FusionFall: Cartoon Network's browser-based MMO launches

Turner and Cartoon Network today launched FusionFall, the network's first foray into the MMO world. The game, which features re-imagined characters from CN shows including Ben 10, Dexter's Laboratory, Powepuff Girls, Samurai Jack and others, is browser-based and developed by Korean studio Grigon Entertainment.
FusionFall offers a free-to-play area for users to get a taste of the action before deciding if the monthly subscription (which starts at $5.95) is worth it or not. In our admittedly brief time with the game's beta last year, we found the combination of Phantasy Star Online style combat and platform game elements surprisingly appealing. (Especially considering that the game is primarily aimed at kids and those in their early teens, i.e. not us.)
For a deeper glimpse into FusionFall, our friendly neighborhood MMO gurus at Massively have put together a really swell guided tour of the game, which you can toon into by clicking here.

I would be excited about this except that I used to play Maplestory until I decided that I was tired of being cursed at by KSing 12 year olds. I can imagine that the experience wouldn't be much different here...
knighty (GT: ZeraKnight) @ Jan 14th 2009 7:47PM
The Naruto wannabee assassins and Nexon's never-ending hate of Archers killed it for me (seriously, give us some kind of health bonus. Lagging for a split second and dieing from 1 Bone Fish hit and losing an hours worth of grinding is not kewl). Still managed to get to level 93....really ought to get to 100 just so I can say I did.
IGLAW @ Jan 14th 2009 7:43PM
Gentlemen, the bastardization of every single 90's cartoon franchise you grew up with.
All at once.
Enjoy.
Sora @ Jan 14th 2009 7:45PM
As long as Hey Arnold! is never bastardized. Best. Cartoon. EVER.
Comet @ Jan 14th 2009 7:46PM
Is Johnny bravo in the game?
offday @ Jan 14th 2009 7:53PM
I have to agree with that Hey Arnold comment. It still bothers me to this day that that Helga never told Arnold how she felt, or that we didn't find out Arnold's last name.
I grew up with nicktoons. Cartoon network was never really my thing. I do miss my hey arnold, doug, rugrats, angry beavers, and ren and stimpy though.
CubeGuy @ Jan 14th 2009 8:00PM
@offday
"Arnold Shortman"
You're welcome.
Dr Jeckyl and Mr ESC. @ Jan 14th 2009 8:12PM
Still not worse than Rule34.net.
Moptimus Slime (Leader of the Ryan Scott Defense Force, A Wurr? My Burr) @ Jan 14th 2009 8:19PM
fuck Hey Arnold, what happened to Sheep in the Big City? Courage the Cowardly Dog? Samurai Jack? You know, the only shows (other than Ed Edd & Eddy) that could actually appeal to someone over the age of 6? Now all they have is generic anime, a decent Spongebob Squarepants ripoff, Total Drama Island (which is actually quite decent as well), and Adult Swim.
Ivory Tower of HighHorseness @ Jan 14th 2009 9:01PM
"that Helga never told Arnold how she felt, or that we didn't find out Arnold's last name."
Sounds like someone never saw the Movie.
Pfft, and you call yourself a fan...
Wiinterfang @ Jan 14th 2009 9:01PM
Kids today doesn't have it that bad, Clone wars is good,Batman the brave and the bold is nice too, Total Drama Island is pretty good too, Ben 10 is a good show, not the best thing ever but kids totally dig it.
08 was a good year for CN, I remember it was utter shit on 07 with those unfunny awful shows like Lazlo etc..
Ivory Tower of HighHorseness @ Jan 14th 2009 9:03PM

Nice list. Ben 10 was hit and miss but Alien Force is pretty good. The Brave and the Bold is pretty awesome, Clone Wars is kinda meh but at least it has production values...
How come I'm not seeing Flapjack and Chowder mentioned? Some of the best cartoons of last year, fo sho.
Still can't get over the fact that Avatar is over...
offday @ Jan 14th 2009 9:56PM
I just saw Courage the Cowardly Dog on like 2 days ago.
And don't you dare use the name of Arnold in vein.
Mr Khan @ Jan 14th 2009 10:24PM
High five for Total Drama Island. I really didn't like it when i started watching it, but before i knew it, i was hooked.
Damn those Canadians and their quality cartoons.
Also: If they fuck with SWAT Kats, i'll have to do something. Something involving dynamite
finnith @ Jan 14th 2009 10:33PM
Hey Arnold! was great but you have to admit that Dexter's Lab was awesome.
In my opinion, the 2d Clone Wars series was a lot better. Maybe I just liked how over the top Mace Windu basically punching out an entire droid army was.
@Ivory
I miss Avatar too...
slycooper_rocker [patapon defence force] @ Jan 14th 2009 11:02PM
i agree with khan and moptimus. there are lots of cartoons (especially ones made by genndy tartatovsky) that should never be bastardized. if invader zim, swat kats, ed,edd, and eddy, and megas xlr ever get touched in a bad way, i'll rip off the balls of whoever did it and stuff them up their ass and then rip them out and stuff them in their mouth.
T-Patch @ Jan 14th 2009 11:35PM
I am absolutely loving how this post went from MMO to a discussion of 90's cartoons.
It's too bad I don't get Cartoon Network anymore... Dang Comcast moved it up to digital only. >_> **insert rant/obsenities here**
oh, and @slycooper_rocker: I second everything you said, right down to the dot.
The Dark Wayne @ Jan 14th 2009 11:48PM
flapjack is funnier than anything on TV.
SithLibrarian @ Jan 14th 2009 7:46PM
Oh, Dexter...what have they done to you...?
Mr Khan @ Jan 14th 2009 10:26PM
It took me a while to figure out that was the same Dexter.
Seriously messed up
DBuck_Eye @ Jan 14th 2009 7:46PM
Is it me, or does Ben 10 seem completely out of place in that collection of cartoons?
offday @ Jan 14th 2009 7:51PM
Doesn't Nickelodeon have a MMO with nicktoons fighting global warming or something too?
Levi @ Jan 14th 2009 7:53PM
totally gonna try to get my girlfriend into this so she'll have something to do while I play my video games.
cjshrader @ Jan 14th 2009 8:13PM
Is your girlfriend 13? There are laws against that.
Dr Jeckyl and Mr ESC. @ Jan 14th 2009 8:16PM
Why don't you take a seat right over there...
(I miss my Chris Hansen Avatar)
Levi @ Jan 14th 2009 8:23PM
Naw, she just acts like it XD she likes Boom Blox, thinks LBP is cute, and adored Home the one time she tried it. But she's only played these games like once. I need to get her INTO games.
cjshrader @ Jan 14th 2009 8:41PM
If I had a child I'd never let them on Home. After seeing how people (And by people I mean me) act on there, it is no place for children.
I guess that's an unrelated statement but there it is.
Dr Jeckyl and Mr ESC. @ Jan 14th 2009 8:15PM
I want to create an account there under the name Nicktoons4Eva or InvaderZimRox.
As far as Web MMOs go I say that at least it looks a lot better than Maple Story in many aspects.
AoE @ Jan 14th 2009 8:25PM
um... it's free to join, instead of wanting, why not just go out and live the moment man? Sure it'll be anticlimactic and maybe even a little deflating... but you can check it off your list of wants ;)
Moptimus Slime (Leader of the Ryan Scott Defense Force, A Wurr? My Burr) @ Jan 14th 2009 8:25PM
Why is Invader Zim so popular? It couldn't be anymore emo if it was nothing but people reading poetry they wrote in their own blood for 30 minutes. I've got nothing wrong with emo or punk (hence my Suicide Girls account :D), but that show was worse than Twilight (BTW, just thought I'd thank Stephanie Meyers for bastardizing AND pussifiying Vampires forever. I will never look at a Castlevania game the same way ever again)
Dr Jeckyl and Mr ESC. @ Jan 14th 2009 9:02PM
*Grabs Smash Ball.
ITS SHOW TIME!!!
(I’ll pretend I didn’t read that, seriously Counter-culture much? )
Dr Jeckyl and Mr ESC. @ Jan 14th 2009 9:05PM
Is more of a joke actually. If it takes a literal form well it stops being funny.
Also there are already accounts with that name probably. Not to mention that if I finish early I can go home and play more Dead Space.
slycooper_rocker [patapon defence force] @ Jan 14th 2009 11:04PM
bite your tongue moptimus! there has never been a cartoon before night that has been that dark and sadistic. it was beautiful. and the theme song was cool too.
YonGibbeynater @ Jan 14th 2009 9:22PM
Is it just me, or do those characters look like they've been designed by Bleedman?
Dr Jeckyl and Mr ESC. @ Jan 14th 2009 9:28PM
Damn you Moptimus. That really got me I couldn’t stop thinking how to describe the show accurately is like if you want me to describe Ren & Stimpy in full detail. It can’t be done without losing the full perspective.
In areas where Ren & Simpty hilarity came from full randomness and insanity (see below) Invader Zim Hilarity came from its pitch dark humor and its sinister environments.
You have to watch the show and if you think that’s emo well Emo for you better mean awesomeness pal because you don’t idea what the hell emo is (Do it again motherf*cker and I’ll cut you).
While you are at it you also have to watch Pinky and the Brain,Eek the Cat,The tick, Animaniacs, Histeria and Megas XLR (Toonsilvania wasn’t bad, honest). It sucks that a lot of clever shows are canceled to bring crappy shows and pokemon rip offs also it was weird how shows like those were clever and yet they managed to pull off jokes that went under the censorship radar.
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=sS2ZfkyKT44
Note:That's a clip from the R&S Adult Party but is part vengeance for calling IZ Emo.
Mr Khan @ Jan 14th 2009 10:33PM
the late 80's, entire 90's, and early 2000s was the golden age of American animation. The cheesiness of the early to mid 80's largely faded out, and the actual, visual quality of the shows peaked, as well as writing that was truly timeless, appropriate for all ages
Although, like stated above, there are latter-day cartoons that equal that level of all-ages writing, but most cartoons are so crudely drawn now. Everyone uses Flash, like Foster's or Total Drama Island
slycooper_rocker [patapon defence force] @ Jan 14th 2009 11:05PM
THANK YOU! you just mentioned the two greatest cartoons ever (IMO of course)!!! i wish megas never left CN. :(
The Dark Wayne @ Jan 14th 2009 11:51PM
thank God you mentioned 2000s, because Justice League Unlimited and Batman Beyond are my two favorite shows in any genre
Dr Jeckyl and Mr ESC. @ Jan 15th 2009 11:29AM
Batman Beyond : The return in the Joker is one of the most Epic Batman Stories ever.
I wish Dc could pull stuff like that again. I was reading the Justice Society Yesterday and it seems they killed Lighting Lad from the Legion...again.
Zertoss @ Jan 14th 2009 10:06PM
I find the game's art style to be quite charming. Also any game that has both Samurai Jack and Megas XLR in it can't be all bad.
Totally bizarre seeing them next to characters from Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends and Kids Next Door though. It's like someone was dropping acid while watching Cartoon Network and all of the shows just bled together, and they thought "I HAVE AN IDEA! Man I am TRIPPIN!"
Mr Khan @ Jan 14th 2009 10:29PM
Is it any stranger than seeing Samus blow the hell out of Kirby? Or Ike impaling Mr. Game and Watch?
Zertoss @ Jan 15th 2009 9:24AM
Somehow it is.
Bones3D @ Jan 15th 2009 1:58AM
Also worth mentioning, the game was created using the Unity game engine. I've been toying with it for a number of months myself... not all that bad.

Currently Macintosh only though...
