not talking about how I feel about it as a consumer. Of course, as a consumer, I prefer companies thinking of ME when they develop new products. I am just calling it like it is. Nintendo made a smart business move. No amount of bitching about Nintendo's treatment of you or pounding your chest about "your" company changes that.

Hey now, leave "the Plumber" alone. What DOES get me pissed is that Nintendo allows such garbage to be released week after week on its "next-gen" (now this gen) system. Nintendo themselves bring out quality games. Every single game should be in 480p and be pushing the damn console but they dont, EVER!

@Killjebus: Please explain to me why the Wii being a successful product is the "death of gaming." You afraid developers are going to stop making games for Sony or Microsoft? Or that all games will become those marketable to "soccer moms, grandmas, and 12 year old girls?"

Let's just forget the fact that the average gamer is a male in his 30s and being the average gamer, he spends the more money on gaming than the minority (soccer moms, grandmas, and 12 year old girls). Think stuff through before you post your blind fanboy bullshit. Nothing wrong with NOT swearing allegiance to any company.

"I prefer Sony spending hundreds of millions of PS2 cash"

I'm sure Nintendo would've loved to drop PS2 cash on the next-gen as well, but the Gamecube didn't sell well enough to warrant that kind of spending. It's no secret, the PS2 won, which resulted in the two competitors having to rethink their strategy. Microsoft opted to rush a more powerful system to the market first, while Nintendo decided to wait and put out a different gaming experience. Now the PS3 is on the scene still competing for shelf space with the PS2, while Nintendo and Microsoft last-gen games are long gone for the most part.

Oh, and take it easy, the PS3 isn't going anywhere anytime soon. just because soccer moms, grandmas and 12 year old girls aren't playing games with the best graphics doesn't mean there's not a market out there for everyone else. And if consoles come to a halt in advancing technology, there's always PC gaming.

Of course they will. YOU might not like it, but gaming is still going to advance.
Get with it or get left behind, as they say.

...of course, there is absolutely no proof whatsoever that such a scenario will occur or is occurring, but there's no point in arguing that with you.

Saria is nailing it dead on. Nintendo made a great business decision, and males in their 30's are the biggest gaming demographic. The Wii got me interested in video games again to purchasing a 360. Get the advanced, fun, and nostalgic games of my past at the same. Everybody wins. Except talking point douches who can't let something go.

Samfish,

Perhaps you can carefully explain to me how releasing a series of sub par mini-game collections and overly priced peripherals, all in the name of separating money from an audience of waggle happy, shovelware buying peons, is advancing gaming in a healthy direction. From what I'm seeing and where I'm sitting, it isn't.

I can live without cutting edge technology, and I can live without eyeball melting photo realism. I used the same computer for 8 years up until my most recent upgrade, and I didn't buy an Xbox 360 or PS3 until last year (February and July, respectively). My favorite game of all time is Planescape Torment and it was nowhere near the best looking RPG available on the market 9 years ago.

However, I can't live without a good story, memorable characters, and/or great gameplay. The Wii, with a SMALL handful of notable exceptions, has done shit all to further any of those three gaming aspects.

I never thought I'd do it, but I agree with KillJebus's sentiments. I don't want Microsoft, Sony, or anyone emulating Nintendo's current strategy for future "success". I don't want to be given the cold shoulder because everyone's too busy pumping out inane, mind numbingly stupid mini-game collections to win over arm waving simpletons who wouldn't know what a good game was if it came up and bit them squarely in the ass.

I went through two Gamecubes (I literally played the first one to death, the other I left with my brother when I moved) and bought 20+ Gamecube games because I wanted Nintendo's console division to survive despite having four years of lackluster sales. Looking at the direction the company's taken for the last 2 years, I wish I hadn't.

"Whats this? Desegregated schools? Rock & Roll music? The JITTERBUG??!?!?! DEATH OF SOCIETY!!!!!1111!!!"

Go ahead and run for the hills, chicken little. More games for me to enjoy and less squeaky voiced teens on XBoxLive (or in your case, PSN) to mute.

My biggest regret with the Wii is that for all its last-geny-ness, it's still relatively expensive. Gaming is my hobby, but as a poor grad student, I wish the Wii allowed me to enjoy gaming more cheaply. 50 bones for a mini-game game is not cool.

Of course I have to skip out on the "hardcore" games of the 360 PS3, for now.

I actually agree. I don't have any problem with the Wii, but do wish the console itself was a bit cheaper... of course, Nintendo has absolutely no reason to drop the price given the current rate of sale.

As for the games, there are many strong titles for $30 or less if you watch for sales. Keep your eyes open, and you can enjoy a ton of great gaming on the cheap!

Oh god wow this thread is funny. You can just hear the trollboys squirm and cry with rectal agony at Nintendo's success.

You know this other story about a slightly upgraded graphics card? Somebody was like "Hey, why don't we sell this in a whole new console! People won't notice they're playing the same old shit if they're looking at shineys on the screen."

That said, didn't we hear about this already, right here on Joystiq? I'm not talking about the "lol two gamecubes ducttape" thing in general, I'm talking about this specific patent, with the tennis game picture and all. That would make this story a dupe, rather than just "old news".

Remember Nintendo's much rumored megaton that finally never happened?

And how, later, in 2004, at a time where MS and Sony's PR where focusing on the goodness of the upcoming 360 and PS3, there was an article in Nikkey newspaper where Nintendo President Iwata announced that they were not pursuing a more powerful successor to the GameCube, and instead sticking long-term to the GameCube, by adding new peripherals, they could not comment on yet, that would bring all new sorts of gameplay and interaction?

It is all the same, they just did not have it ready as soon as they expected to. And then, by the time it was feasable, the GC had quite a bad image, so the prospect of re-releasing the same console under a new name and using it as the platform for such new peripheral did not sound as bad.

Wow. I didn't realise the extent of my psychic powers. I've known this for at least 3 years. Sorry for not mentioning it to you guys sooner...

Though i don't think it was ever a gamecube "add-on" - it was planned as the main gamecube controller, but they couldn't manage it in time and on budget at that time.

On the plus side I used my knowledge to buy lots of nintendo shares and make a fortune. Oh, and to take over a small island.

Argue all you want about shovelware, graphics, and waggle. Nintendo has made more money than god.

Also while the motion controls are not that good, they are a step towards a true virtual reality. Any progress in that direction is more than OK with me.
