In order to release Xbox 360 before its competitors, Microsoft killed the original Xbox at just four years old. November 2009 marks the four year anniversary of Xbox 360, but don't expect the system to become obsolete just yet. Microsoft's Robbie Bach told the San Jose Mercury News that the current generation will last longer than before. "The life cycle for this generation of consoles -- and I'm not just talking about Xbox, I'd include Wii and PS3 as well -- is probably going to be a little longer than previous generations."
The weakening economy will most likely delay the arrival of a new generation even further. "When you look at consumers, they are going to be more value-conscious," Bach said. A next-generation console released any time soon would be prohibitively expensive and no company wants to repeat the same mistake Sony made.Perhaps the "ten year" mantra won't necessarily be a PlayStation-exclusive PR bullet point.
The surprising success of Wii will undoubtedly make Microsoft refocus their next-gen efforts. Nintendo managed to claim the top spot of the console wars, in spite of having significantly less powerful tech. "Just coming up with something that's faster and prettier isn't going to be sufficient," Bach adds.

Oh, 1 other but Important thing.. PRICE.
It's gotta be under $299.99 with all of that.
Good luck Microsoft.. I gotcha back.

I would be happy if no new consoles are released until 2012 actually.
You can do allot with PS3/360 why move on when you don't NEED TO. If they can't push graphics anymore be more creative.
Nintendo is only one that might release a new system.
However I doubt it will be a real sequel to wii but more a better version. I wouldn't be surprised if wii this year releases 'wii black' that has 30 gigs internal flash space, and black color, with wiimotes that have motion plus pre-installed into them, wireless sensor bar, and minor firmware updates. Sell it online ONLY. With ability to transfer all your Virtual console and Wiiwares games and saves onto it.
I can so see this Hardcore Gamers Wii this year.

Yes, but Microsoft could really care less about the financial viability of their console division. They have their virtual OS monopoly, and financially, that's all they need (indeed, their non-OS ventures largely stemmed from threats to Windows, like the possibility that PlayStation could replace the PC, or how iPod could get more people on the Macintosh train, leading to Xbox and Zune, respectively)
Sony, however, had the PlayStation brand sitting as the crown jewel of its multimedia empire at one point. Much more important to Sony's overall bottom line than 360 is to Microsoft

But johnny.. YOU ARE TROLLING. you say M$ "used" us.. How?? They gave us hard core gamers what we wanted! You act like sony and it's ps brand never had hardware failures.. The ps2 had HUGE hardware failure!!! It's just that when my ps2 broke, I jumped to the gamecube. When my 360 red ringed for like the 3rd-4th time, I brought a Arcade to tie me down until my premium came back (blame COD4). The point is Microsoft did the right things for me as a Gamer!
You're just a hater. Admit it. I hate sony, and I hope the ps3 Fails.. Horibly!! I can admit to that!! Don't try to come up here with that bullsheeyt you're spewing.. You're mad..
And you do know M$ covers rrod??
Hater.
I hate sony for the moves they made in the past to loyal customers as myself. I have my reasons, and I still recently copped a psp!
I don't like pc's, I'm a Mac user. BUT the 360 is the BEST CONSOLE out right now, Period!!

I think I laid out my feeling on the subject in a coherent way. I have actual reasons as to why I moved on from the 360. If you feel differently then that's Ok as well. Now everyone is some irrational hater who draws a line in the sand. I don't hate the 360 because it's MS or because they made it. I dislike it because of the experiences I had with it which were not good at all. If you want to paint me with a broad brush of ignorance then go ahead and do so. Sometimes the truth hurts and it's easier to rationalize things if we assume everyone is the same.

I can tell you only read a few sentences and then replied. I said they used us who were early adopters as Quality Assurance testers. Are you actually going to try and argue that point? There is no need to get your feelings hurt because I liek different pieces of silicon and plastic.

I was just about to bring up the PS2's surprising longevity as well.
Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if there was at least one last update to the PS2 line before Sony puts it out to pasture. Probably something in a smaller footprint than the current slim model, combined with solid-state storage and some level of connectivity to the PlayStation Network for downloading entire games online. For around $10-$15 per title, I think a lot of users would overlook the lack of a physical disc in favor of a more Wii "virtual console"-like experience.
Such a unit could probably be sold successfully without an optical drive if the cost was kept low enough.
Not to mention it would be a great case study in whether or not online-only distribution is truly viable for long term use.

There is little point to a console update in the near future. The Wii has put the kabosh on the idea that systems need to be more powerful to be successful. There is such variability in quality between titles that it is obvious that current limitations are mostly software and creativity based. How about a decent storyline rather than anti-aliasing the shadows from each hair of stubble on the character's face?

Walt,
How about releasing games that have discernible plots and characters? How about releasing games that actually fulfill their promises of changing gameplay as we know it?
You're also forgetting that more powerful hardware allows for things that greatly impact gameplay outside of visuals. There's a reason why you're overcome with a sense of complete dread in Dead Rising when your last weapon breaks as the crowd of zombies mobbing you grows from a dozen to a hundred while there's no such sense of panic in the Wii port because the system can't handle anywhere near the same number of NPCs. There's a reason why the Xbox 360 version of Supreme Commander struggles as it manages a few thousand units on screen while a Core 2 Quad equipped system with a comparable videocard has no such difficulty at the same resolution or image quality settings.

seriously, i admit that the wii was fun, but i seriously dont want microsoft and sony to go the way of releasing an UNDER-PAR hardware for its time console... i love my 360.
I dont know what happend to everyone, but playing a lot of wii games other than wii sports DOES bother me via graphics, it does bother me that twilight princess didnt look as good as GOW. a lot of people say its just "stylized" but seriously, admit it... the graphics do end up bothering people. would you rather be playing PS1 games right now over playing the same game with better grahipcs on ps3.? hell forget that... which console would you rather play dead rising on?
dont say the wii is "more" fun than ANYTHING on the 360/ps3... because we all know that all three consoles are capable of fun... i have never felt that im not getting enoguh out of my 360, and i do feel that way everytime we get tired of brawl and wii tenis at my friend's house.
i dont hate the wii. i know its fun, but with the amount of crapware on it, combined with the eye-bothering graphics, and the lack of games for my type of gamer... its just not my thing, and i wouldnt like a generation where that is all i have to chose from.

I see a lot of discussion about hardware, which is not surprising, but it misses key trends in this generation.
First is ease-of-use design: Nintendo didn't just provide motion controls but locked in a very user-friendly design (though friends codes aren't). Getting started playing the Wii and Wii games really is easy. The idea behind the motion controls is, as Wii Sports showed, how intuitive they can be.
Second, services have become critical. It's no longer just about a console being able to play games. Downloads, videos, online chat, online events, social networks, etc. have arguably more significant in this generation than HD visuals.
If MS, Nintendo or Sony focus on hardware, they are screwing up big time. As MS recently showed, you can almost get a new product with a significant software update. I think MS and Sony get the services part, but I think they, like many folks here, also don't get the ease-of-use by focusing on motion controls.

Sony tried a half hearted attempt at motion controls with six-axis that can be expanded upon with a new independent periphrial. I don't see Sony pushing another set of new architecture and format. I think the cell and Blu-Ray will be staples of at least the next Playstation iteration.
Nintendo was in a unique position after last generation because of the failure of the Gamecube in terms of consumer adoption. They couldn't afford to take any chances in terms of consumer adoption & hardware this time around. I don't think that even Nintendo expected the success they had with the Wii coming off the Gamecube.
By the time Sony launches the PS4 Blu-Ray will be more saturated and the cell architecture will have made leaps in it's processing power. Sony is really in a good position as far as that goes because they will be able to have essentially the same machine they do now except with some increased internal specs and it will generate greater horsepower than using an exotic architecture.
The wild card of next generation is Microsoft. I'm really not sure what route they will choose to go. They could try to do what the PS3 attempted this generation and cram every single device into it's gaming machine and then some - tv tuner, Fios connectivity, web-browser, wi-fi etc etc ... I could also see them making marginal improvements and not really pushing the hardware like what Nintendo did but applying some new input perphrials in additon to the the current controller.
You need hardware features + O/S software features + online infrastructure + games + something new + an affordable price point to have mass consumer adoption. It's not as easy as making a new input device like a Wii mote.

i remember watching the E3 keynote from nintendo and how they said "4 years ago, if i stood here and said that we as a company would do so well, everyone would laugh at me" or something like that.
but i think being in that tight spot, nintendo was really put under uniqe kinds of pressure.
i think all three companies are in differnt positions, with nintendo being generally accepted in asia and europe with a need for innovation, sony known as the brand for power with a good japanese backing, and microsoft -- an american company that also does PCs, newly getting into consoles (well, comparitively new)
i agree when you say microsoft will be the wildcard, but microsoft has just so much more to do than the others in terms of possibility (not saying that the 360 doesnt have features comparitively). microsoft mediaroom, live everywhere, life without walls -- cloud computing, windows 7 or whatever is out there in 2012... (coupled with a lead in on world dommination :P) all this could really make the 360 more than a video game console, it would put true meaning to an media entertainemnt system....
maybe they would couple it with surface technologies, or something else. but they are really focusing on "natural" user input this year... (CES 09) maybe the waggle isnt so far off.... oh, and hardware failures :P
sony is in the same position nintendo was a with the gamecube, in need of a new buisness plan.... though their 10-year outlook may be different.
i wonder if nintendo would innovate at all for the next gen, or if hardware upgrades will be thier way to go.. because chances are thier cash printers will keep printing.

"Yes, but Microsoft could really care less about the financial viability of their console division."
And Sony only makes video game consoles?
Microsoft may have shipped a lot of boxes of Windows discs worldwide but don't forget all of the products Sony mass-produces worldwide. I guarantee you the profits they've made off of those hundreds of products has put a lot more zeros in their bank account than all the Windows installs done worldwide that have actually been paid for.
Game consoles are a drop in the bucket for either company, but based on respectable history alone I think the Sony shareholders are having a much better day despite all the losses on the Ps3 than the Microsoft shareholders who are now finally cutting checks to be able to gas up their private jets after the original Xbox was 100% losses and the 360 has just recently (over 2 years in) finally begun to spin a profit.
I own all 3 systems, but Alien fanboy's BS here is utterly ridiculous. Sony to fold like Sega? Please.

We all know the answer to that.. And now problems with the ps3 (not as bad as the 360), what are they doing about that?? Nothing.. Nothing but charging you.
wake the fudge up, yo... Sony don't care about y'all.. They will drop that ps3 like a bad habit and leave y'all out in the cold. Act like it can't happen.
It has before.

Ok your just proving yourself to be ignorant now. I said they used early adopters as QA tester for the 360 and that's the truth. You talking used in the generic more general term which I never said or implied.
MS only fixes RROD consoles when there are other more well known hardware defects. For instance disc read errors, disc scratching and console bricking after the NXE update are not covered under their warranty but are all well known and documented hardware defects. MS blamed the original RROD issues on the CONSUMER (YOU) until public outcry forced their hand. They are doing the same thing with disc scratching now. Saying that people are moving the console while the game is in the tray.
Sony offers a 1 year warranty from the day you purchase your PS3. The console is within the tolerable 1% failure rate of all consumer electronics. If you have an issue within the first year of purchase it will be fixed for free. They also offer an extended warranty for those who want more protection. They don't have widespread failure issues like MS so they give you a 1 year manufacturers warranty.
When did I say Sony cared about me? I never did. Microsoft dropped the original x-box like the bad habit leaving owners of that console in the cold.
What your doing is trying to rationalize being taken advantage of by saying Sony did it before. Listen, I had a PS2 and it broke down on me one time and that was after 3 or 4 years of use. All I can go by is what my own personal experiences were. I had 6 console failures in under 3 years. If you had that many PS2's die on you then I could understand if that's why you dislike Sony. You don't hear me calling you a hater for that.
You seem to think MS is your friend and that they are looking out for you. None of thse companies are our friend and all of them are looking otu for their bottom line. I have actual reasons as to why I no longer own a 360 and why I am bitter towards Microsoft. All you seem to have is blind hatred toward Sony because you chose a 360.
You are not better than I am because I prefer a different box with plastic and silicon. You seem to imply I am somehow naive why you are in the know. yet the funny thing is you are trying to equate myself with your own behavior. Denial is a wonderful thing for some people.

If M$ does a motion control for their next system, then I hope they will still support the 360.. because I won't buy into that gimmick for a second time! C'mon, really... My wii gets NO play from me!! It's a decent secondary console, but that's about it!!
Motion is a gimmick!!! I refuse to pick up the wiimote.. Give me a controller! And give me REAL GAMES!! the number one reason why the 360 is my (and im sure millions of other gamers) console of choice is because it has the games I want to PLAY!!

Don't be so dumb as to think they won't also have a regular controller. You can bet your savings acccount that MS & Sony will both have motion controls like a wii-mote next gen and probably by the end of this one. They are't biased when it comes to money. They want to tap into what Nintedo is doing.

I hope this current gen still has about four more years left. I barely migrated last summer and know a lot of people who will do the same this year, for them to come out with a new console will be a slap in the face for many people, especially with the current recession. M$, Sony, Nintendo dont give me anything until late 2012 okay, since this gen is barely getting good (game related and yes im talking about the PS3 games)

Sony's 10-year model isn't based on when they release their next console. The PS2 had a ten year plan, but it involved the successor being released before and then continued support for the PS2 up to the 10 year mark for people who still held on to the system or wanted a cheaper one until the next generation prices drop. I'd say they are about on course with that.

Just remember that consumers control the console life. Do you think the PS2 is still around just because Sony wants it around? No, it because people buy it. If consumers kill the Xbox or show a lot more love for it, it's life still could be anything.

I mean, Microsoft would be kind of stupid to not launch Halo 4 with the next Xbox wouldn't they? Obviously it won't focus on Master Chief anymore i don't think.

We've come to realize, consumers and reviewers alike, that graphics cannot make a game. Game producers took the same formula in the leap from 32-bit to 128-bit when they jumped to this generation, to take a game, make moderate changes, remove features, but toss some nice graphics onto it, and they expected the same scores. But lo-and-behold, many game developers were sorely disapointed when perennial high-scorers like Madden, 2K Sports, and so on, were getting tepid and cold responses from both reviewers and gamers. The companies haven't recovered from that yet... EA didn't know what to do with the poor Madden scores and they tried to desperately toss marketable gimmicks into the games to make them review better, but it was never there.
We've learned a lot from this generation already, and I think that we're still learning. We often talk about the "Wii Lesson," which is that you do not need hot graphics and crazy tech specs to make a good selling game -- but we're apprehensive to note the backlash, there are very few groundbreaking games that have come out for the Wii since its launch, or since those first class titles came out.
This generation still has a lot of room to go. It's been one of the most successful generations for pushing games to the mainstream, but I still feel like there's been a lot of disappointment in getting original projects out with new ideas. We still do not have "The GTA III," "Tomb Raider," or Goldeneye of this videogame era (meaning, mainstream, great games that set the tide for other games to copy, that define that era... as GTAIII defined the 128-bit era and Tomb Raider the 32-bit.
Anyway, I hope that the next Xbox, or PS3, or whatever, doesn't come out for many years... I've had a 360 for almost three years now, but it's been more or less recently that pretty much all of my friends have jumped on board... I'd be pissed to hear that a new console is coming out in 2010... when there's still a lot of improvement to do now.

Indeed. There's still room for a lot of improvement for software and even hardware this gen.
Microsoft could release a smaller model, cooler, quieter, with no rrod and with anti-scratch protection.
Nintendo could release a hard drive or the ability to play games from sd cards. They could improve their online system too...
Sony could redesign the ps3 so that it can drop its price to $300 and still turn a profit. Daydreaming, I know.

Yeah, I would love to add a PS3 to my library just for MLB the Show, but its too expensive for me at this point, especially just for a handful of games.
Or.. maybe 2K will make a decent baseball game. Now THAT is daydreaming :)

I've bought so many games this generation I'm a little surprised at myself.
Though the one thing that I still really dislike about my 360 is the social support. Sure I can play with my friends online if they have an xbox, a live account and the same game. But I can't invite them over anymore so we can all play a game together due to lack of splitscreen support. Not all my friends wish to purchase a console to play games with eachother.

Microsoft:

Sony:

Guess how much of that Microsoft made from Windows?
Also, I'm pretty sure Sony can take a lot less of a beating financially...

Microsoft is right on the money. In this terrible economy, it would be suicide to release another $400 console. Keep the 360 until 2011 at least.

Microsoft essentially sacrificed the original XBox to gain market position with the 360. Now that they have a stronger position in the market, I don't see them repeating that tactic.

I find it hilarious that even with the Wii kicking MS's & Sony's high powered console rears all over stat & sales sheets, that developers refuse to create anything groungbreaking on it. I dont think its Nintendo's fault though, as they are doing the one thing that EVERY console company needs to do...get the hardware in to homes with reliable hardware and have games as the PRIMARY function(not DVD/BluRay/HD-DVD movies). Think about it, what are the reasons why developers whine about a particular platform ?
#1: Media storage: Equipping the PS3 with a HDD was rather pointless with read-only BluRay media. Until the drive wasnt fast enough to pull the data off that huge disc. MS has stuck with DVD as well as Nintendo
2#: Ease to program for: The Nintendo systems never seemed to be a real problem to code for...or no where near as troublesome the Sony line has been.MS/DX combo is pretty standard for the last...how many years ?
3#: Getting reliable hardware into homes: Who doesnt want a Stable system & a kool(true 3D motion sensing controller, not that Sixaxis crap that tacked on another $20 bucks to the price) controller that you can mod for EVERY situation. That one Wii Mote can mimick almost every major peripheral...except a keypad. I mean, ever wonder why there hasnt been decent light gun games since the Sega machines ? And needless to say(but I will say it again), Nintendo is stomping Sony/Ps3/Little Big Plante & MS/360/Gears with just '100% backwards software compatibility'/WiiMote/1st party stuff. Go figure. Many thought that they nintendo would have been further back than Sony this gen I already have a Xbox360(refurbished and working better than when I first bought it 3 years ago)..guess which [sarcasm]Nintendo system[/sarcasm] I will be getting within a few months ?
@VampireHunter Z:
At peak power nVidia cards are considerably more power hungry than any of ATi's higher end cards.
P.S. Many believe that Sony can drop the price of the Ps3 anytime. I find that to be utter BS, because if the can/could do it 'ANYTIME' they wouldve owned MS when either Little Big Planet/MGS4 showed up. In other words, I am calling their bluff. Sony needs to keep a stiff upper lip and ride this economic crisis out, and pray KZ2 makes a HUGE difference.
