December NPD: PSP sells 1.02 million systems

PSP sold 1.02 million units in December, according to the latest NPD results. While these figures are quite good, they do pale in comparison to Nintendo and Microsoft's consoles. Software sales were particularly good for PSP last month, with more than 3.7 million software units were sold for PSP. Popular purchases include games, such as, including popular hits such as Madden NFL 09, WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2009 and Lego Batman: The Videogame.

Hardware Sales for December 2008:

DS - 3.04 million
Wii - 2.15 million
Xbox 360 - 1.44 million
PSP - 1.02 million
PS3 - 726K
PS2 - 410K

Official SCEA statement:
"The PlayStation brand has had a solid calendar year with total PS3 hardware sales up 40% and total PS3 software sales up 115%. We remain confident in our momentum into 2009 as we continue to deliver to our consumers the best entertainment content and technology out there. And we delivered on that promise this past year with one of the best software line-ups in the industry, a dramatically expanded PlayStation Network with the launch of the video delivery service and the beta of PlayStation Home, as well as extended hardware offerings with the PSP 3000 and Uncharted 160GB PS3 bundle. We also hit a remarkable milestone for the PlayStation 2 platform in North America with 50 million units sold. It's truly an amazing testament to the power and legacy of our brand."

No surprise here considering the low number of new games being released.... come on Sony get your act together with the PSP!!

More than a million? Wow, that's pretty good.

At least it sold more than the PS3, that's good.

Is it just me or do I smell a comeback? 3.7M units of software while we are in the midst of a "PSP software drought" isn't too shabby. Just imagine what that number would be if there were any significant AAA holiday releases for the system....

Yeah, that's pretty impressive considering there was no new PSP games released in December.

Sony don't deserve those sales though, their PSP support has been awful.

I dunno. There must have been at least 80 million units of software sold in Dec (based on the dollar total of $2.75 billion), so 3.7 out of that isn't very impressive.

And for the year, the two top sellers on the PSP (CC + GoW) combined for sales of 1.3 million, which wouldn't even place them on the top ten chart (#10 was I think 1.5 million games sold)

So... PSP is Sony's best selling console now huh.

The overlooked fact is that Sony sold a lot more PlayStations than Microsoft did Xboxes.

If you're stating the fact that Sony has 3 PlayStation products on the market to Microsoft's 1 then yeah they sold more that month.

Don't be silly. Again, the undeniable fact is that Sony sold a lot more PlayStations than Microsoft did Xboxes. They do this month after month after month. In other words all year long.

No, it's 'silly' to say the PS2, PS3 and PSP should be counted as 'one' platform. Sony is doing absolutely horribly this gen and no amount of lumping three entirely different platforms (that don't all run the same games) together is going to change that fact.

It's refreshing seeing Sony Fanboys using the same arguments us Nintendo fanboys using during the Gamecube years. :)

thats kinda funny that the psp almost beat out the 360 i do think the 360 is gonna tank in 09 besides the two halo games MS has nothing this year.

still didn't beat DS or wii or 360. a million units... not bad. we'll see what happens when the new PSP games come out

SCEA gets the Spin-Master award, that's for sure. OK, so the PS2 finally reached the 50m mark. That doesn't mean it's moving many units on its own, or that its sales are going to be going up to help float Sony through this brutal failure.

One would hope they wake up to the fact that the PSP is still their best bet at a successful platform with many more units sold than the PS3 and better sales through this past Christmas season... But they won't, of course, and dump more futile PR cash at the PS3 while letting a huge library of great Japanese PSP games accumulate overseas while the US market continues to die off, strangled by a lack of domestic titles and absolutely no accessory or 1st Party development by Sony.

...Oh, but teh piracy!!11!1
