CES 2009: Joystiq's interview with Xbox's Aaron Greenberg

Were you surprised how successful the NXE has been, especially in regards to the 33 percent increase in the average size of friends' lists?
I think the increased friends was a surprise, I think the increase in downloads was a big surprise. A lot of people said "Wow, you guys added all this new content to the service," and we're like "Actually, it's been there the whole time," with the exception of maybe Netflix. We just made what was there easier to find.
Has the success of Avatars prompted you to think about other applications for them more?
So games is absolutely the right place to start. But people have been asking us for more accessories, unlockable content from games, there's lots of stuff that has to be done. But right now it's primarily focused on game integration.
Considering how successful Avatars are, talking to some of your third-parties, are you starting to get more interest in integrating them?
They're beating down our doors, absolutely. They want to integrate them into all these different experiences, and they're starting to do that. It's just going to take them some time to get all that work done. But there's been tremendous interest.
We've joked about the New Xbox Experience giving the 360 that "new console smell." Do you feel like NXE and upgrades like it is a way of extending the life of the box?
Absolutely. We treated it as if we were launching an entirely new console. So we said "What if we just completely wiped the slate clean and rebuilt the entire experience from the ground up?" It's a pretty ambitious thing to do, but that was the approach we took. We don't feel any limits on the hardware today; we have high-definition games entertainment, we have storage, we have connectivity, so we're really not limited by the power of the hardware. Now it's about how do we innovate throught software and online?
PlayStation Home has introduced clubs that members can join, have you thought about integrating something like that into Live?
I think we've seen with Live Party, that's how people are meeting friends of friends. Groups is defintiely something that's of interest and something we've thought about.
Will we have to pay for Xbox Live Primetime and 1 vs. 100?
I don't think we've given the details of that, yet. There's a lot of flexibility in that model, there's opportunities to ad-based stuff, free stuff, paid stuff, I think we're still figuring out the business model for that.
Do us a favor and call Jellyvision and get You Don't Know Jack on there.
[Laughs] It's a very good idea. [Pauses] We've talked to those guys.
Is Primetime going to launch with just 1 vs. 100?
I think the plan is to launch with just 1 vs. 100. We're spending most of our time making -- you know, making a 1 vs. 100 game show trivia game? Not that hard to do. We've spent most of our time building the infrastructure and the platform and the ability to have this massively concurrent experience.
Since this is CES, we have to ask you about IPTV integration into the 360. Is that still in the works?
The technology has actually been completed for a while now. We don't sell it directly to consumers, it's a business to business thing. There's a handful of folks that have announced that they're planning on using the Xbox 360 as the set top box to deliver IPTV. But the software itself works, now it's just a matter of those providers deciding if they want to offer it.
Thanks again for your time, Aaron.

Nice job Justin-- I especially liked that you asked him about YDKJ. It's good to hear they've at least talked to someone about it.
Sam Zebian @ Jan 11th 2009 10:09AM
too bad IPTV isn't offered by many providers. If Comcast did that, I'd buy a 360 for all of my TV's (they're only $200 now, that's the price of many high-end DVR receivers). That would be what would get me to switch from normal cable to digital cable, more interactivity with TV, not just more channels. Can't wait to try 1 v 100 though, that's going to be awesome.
Rhamsey @ Jan 11th 2009 11:05AM
oh, i want iptv nao plz.
also, nice interview joystiq.
abbi @ Jan 11th 2009 10:53AM
I like Xbox. More and more people like it. I just read a discussing on 'millionaire friends com'
giesen @ Jan 11th 2009 11:28AM
That was a softball interview...
All the questions were basically: How great are the new Xbox features? Did the amazing success surprise you?
wtf is that?
Obie @ Jan 11th 2009 11:44AM
Agreed, but maybe they were on a time constraint.
Turd Ferguson (formerly antsmarching) @ Jan 11th 2009 11:45AM
yeah, instead of getting questions to answers i did not know the answer to, he should have been all like "microsoft? more like microsucksdick! lololol!"
Turd Ferguson (formerly antsmarching) @ Jan 11th 2009 11:45AM
balls. i meant answers to questions. this isn't jeopardy
Obie @ Jan 11th 2009 11:42AM
Not bad, it would have been nice if someone asked them if we can get rid of those spam channels on the dash someday.
Aero @ Jan 11th 2009 12:27PM
They'll stay as a replacement to the ads on the old dashboard.
I don't mind microsoft keeping them if they at least let me make it so My Xbox is the default channel.
KingOfGods @ Jan 11th 2009 1:35PM
Is it really that hard to press up once when you start the box? Seriously, I always hear people complain about it not starting on my xbox when all you have to do is push up 1 damn time and you are there.
xFenixKnightx @ Jan 11th 2009 2:13PM
Agreed, KoG. Its not something that should even be complained about. The NXE is damn sweet and I'm very happy MS did this for us. Would be nice if we could have the [My Xbox] tab first, then friends but it doesn't bother me to push up on the D-pad a couple times.
Obie @ Jan 11th 2009 3:26PM
I like the NXE, don't get me wrong.
But when I start up my Xbox and the first thing I see is an add for goddamn Cranberry Sierra mist!...I will voice my distaste. I am a paying customer, so if I dislike something, I'll say something.
Courtney @ Jan 11th 2009 11:06PM
Where your box launches is just a preference, and a simple one to integrate. It's something we, as consumers who spent between $200 and $400 for a system, should be able to set. It's not like it's difficult to program, they've just made the decision to lock it onto one channel.
The point is not so much that it is difficult to push up once, but that we are paying customers and not allowing us to set such a simple preference is insulting.
Obie @ Jan 11th 2009 11:26PM
@Courtney: Agreed, I always say: Imagine if you started iTunes, and it sends you to the music store before your music library. That they decided that I should see ads before anything else on my videogame machine is insulting.
forestofdeath @ Jan 11th 2009 1:12PM

and thus, my wallet was saved.

I'm worried about his caginess on the XBL Primetime/1vs100 question. It'd be nice to hear, "No, ads are 100% supporting it!" but I suppose that's a bit unrealistic given the current economy/the fact that advertising on XBL is an unproven model (though I'd argue against that). Oh well! Good interview either way, Justin. If YDKJ never ends up on XBL, we'll know who to punch in the nose. ;)
anthonyjh @ Jan 11th 2009 1:58PM
Lame questions and one of the most annoying corporate mouth pieces in gaming.
Knight Marquise @ Jan 11th 2009 3:32PM
Always a pleasure to hear a trolls point of view.
Thank you.
anthonyjh @ Jan 11th 2009 4:41PM
Wasn't aware that expressing my distaste for loud mouths was trolling. My apologies regardless.
umm....hello??? @ Jan 11th 2009 6:20PM
soooo....once the infrastructure is in place for 101 people to play the same game, will we be seeing 50 vs. 50 matches in Gears of War 3 (assuming the matchmaking is fixed)? 50 player co-op for Call of Duty 6? c'mon!!! THOSE are questions that should've been asked!
The Alex @ Jan 11th 2009 6:47PM
Wonder why there weren't any questions about improving the NXE. I've noticed that there is far more lag (compared to the old dashboard) when I hit the big "X" button, the friends list in particular seems to take an unusually long time to load. I assume it has to do with the NXE adding more "strain" to the system, but I'm sure there must be a way to reduce the lag (but I'm not programmer and would have no idea where to start).
Anyone else notice this lag? Or am I just going crazy?
Oh, and anyone know if Canada will be getting this 1 vs 100 game as well? or will that be US only, like Netflix?
DBoyFlex @ Jan 11th 2009 10:59PM
I have only had that friends list loading lag since the NXE went public. It was not a problem while I was in the preview event. Worked like a dream, so either my xbox has become crappier since then, or the NXE has more to load now that everybody has NXE. I guess the lag is determining if friends are in parties and with whom, etc. I would like it to speed up a bit though. Would be nice. I use the guide button mainly as the list is more concise anyways.
Daniel Lawson @ Jan 12th 2009 6:20AM
It's not you dude... I think it's because it's on your HDD instead of on a flash drive... I wonder how our time compares to new Arcade users with the 256 megs of flash
