If you're an aspiring print gaming journalist, you could probably use a hug right about now. The recent, foreseen collapse of EGM served as undeniable evidence that that particular periodical niche isn't exactly thriving -- but everything isn't doom and gloom in the gaming mag universe. Future Publishing, owner of PlayStation: The Official Magazine and the Official Xbox Magazine, recently divulged a few surprising facts in their preliminary annual finance report -- despite near-universal hardships for the rest of the magazine industry, Future's profits and circulation numbers soared in 2008.
In an interview with MCV, Future CEO Stevie Spring chalks the success up to the strength of the industry that many of Future's magazines cover -- console video games. According to Spring, readers of the console-specific mags were "aided and abetted by all three consoles being in uplift mode the world over." Sadly, the same can't be said for The Official Ceramic Cat Magazine, one of Future's lesser-known specialty publications.

They soared because Ziff had just killed two mags in the previous 18 months. I expect they'll soar again next year since EGM no longer exists.

I'm sure it helps that these magazines come with demo disks as well.

Since EGM is out, you should bring Seanbaby over to Joystiq. He's freakin hilarious. I'm gonna miss EGM.

They publish a really good drumming mag in the UK. Wish they had one here so a subscription wouldn't be $100+ a year...

Impressive, I didn't think people bothered with magazines anymore when everything contained within is obtainable on the internet for free.

While you can bring your notebook or smartphone to the loo, chances are you will never want to use it again afterwords. That $200-2500 piece of technology will be wasted.
That recyclable periodical on the other hand, can be disposed of at any time with little monetary loss. Given its disposable nature, it is much more likely you will be comfortable relegating it to bathroom reading for the x amount of weeks it holds your interest.

I'm not one to read on the crapper, but I see your point.
Although surely 'Bathroom Satisfaction' can't be on the publisher's targets/KPIs...can it?

I think the silver lining on this recession is going to be that gaming will thrive as a medium (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7821612.stm). I would think the gaming press will perform decently as well.
I think Future publishing also does the UK PC Gamer (and I think PC Zone as well). The UK PC gamer is great imo, much better than most of the US mags. They're bigger and more substantial, with lots of good opinion articles. The latest one has a review of Dawn of War 2 (they gave it 80 something %).

This actually makes perfect sense. Future benefits from two trends: the rise of fanboyism and limited spending cash. Why spend money on a magazine that might focus on a platform you don't own and could care less about when you can just buy one solely dedicated to feeding your fanboyism? If there is only enough extra dough to buy one mag, that's probably gonna be the one.

...but you can get all the information in that mag - and much, much more - on the internet for free!
The only reason I used to get mags was for demo discs, but the Marketplace/PSN caters for that now.

True, but don't underestimate the bathroom factor. Gotta have something to read on the pot. Demo discs are a strong reason for sales too, I'm sure.

It should be noted that, according to EGM folks, the magazine had around 500,000 - 650,000 subscribers when it died. It was (supposedly) simply a matter of their new parent company not wanting a magazine.

I get PC Mag from them. It's mostly garbage, and it makes me miss Games for Windows mag.
Do they have a non-partisan gaming magazine? I've lost 3 magazines in the past couple of months (EGM, Games for Windows, and PC Mag) and I'm desperate for toilet reading. I'm so desperate that I've been considering subscribing to Game Informer....you read that right....game informer.
Every magazine I subscribe to is doomed to fail. Newtype failed, EGM failed, PC Mag failed, Games for Windows failed. I'm starting to think that periodicals hate me.
*Sigh*

Don't forget, they publish the best gaming mag out there: Edge.

Don't forget they also publish EDGE in the UK, which is THE gaming magazine for the region. It's like Famitsu in Japan, except without the creepy insider trading.

There isn't any need for several game mags, theres already forums, psn, xbl, etc etc which is why the one mag is enough for anyone.

Thanks for the input Rupert Murdoch. Maybe some of us want dissenting views and opinions.
Plus some of us actually prefer paper to sitting at our PCs. Hell I could read the gaming news on my cell phone (T-Mobile Wing) or on my computer, or my bedroom computer or the PS3 in my living room, or the Wii in my living room, or the PS3 in my bedroom. Or on my brother's POS laptop floating around the house, but I still prefer to grab a copy of EGM and page through it (usually while watching TV or a Movie). Sadly that is no longer an option.
btw as much as I liked EGM the 1up network sucks balls, so does UGO.

Well its not about what YOU like is it, if it was about what YOU liked, they wouldn't have stopped publishing due to lack of sales, I'm not making an opinion, I'm stating the facts, whether or not I like the mags or not, they have stopped being published because of the sales. Simple as.
You can tell me about how much you like flicking through each page with a smile on your face, but unless you are buying a million + of each issue to keep the magazine being published, they WILL stop publishing.
The fact of the matter is that there is simply not that much need for so many game mags any more, I used to buy game mags, but when I can get the same info on Joystiq, PLUS add my own opinions and talk to others, it made perfect sense to stop spending £3+ on a mag and instead use that cash to pick up other things in the news agent or shop. The internet is supplying most of what gamers need, the same reporters and publishers with any sense have switched over to the net to report news and talk to fans as its more direct, more accessible and in my opinion, more fun.

Why does that shit thrive while one of the only gaming mags that combined actual journalism with humor dies? One of my roommates somehow got a lifetime subscription to PSM, which rolled over to the official playstation mag when they merged (or ate each other or what have you). I say lifetime because he paid for one year, 5 years ago, and now we're stuck with it. Even hard core gamer is for sale (I used to love that mag, but I hadn't seen it since Shinders went under a couple of years back).
Add to that PC Gamer dying, and PC Magazine going digital only and my magazine rack is looking mighty slim. Thankfully Game Informer still exists (I'd much rather have EGM though). Maybe I'll have to check out GamePro and see if its any good.
