Nintendo Korea boss Mineo Koda believes his company's success is dependent on its ability to release "fun" products, and not on the state of the economy. "Regardless of downturns, consumers pursue something fun," Koda told Asia News Network. Capcom's Michael Pattison wouldn't disagree, though he believes Q1 2009 will be fruitful for his company because of "core" gamers' support. "The industry isn't immune to what's happening in the economy," argues Pattison. "Core games are perhaps better placed than those targeting a more casual audience, as core gamers will obviously purchase more games than a casual gamer." Capcom is releasing two, core franchise sequels in Street Fighter IV and Resident Evil 5 this quarter.
Of course, Nintendo, which is thriving from "casual" purchases, appears exempt from Pattison's assessment and is very much in a league of its own. Or, rather, a league of exclusive "recession-proof" products, namely: chocolate, booze and cigarettes. It would seem, then, folks are in need of Wii Fit now more than ever.
