The new-and-improved-but-completely-devoid-of-history-and-tradition Yankee Stadium will make its public debut on April 16, when the Yanks are scheduled to pummel the Cleveland Indians into submission. However, we've got a pretty good idea what we'll be seeing the first time we cross the threshold of Baseball's Cathedral 2.0 -- Sony devices and branding, as far as the eye can see.
Sony Electronics and the Pinstripers announced Thursday that they'd signed an agreement designating Sony the official consumer electronics manufacturer of the Yankees. What's this mean? Well, Sony gets a prominent advertisement on the right-field wall (as well as a number of diorama ads in the concourse), and the new stadium gets over 550 Bravia and LCD HD televisions for the high-roller suites, and a PS3 gaming area in the park's "Strike Zone." Oh, also, the Yanks' new mascot is Polygon Man. That's a fair trade-off, right?

Because nothing says America like a baseball stadium sponsored by a Japanese based company?

If I were a citizen of New York, I'd be furious that my tax money was going towards garbage like this, regardless of which system / brand they chose. It's a complete waste of money, and shows you how out of touch the sports industry remains while a good portion of the rest of the country sinks into financial doom.

@Marty
This deal in particular doesn't have much to do with my tax dollars at all. Sony wants advertising. Yankees want TVs. Yankees get TVs and PS3s. Yankees shrug. Done deal.
Out of all the aspects of the new stadium that will affect tax dollars (and hopefully stimulate the economy, mind you) - the new parkland that has to be built, the eventual dismantling of the old stadium, funding for the new restaurants and attractions, parking, public transport, utilities, etc. - the business deal between the Yankees and Sony has absolutely no impact on my taxes.

Yeah, because I see charging $and arm and a leg for a ticket and then gouging you for food and drink fixing the economy. That's the kind of bullshit that broke our economy in the first place.

You know I went to a Mets game last year...also went to an Orioles game...pricing was not all that much better.
Meanwhile, giving jobs to thousands of construction workers for the projects to build both new stadiums actually does stimulate the economy, at least in theory.
The kind of bullshit that actually broke our economy in the first place had more to do with banks blindly handing out huge loans with low interest rates to buyers with bad credit histories who could never afford to pay them back. Believe it or not, the New York Yankees did not cause the recession. Stop hating. People travel from all over the country to come to the Bronx and see the stadium and the players, and that stimulates the fucking economy too!

yeah, I've got nothing to play except de Blob, Wario Land, go through Okami again, Id say Wii Fit but you don't really "play" that, Shaun White Snowboarding, 30 stars left in Mario Galaxy, Geometry Wars Galaxies, Guitar Hero World Tour. And add all the 360 games I could be playing if I didn't have to send it in (AGAIN)
Yep, Im just sitting here with nothing to do.

I see so clearly now. Who needs 26 championships, 4 of which I can clearly remember witnessing in my 23 years on earth? Who needs postseason excitement almost every year, and a genuine feeling like you've got a real good chance heading into every season? You're right, I need to go root for the Pirates.

Well I don't see Cliff Lee doing what he did last year and we saw Fausto Carmona with control issues last season. The Yankess lineup with Teixeira is out of this world and the newest rumor is they are going to sign Manny to a 3 year deal. Rumors are they are about to trade Xavier Nady and Nick Swisher to Washington - why else would they do that if they didn't plan on signing Manny.
With their starting pitching they should win the world series and they should really be able to handle Cleveland.
I hate the Yankees but it's hard to bet against them at this point.

They also did so when they opened the first stadium, and when they closed it. But that said, they've got the opening exhibition against the Cubs on April 3rd and the official season opener against the Indians on the 16th. Not an easy task to win both games. They can do it, but win or lose those games, they will have their tickets sold. When you have a traveling Broadway Show the way the Yankees do, winning and losing doesn't immediately affect your sales all that heavily. Here they missed the playoffs for a change and will still make record breaking gate sales for the season. Part of that is because of the new stadium, but the old stadium would have sold well too. It would take a good 3-4 years straight of not making the playoffs to really impact Yankee Stadium attendance.
