The new-and-improved-but-completely-devoid-of-history-and-tradition Yankee Stadium will make its public debut on April 16, when the Yanks are scheduled to pummel the Cleveland Indians into submission. However, we've got a pretty good idea what we'll be seeing the first time we cross the threshold of Baseball's Cathedral 2.0 -- Sony devices and branding, as far as the eye can see.
Sony Electronics and the Pinstripers announced Thursday that they'd signed an agreement designating Sony the official consumer electronics manufacturer of the Yankees. What's this mean? Well, Sony gets a prominent advertisement on the right-field wall (as well as a number of diorama ads in the concourse), and the new stadium gets over 550 Bravia and LCD HD televisions for the high-roller suites, and a PS3 gaming area in the park's "Strike Zone." Oh, also, the Yanks' new mascot is Polygon Man. That's a fair trade-off, right?

For realizing they are a business and should try to profit the way businesses ought to? Go right on hating...Oh, and by the way, the Yankees are one of the few baseball franchises that actually invests its profits back into its business.
The Yankees had a choice at one point. They could either spend no money and hope fans show up or they could spend a lot of money, draw 4 million+ fans every season, reinvest in big name players, open a new state-of-the-art facility, start a vastly successful regional sports network (which also generates revenue for them), and put a good product on the field, all while encouraging legions of fans to tune into their games to root against them (or in some cases, FOR them!). And among all of that, they haven't broken any rules. Boston broke one just recently...they signed a 22 year old amateur Japanese player, breaking an agreement with Japan that will likely cost MLB some future amateur talent, as some will be swooped away to play Japanese ball.
I guess it's good for the "Empire" to play the villain and be able to raise such passionate feelings amongst baseball fans and casual sports fans alike. It's probably better than a team no one could care about annually, like the Royals.

A PS3 gaming area? Is that for people to at least be mildly entertained at a Yankee game?
Posted: Jan 12th 2009 12:01PM bigjf said
I get that you hate a combination of Sony, the Yankees, and/or baseball. There's a comeback here, but I'm not sure you have much of a point, seeing as there are at least 35,000 fans in the ballpark during a game at any given time who would disagree with you on the "mildly entertaining" comment. But yes, if a casual fan is "mildly entertained," good for them. For a fanatic like me, I wouldn't even venture to the PS3 area, I'd already be excited as hell for the game. And if someone else were treating me for the day, I might even eat in the ballpark restaurant after the game.

Isn't it funny that anything even remotely Sony related gets trolled with a vigorous passion?
A story about some demo 3-D technology at Sony's CES booth = trolled.
A story about Sony and the Yankees agreeing to an advertising deal = trolled.
S.O.E. announces it think the PS3 can account for 50% of it's business = trolled.
Basically every story on Joystiq that has to do with Sony Corporation (not just the PS3) get's trolled. It's getting to the point that Joystiq is going to risk alienating it's readers to the point that a large segment of them just won't bother anymore. They should really consider some significant draconian moderation policies. This should go for all consoles and it's manufacturers.
This webiste has never been a bastion of Sony support but it has gotten increasingly worse over the last 2 months. It's to the point now that you have people who only visit this site to troll and disrupt any meaningful discussion.

Welcome to the Land of Companies that are "Cool" to Hate. Allow me to introduce you to the others; there's Nintendo over there ignoring everyone, Activision and EA drinking coffee and discussing how to run their franchises into the ground, Microsoft spazzing out in the corner, etc.
Besides, it all goes in waves. There were months when it was nothing but praise for the PS3. Just like there were months with all Nintendo praise or all Microsoft praise.

Please refresh my memory. I have been coming to this site for at least two years now and as far as I can remember that never happened.
Nintendo had some backlash after E3 this year but that was really the only time it got out of control.
Microsoft had it after the RROD warranty fiasco but even that didn't last beyond a short time.
Sony has been getting bad since I have been coming to this site but in the last 2 months it has gotten exponentially worse.

Perhaps it is because I'm busy running my own place or that I don't really do the fanboy thing for any system. Just seems there are plenty of people making comments of Microsoft being evil, Sony being liars and Nintendo abusing it's sheep. I don't see the need to defend any of these companies, they couldn't care less what you think.

They are doing so because they want to piss off people.Trolling fanboys must be one of the easiest things to acomplish.
The solution:
Vote down, move on or counter-troll in case you know how to do it.
I don't think anyone really hates those corps with such passion unless they used to work for them or they happen to be really angsty.

Just because you own all three consoles doesn't mean your not a fanboy. Just saying ...
@Moptimus
I don't think that's really the case. More than anything I see The Serpent replying to others post's as opposed to trolling in every 360 or Wii thread. In fact, he is usually in PS3 threads.
I think he was talking about the usual Vespers who come out of left field with the same dumb shit.
For an Example -
Let's say there was a post about some new Avatar clothes for the NXE. If he just came in and said ("HA HA HA WHAT A PIECE OF SHIT CONSOLE. HAVE FUN PLAYING DRESS UP WITH YOUR GAY AVATARS BITCHES. AND REMEMBER KIDS ONLY YOU CAN PREVENT HOUSE FIRES BY TURNING OFF YOUR 360. ENJOY YOUR OBSOLETE HD DVD MOVIE PLAYER YOU HOLIER THAN THOU HYPOCRITES") I would agree he is one of the people doing what I'm speaking of. More than anything he just throws out 1 liner replies.
I won't even mention any names but I'm sure most of you know the people that do this stuff.

The second part of my most recent comment was actually intended for Alien Lord not Moptimus Slime.
Alien Lord is one of the people I was talking about who does nothing but troll the PS3 with little room for actual discussion.

This is a pretty stupid idea. People go to a ball game to watch baseball, if you're spending time playing a PS3, you shouldn't be in a baseball stadium to begin with.
I hate "posers" the only thing this would appeal to, that or fat cat businessmen.

Funny, sounds a lot like what Nintendo already does at Safeco Field for the Mariners. You can even order food from your seat with your DS.
Posted: Jan 12th 2009 11:19AM bigjf said
You can? Hah, that sounds pretty cool. Come to think of it, I think they're doing the same exact thing for the high-priced seats in the new Yankee Stadium. Good to know that if I can ever afford such a seat, I don't have to travel to Seattle to experience that service.

The DS integration at Safeco is really, really cool. In addition to ordering food and drinks you can watch the live video feed directly on your DS screen, access up-to-the-minute stats and scores, play trivia. It really enhances the experience. The live feed is especially cool because it's on a ten second or so delay, so you can be watching the game in front of you, and when a really interesting play happens you can see it up close immediately afterwards from different angles or whatever and hear the commentary on your handheld without having to look around for a TV.
Hopefully they implement something similar at Yankee Stadium with PSPs; that'd be really cool.

The Yankees had no soul left to sell so this matchup is pretty good for them.

you know the WashingtonNationalshave a Sony "gaming area" in their new stadium, so this isnt really that new. but i think i would go to those stadiums to check that stuff out rather than the game itself
Posted: Jan 12th 2009 11:56AM bigjf said
And what you just said is one reason why a baseball team would want to do such a thing. They don't care if you actually come to watch the game. You can check out their PS3 setup, you can eat in their restaurants, buy merchandise, get drunk, get arrested...bottom line, they have your money. It's a cold approach, calculating, and some may say detrimental to the sport, until they realize that the profits are being put back onto the field so that the diehard fans in the cheap seats and watching at home are treated with something to root for on a yearly basis.
I'm a huge Yankee fan, obviously. I watch every game. I can't get to the Bronx too often, but I try to do so at least once a year. There are $40 seats out in right field that sit right on top of the players. I can afford that. Otherwise, there are $14 bleacher seats that I can definitely afford. The only trick for me is getting multiple seats for a game that isn't yet sold out when tix go on sale, and then transportation and parking can be costly and a bitch but that's to be expected. My point is, I can still go and enjoy the game while the fan with A.D.D. can find reasons to go and be entertained.
