Mirror's Edge DLC coming Jan. 29
There's good news this morning for Mirror's Edge fans of all platform persuasions. PC users, you'll actually get to play the game when it finally appears on store shelves this week. For the 360 or PS3 people, DICE has nailed down the nebulous "January" release date for the Time Trial DLC to the 29th.
For $10, you'll get nine races spanning seven brand new maps. Comparing the screens we've seen in the gallery below to the maps in the retail version, the DLC looks a little less "realistic" and a little more, "Hey, we didn't have to pay for textures," but we'll hold off on judging until we lay our own eyes on them.

Hey, don't dis it. I think it's brilliant and pretty brave of them. Can't wait to try that.

I think Nintendo will be wanting to know how Shadow Mario got into this game and stole Faith's F.L.U.D.D.

That's what I was thinking. "What the hell, why criticise? This is beautiful". It's comments like that that cause awesome games like Mirror's Edge to under sell.

I love the visual style of Mirror's Edge. While you view this as even less attractive, this is simply much more abstract. Either way, I do admit this style is obviously easier to texture than others, but the idea is beautiful.

this looks more fun than the retail maps by far

That picture is a representation of my organisation, time management and rational thinking.
I weep....

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I thought the best part of Mirror's Edge was running madly away from police officers with bullets whizzing past your head, with a chopper over head, health almost gone, and Merc screaming "Get out of there!" in your ear. Strangely, jumping over a ledge 3 seconds faster than the previous 500 times you did it isn't as entertaining.
So, instead of creating more adrenalin pumping missions, they created levels with floating blocks. ... well, that's $10 I'll save.

Yeah, same... I hated the time trials... It just got boring, and the times were crazy. I love the way the levels look, but I can't really see these levels being that much better than the rest of the existing time trials
Neuromancer @ Jan 13th 2009 12:49PM
I'd have preferred real world style levels, but these do look pretty neat in their own right.
Mindkiller @ Jan 13th 2009 1:05PM
Well it's not a patch, just add-on content.
And it is completely different to the experience in the original single player mode. No enemies for example.
So this doesn't set out to "fix" anything whatsoever.

i think it's great. these are level designs that clearly could never have worked in the "real world" of the game. also i don't own mirror's edge, unfortunately.
BIGGEN (LIVE-PSN: BIGGEN1103) @ Jan 13th 2009 4:45PM
i would agree that the game is shitty, but not horribly shitty. i think i heard too much praise before i played it and was let down due to all its issues.
Megadanxzero @ Jan 13th 2009 7:33PM
You say that as if the rest of the game DID have textures...
I really hope these work better in time trial than the bits of existing levels in the actual game. I just found most of the time trials a bit frustrating, but then that could be because I refused to get anything other than 3 stars...
SeriousKriss @ Jan 14th 2009 5:31AM
Reminds me a bit of the defrag mod for Quake 3. Only slower and probably not as fun.
Dean @ Jan 19th 2009 9:43PM
I love this idea! Sure, I wish I could see what they'd do to this with enemies in it, but I think these floating blocks completely capture the "idea" of the game. DICE has shown it from the start up screen of the game! The idea is different than other first person shooters. *Think as quickly and effectively as you can instead of focusing on every little detail.* (Don't camp with a sniper getting head shots on everyone) The graphics in the game are still GREAT but they capture the idea of thinking quickly and cleanly very well and it looks pretty damn good for just a bunch of blocks!
