Gaming is becoming more and more popular, thanks to ever-increasing sales of the DS and Wii, and that means new gamers. A large portion of these gamers are of the female variety, and Ubisoft says a lot of them are flocking to the Wii and DS. "What's driving the Wii sales is the use of Wii by women, girls and families," said Ubisoft's senior brand manager, Ann Hamilton.
Hamilton says that the number of girls who game has significantly increased over the past two years, jumping from 50% in 2006 to 57% in 2008. But are they solely responsible for the Wii's success? We'd say not, but it's important to note that female gamers probably take up a notable chunk of the overall casual audience that has been so responsive to the Wii. In our experience, however, we've found that a game's ability to be fun to play overcomes all obstacles, including the huge chasm between us boys and the fair sex.

Nothing more than Ubisoft trying to justify their stupidity.

Stupidity? I seem to recall Ubisoft's "casual" games doing quite, quite well...

Their Imagine series may be insulting towards female gamers, but the "casual" female gamers seem to be eating it up, as David implied above.

I have a few friends who play games who are girls. I have a friend who likes Stuff like Resident Evil and Call of Duty, and one who likes stuff like wii sports, Okami, Kingdom hearts, Final Fantasy, Pokemon etc...
I think the Wii does have things that are not specifically male-based like some could call the Xbox's shooters. Like guys, girls (just want to have fun.) It's not all to different from music and movies. Gaming is a form of entertainment anyone can enjoy.
btw this article is from Tulsa World (wii fanboy used something from my home :D) Tulsa, OK

I'm trying to get my girlfriend to play Wii with me.
We enjoy Tetris Party co-op, and wiisports. It's a difficult sell however she doesn't want to lose or die, so that limits the kinds of games she might be into.

I'm a female, and seriously... Those "female oriented" games insult my intelligence. I'll take "No More Heroes" over "Wii Cheer" anyday. And for the DS, I prefer "Phoenix Wright" to "Imagine: Vet Techz." Why can't they make female games that aren't demeaning?

Um, "We Cheer" isn't exactly aimed at adults of either gender so I don't see how you could be offended by it. My niece got it for her seventh birthday just a few weeks ago. I didn't play it but I watched her and her friends play it. It looked kind of fun actually.
And yeah, I know a bunch of women and girls who play the Wii and DS regularly. I welcome that. It's always good to have a few more people to play video games with.

Christ alive... As a super creepy FEMALE GAMER since 1988, I find this beyond ridiculous. Media's attention means more reported female gamers.
Who the hell cares anyway?? Ubisoft and their lame PR stunts. "Now's the time, pump out more of that Barbie Daycare and Braids-A-Wonder now! We have the female eye on us!!"

Wow, tens of millions of sold consoles and a 7% increase in female players. Big Deal. What's the overall increase in players and that split into male/female? But it took them only two years:
