Don't forget shareholders. It will be money first, big price cut second.

The reason why the pricing has remained where it is was to maximize profits while reducing losses. The PS3, by all accounts, was the most expensive console in relation to parts used. I have to believe those costs have come down since introduction, and although it's possible Sony is still selling the PS3 at a loss, I have to believe it's not as great as it once was.

It's time for Sony to start selling in mass volume. During Christmas 2008, we saw a decline in sales, which is a classic indicator it's time for a price reduction. The barrier is not the technology, it's the level of pricing. If they can reduce the pricing, which would likely mean they'll have to subsidize the console longer, the thought would be that they'll make up the costs in the long term through software sales.

Now Sony COULD keep pricing where it is and play it safe, but at the expense of losing market share.

I believe Sony's main problem with the PS3 is the cost of entry. They won't achieve mass market pentration until the entry price comes down.

The PS3 definately needs a price cut, but it also needs more good games. It would be nice if the 360 came down in price, but no way am I waiting until June to get one. People might as well bite the bullet and pay $300, instead of waiting another six months.

The PS3 has a bunch of great games. I don't think that is a valid excuse anymore. The library is great. I want to see a list of 360 exclusives vs PS3 exclusives. Then add all of the multiplatform titles on to each list, and you really can't say one has a much better library or a large lack of games.

If I'm really wrong, that's cool, but this year's PS3 lineup will totally fill the gap you speak of.

If the PS3 prices drops to $300, it'll be pretty hard to argue that it's not a better value than an Xbox 360 Pro outside of subjective things.

I can't see Microsoft lowering the Pro's price, unless they just replace it with the 60GB.
What I'd LIKE to see is them give it the 20GB drive. The 60GB and 120GB can just stay where they are, they're reasonably priced bundled with two games.

Sony *has* to lower their price, $400 is a huge price. I don't care that it has built in wireless, a large hard drive, and Blu-Ray, the price is still $400. If I spent $500 on a PS3 I could get maybe two new games. If I spent $500 on a 360 I could get between 2 and 6 games. SIX games. If I spent $500 on a Wii I could get 5 games but it'd still be gathering dust in two weeks (sorry, I don't play my Wii that much).

I don't see it at $299 by April. I do see $349 though. Sony would be smart to drop it $50 spring, and $50 in October instead IMO. Most of the console sales occur during the Christmas time period anyway, so they can then bombard us with "Starting at $299, a game console, a Blu-ray player, a media center' or could even get desperate and say "More value than an Xbox 360" or something edgy to really capture the audience (whether it be true or not).

At least it makes sense to me that way.

I know it's still selling like crazy, but I just don't see Nintendo keeping the $249 price if both the 360 and ps3 go through another price drop.

to really know Nintendo, you have to understand that they always act as though they're in a void, leading to both their stellar innovations and their obstinate refusals to get with the times

They price their console based only upon the sales of their console, they don't price as a reaction to their competition. If more cuts from Microsoft and Sony happen to cause Wii sales to drop, Nintendo will put the price down. Equally, they'll do so if they really get serious about upping production at some point, or get to a serious breakthrough in getting costs down.

PS3 and 360 could be $100 each, and Nintendo wouldn't care if they could keep their current sales up

Makes sense. I'd be even more surprised though if the Wii production costs haven't lowered enough by now so there could be a price drop if Nintendo wanted.

I really hope they start moving their butts on the psp. i don't want some stupid bundle forcing me to get ratchet and clank and national treasure 2 for the 3000 series, and the thing would be so awesome if it had a keyboard attachment and the gps thing.

$250 for wii is too much in my opinion. The only games I want to play are Metroid prime 3 and Mario Galaxly. I already have a 360 so there is no need to buy a PS3.

But seriously, $250 for a console who I only want 2 games for? Fuck that shit. $150 would be perfect. I laugh at those of you who paid full price for it.

I can take a joke.

Of course, as much as I like MP3 and Mr. Gay, I've got other GC and Wii games to play on it. Not that there's anything wrong with only being interested in those two.

$350 for two games IS a ridiculous amount, I agree, but in my opinion $250 for two games is hardly less so. (Assuming you buy each game for $50, of course.)

I'm predicting a $50 price cut right before a GOW3 bundle (doubtful april, but maybe later in the summer) and another $50 cut before/at the holidays.

My guess:

By end of 09:

360 :
$250 for Pro with 2 big games, Elite $300, Arcade: No more

PS3: $300 with Demo Disk, Major Blu-Ray movie, and Major game

Wii: $250 with Wiisports, and demo disk of other Wii games, Wiipoints card

I would imagine that since the Xbox (in arcade form) has already been priced at the $199 price mark, they will always have at least some version available at the price, or below. Currently dropping two hundred bucks will allow you to purchase an Xbox 360 -- even if it is a "gimped" version. Now that that has been established, it is very likely they'll always have an option available at that price.

If PS3 would drop to 300€ in Europe, I would definitely buy it as media center.

If they want me to consider buying games, they need to drop their prices deep below 70€. Both Xbox360 and Wii have bunch of cheaper games.

something that no one thinks of and game publishers and developers wont allow is to reduce the price in software im sick of paying 60 bucks for a brand new game 50 should be the max maybe even 40 for the price it is to make and publish the its sooo ridiculously over priced it adds up fast especially in the holiday seasons i mean this holiday season i must have missed 12 games that i really wanted juss because to buy all those games would cost the same as buying a 360 arcade ps3 80 gig and a wii to me thats fucked up that needs to be fixed i mean get this okay say you bought 20 games full price at 60 dollars that 1200 bucks thats a shit load of money if you ask me they really juss need to cut the price of software its hurting gaming at least for me it is =/
