Joystiq review: Fable 2's Knothole Island (DLC)

Is it worth the $10 asking price? Well, the truth is that your feelings on the main game will have already pushed you to the brink of a decision, and you just want us to push you that little bit further. We can tell you that everything you love (or loathe) about Fable 2 is on Knothole Island: the unwaveringly witty writing; the real estate opportunities; the charming townsfolk; and treasure. Oh, the treasure.
Gallery: Fable 2: Knothole Island (DLC)
Some you'll find in the new speciality stores -- like the "Box of Secrets," which grants you rare, mystery items in exchange for mainland goods -- and some you'll find in each of the island's three dungeons. The island itself, which stands out as one of Albion's most gorgeous environments, is also littered with buried items and chests, some of which are only accessible in certain weather. There's really an awful lot of things to drink, wear, swing, sell and shoot.
This vibrant new piece of Albion also has its share of quests, three of them explicit and two aimed at people (like us) obsessed with finding every last cool item. Oddly, our main disappointment lies with the three "real" quests. They all share the same structure and are, unfortunately, devoid of the charm and characters that made the sidequests so enjoyable in the main game. While the meteorological meddling plays to Fable's strengths (your actions visibly affect the world), the dungeons themselves are a bit too straightforward and rote. Lionhead, we never want to see a flit switch again. Ever.
This is really more of a problem if you've already completed the game, we suspect. If you were to visit Knothole in the middle of your main adventure (and you can), the tasks and combat challenges would probably feel quite a bit more substantial. As a post-game piece of content, however, some of your actions lose weight. This is particularly obvious when a character tempts you down the "evil" path with 10,000 gold. That's almost certainly a picayune payment to anybody who's completed the main quest, and it weakens the moral dilemma you'll face after three to four hours.
Though the central quests failed to blow us away (that's a weather joke, right?), Knothole Island fits perfectly into Albion. Even now, it continues to lure us back with fun potions, rare weapons, undiscovered dig spots and the strangest looking bard in the entire game. He looks positively spoony.

Do want. Also want the assault rifle.
Kevin949 @ Jan 14th 2009 10:43PM
it'd be nice if it actually acted like an assault rifle though.
Alien Lord @ Jan 15th 2009 2:27AM
@ Kevin949 is it better then the other rifles?
Paulmichael @ Jan 15th 2009 2:59AM
It does 59 damage and only has one augment slot...It's decent, but if you're far enough along in the game already then it's much weaker than what you'd already have. Oh, 24 round clip is nice though.
neebick @ Jan 15th 2009 10:45AM
I was disapointed with its rate of fire. I was hoping it would be a good rifle replacement for the Red Dragon. It is nice with the large clip size and fast reload, though. I just won't be giving up the Red Dragon anytime soon.
FailedNinja @ Jan 15th 2009 12:22PM
I am also a fan of the Red Dragon, but I don't expect to be using it much longer. Knothide Island has a vendor that sells weapons with up to 4 augments. So it's just a matter of waiting for a clockwork pistol (or rifle) with 4 augments to become available.
As for whether the DLC is worth it.
I think if you're a fan of the game, it's worth the buy, but you can find better bang for your buck if you're watching your spending.
finnith @ Jan 14th 2009 8:54PM
That Fable 2 360 looks mighty compelling.
bknight @ Jan 14th 2009 8:55PM
Enjoyed the DLC, I hope lionhead does more DLC as i would like to continue my fable experence
Nick the Hero of Canton @ Jan 14th 2009 8:55PM
Can't wait to add the points to buy it.
Dr Jeckyl and Mr ESC. @ Jan 14th 2009 8:55PM
I think my comments about Fable 2 got misinterpreted. I do not hate the game but at contrary I liked it a lot but the problem is that I hate when a game can’t reach its full potential. There was Fable 2 about to join Diablo 2 and Never winter nights in Epic Town when suddenly it got a hearth attack a little further from the middle of the road.
I don’t ask for much just about 2 extra missions and a decent Boss Fight to wrap it up and have a fulfilling resolution. There so many things they could have done with the game and it has so much potential. If Lionhead manages to make Fable 3 twice as long as Fable 2 I’ll be the first one to give them my money.
So yes I recommend it. Simple to play, you can finish it within a week if you don’t care about the side quest and massacring an entire town while fighting constant hordes of angry guards from time to time never stops being fun.
About the DLC:
I really liked how you can actually have a taste of it without paying it. I though that was a very good idea that most developers should start doing from now although yes for the time it takes to download you can just go right ahead and bough it if you want the Rifle so badly but I’m not in right to critic anyone there because yeah I’m also victim of Halo hype syndrome.
finnith @ Jan 14th 2009 9:15PM
You never "finish" Fable 2, even if you've completed the main story.
And Fable 2's ending was a cliffhanger, as it made it sound as if "that person" would be an antagonist later on, setting up the third game perfectly.
Megadanxzero @ Jan 15th 2009 6:29AM
Well err... I finished it... What else is there to do? I've completed all the quests other than the ones that can't be completed and personally I don't find endlessly donating money or killing slavers with one magic attack particularly interesting... The only thing I haven't got is some of the achievements, but one of them seems to be impossible to get without buying Pub Games, and screw that...
Anyway, I think the DLC's worth it for Knothole Island's snowy variant, but I did think the island would be a little bit bigger... There isn't really anywhere to go other than the places you have to go, which was a bit disappointing, but it was fun nonetheless. The trading shop was a great idea, purely because it made my 4 MILLION gold meaningless and meant I still had to actually go looking for stuff. I really wish some of the shops had a set inventory though... I've never seen a Regal Purple Dye in the entire time I've played the game ¬_¬
Dr Jeckyl and Mr ESC. @ Jan 15th 2009 11:26AM
Seriously? I mean really?
Well the thing about your theory is that is more likely Fable 3 will start years and years after Fable 3 pretty much like Fable 2 after Fable with not connection between games to start fresh again.
So No dude also it wasn't a cliffhanger you pretty much save the earth in the most weak Boss fight ever claim your price and get enough gold to buy the entire world.
I don’t know where you heard that.
tmacairjordan87 @ Jan 14th 2009 8:58PM
I still haven't really played the main game as much as I should be (damn you WoW), but I'm going to be getting this as soon as possible. The last 800 points will probably go towards the fallout 3 DLC so it all works out nicely.
Doug @ Jan 14th 2009 9:48PM
Never bought Fable 2. I thought about, but decided that I wanted Fallout 3 more. Which was really good.
DBoyFlex @ Jan 14th 2009 9:57PM
I am glad I bought Fallout at launch and got Fable for Christmas. Fallout is the bomb.
Reinard @ Jan 14th 2009 10:14PM
I fail to see the relevance of this comment to this article, then :\ This is a review of Fable 2 DLC. Why are you going out of your way to tell us you've never played the game when you could've quite simple skipped over this entirely?
Like, honestly, no offense, I just don't see the point D:
Mike @ Jan 14th 2009 10:47PM
"Fallout was the bomb."
hahahahaha good one.
waves @ Jan 15th 2009 8:56AM
I bought Fable II at launch. Beat it in no time. Started a 2nd game. Realized that I was getting bored. Returned it within the 1st week for $30.
I ended up buying Fallout 3 which had everything that Fable II was missing for me. I may go back and pickup Fable II when the price comes down, but I hadn't counted on it getting game of the year from so many places. I thought it was OK, but nowhere near as good as Fallout 3, LBP, or even Far Cry 2. So it looks like I'll be waiting a while until I play Fable II again.
My sister loves it though..
Doug @ Jan 15th 2009 5:20PM
Oh, sorry, I thought I mentioned Fable 2- oh wait, I did. Yeah, technically, this is relevant. Sorry if I disappointed you.
Ranus Studios @ Jan 14th 2009 10:10PM
I'm not really interested in Fable, but I'm ALWAYS interested in references to bards that may or may not be spoony.
Game_playa @ Jan 14th 2009 10:25PM
Why don't you guys review PS3 DLC?
BIASED.
soviet chick @ Jan 14th 2009 10:54PM
PS3 has DLC? Sure Warhawk "campaigns" rock, but do Resistance Maps and LittleBigPlanet skins really count?
I kid, I kid... I purchased the flOw add-on pack too!
Ludwig Kietzmann @ Jan 15th 2009 9:59AM
Well, here's why I reviewed it: Because I bought it, and people kept asking me if it was worth it. I also think Fable 2 is a little more relevant at the moment (it was our GOTY) compared to something like Warhawk.
You may have been joking in your comment, but I just wanted to make sure everyone understood the motivation behind this review. No platform bias involved!
The Dark Wayne @ Jan 14th 2009 10:56PM
I get the feeling it;s bugged, i know there are supposed to be 3 main quests for the island and I;ve only gotten two, and no matter what i do it wont activate. Ive even gotten every single item in the box of secrets
ChooChooCharlie @ Jan 15th 2009 1:39AM
Have you tried:
- Talking to the Mayor/Chieftain of Knothole Island
- Leaving Knothole Island and then returning again
- Leaving, starting a different quest on the mainland (Crucible, Westcliffe Range, etc), and returning to the island again
If none of those works, then I have no idea.
The Dark Wayne @ Jan 15th 2009 7:04AM
yeah that's the weirdest part I've done all of those, except talk to the chieftain, but he's disappeared. I even did the crucible and the tattered spire
Ludwig Kietzmann @ Jan 15th 2009 10:00AM
Have you completed the game? I don't think all the Knothole quests are unlocked until you've passed a certain point in the main game.
Eric @ Jan 15th 2009 10:09AM
I have the same problem man. I want the rest of the Night Armor. But i need to do the last quest. But it's not there.
Zoot Suit Jedi @ Jan 15th 2009 12:56PM
@Eric
Would that be armor that only appears at night? I haven't found any of that on the island. I did find the Knothole Island KNIGHT Armor, and yes, it's sweet.
The Dark Wayne @ Jan 15th 2009 8:24PM
yeah I guess that was it Ludwig, after I did the cullis gate to wraithmarsh quest I was able to do the rest of the knothole stuff.
Shafnitz @ Jan 15th 2009 12:00AM
I thoroughly enjoyed the DLC, but I will agree it did contain a few too many flit switches. If you already love Fable 2, it's just a little more to love.
Namssorg @ Jan 15th 2009 12:06AM
Oh sweet lord, I can finally resurrect me doggie.
baby sea tuna @ Jan 15th 2009 7:29AM
I was really excited about that too, until I realized the price (I am playing as a Saint, basically.)
Namssorg @ Jan 15th 2009 9:39AM
I know.. My hero currently has a Halo- but I figured, "What the hell, I've already sacrificed a ton for all of these people... maybe in my old age I can bend the rules at least enough find some seedy sucker to sacrifice to bring back my dog!"
Paulmichael @ Jan 15th 2009 3:02AM
Could someone please kill James? Thanks.
baby sea tuna @ Jan 15th 2009 7:34AM
Ugh, so close to getting the new Achievements and the game is screwing me. I will pay anyone 2 Million gold for 2 puny carrots. Or, the Legendary sword The Wreckager. I'll trade that instead. Anything to save me any more hunting around for them.
ChooChooCharlie @ Jan 15th 2009 12:57PM
You can typically find puny carrots in a 2-star economy town (usually Bloodstone). The produce shop there has them pretty regularly.
Another option is stealing from the Bowerstone Inn dressers and cabinets.
The Dark Wayne @ Jan 15th 2009 8:26PM
I had the same problem, the only place I managed to find them was the bowertsone old town food stall, and I had made the choices as a child that made old town classy
Namssorg @ Jan 15th 2009 9:41AM
My 2nd character is still screwed- there is a guard who will NOT stop attacking me on site, and I cannot kill him. Even if I pay a fine to another guard (which resets them) he still comes after me for no reason.
Scott @ Jan 15th 2009 5:52PM
what is the red dragon? Never got it in the game
ChooChooCharlie @ Jan 15th 2009 6:33PM
It's a fairly powerful pistol you can win for achieving 1st place in the Westcliffe shooting range.
Laura June @ Jan 15th 2009 7:56PM
WANT!!!
Scott @ Jan 15th 2009 8:42PM
thanks man, any suggestions on what to use? i have tried to that several times but failed on all attempts LOL, more of a hack and slash kind of guy. LOL
ChooChooCharlie @ Jan 15th 2009 10:26PM
A clockwork pistol usually does the trick. It's fast and has a good reload time. Just make sure you get headshots.
Also, it will usually glitch and have the same target pop up 4-5 times in a row one right after the other, so try not to move your sights too much.
Ryan Hamilton @ Jan 17th 2009 4:49AM
Fable II is one of the strangest games I've played in recent years. You can't die and there's no real challenge. You just go and do things in the game and you're never worried, will I make? Yes of course you will, easily too. Yet even with that. You're strangely drawn back to keep playing. Why?, to discover things and there's plenty to discover.
It's also the first full 360 game, not XBL game, where I actually wanted to work my ass off to get all the Achievements. I have 7 to go. It's even weirder that I played the first Fable for maybe three hours and never wanted to play it again, but here we have Fable II and it might as well be the first Fable game to me, because I get can't enough of it. It's my game of the year!
Joshy-Poo @ Jan 25th 2009 12:41AM
You can bring your dog back on Knothole Island? I really wish I read that before I chose the "love" option at the end of the game. Of course, I also thought it would bring Rose back to life too.
"I finished Fable 2 & all I got was this stupid dog".
Dan CiTi @ Jan 26th 2009 1:37AM
But the Dog is by far the best part of Fable II...
WiNG from www.LifeinaGame.com XboxLive&SteamCommunityID: WiNGSPANTT @ Jan 28th 2009 5:55PM
Nice review.
H60hadgi @ Mar 23rd 2009 1:29AM
I chose the gold muahahahhahaha then bought every piece of realestate in the game. now i collect 20k a day for rent haha.
