Heavy metal icons Metallica have let the black cat out of the bag. Guitar Hero: Metallica is coming to North America March 29th for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and the rest of the world sometime in May. The PS2 and Wii versions are coming this Spring, "also most likely in early May," according to the band's website.
For those who need a little reminder, this is Guitar Hero ... with Metallica. Oh, and there's "expert-plus" drums. The game includes 28 songs from the group's discography, as well as tracks from Alice in Chains, the Foo Fighters, Slayer, Machine Head, and Queen (as in Freddie Mercury, not of the Stone Age variety). We've placed the trailer after the break.
this is going to be $60 for about 40 songs, just like that shit sandwich that was GH:Aerosmith. While Metallica has a lot better music, this is still an ass raping from a value standpoint.
You have to wonder why Guitar Hero hasnt learned from Rock Band yet and stopped releasing the stupid standalone discs.
It really is useless, I cant imagine anyone at a party wanting to stop the game to load up another game just to play a couple songs and then go back to the real GH. Terrible.
1. Not everyone has internet connection. There's still a ton of people who don't and can't get songs any other way.
2. People do play this game more than just in a party scenario and if you're guests can't wait 2 minutes then they have bigger things in their life to worry about instead of loading screens. Like seeing a therapist.
There are 28 Metallica songs plus 20 song from other bands, equaling 48 songs total. $59.99 divided by 48 songs equals $1.25 per song. Which is $0.74 cheaper per song compared to the $1.99 per song for DLC.
Just give it a few months. Retailers will give it a mega-markdown once they realize that not so many people want a (primarily) one-band game. Hell, I just fetched the Aerosmith 360 game + guitar bundle for $25 at Target last night. While that's not a nationwide deal, I have seen similar deals pop up all over the place.
And can you imagine the markdowns if they make a full-band bundle and no one wants it?
I know that I'm pretty sick of Everlong at this point.
My friend and I were doing a setlist with Everlong in it a week or two ago in Rock Band 2. It asked if we wanted to replace the last song with a song that was challenging on drums; we agreed, and what was the last song? Everlong.
Everlong twice in one set list = painful. It just drones on and on.
While playing GH:WT, someone says "hey, let's play some Metallica!"
1.Stop the current game. 2.Pop out the disc and put it away 3.Pull out GH:M and put it in the system 4.Wait for the splash screens to finish with their allotted screen time 5.Navigate the menus and set up the band again. 6.Choose a song. 7.Play.
How long before someone says, "hey, I want to play some System of a Down!"
Well when you don't have to change the disks for games like rock band 2, b/c u can even put RB1 songs on it, you kind of get used to not having to do it.
The UI for GHWT is so horribly designed that there really isn't much of a lag if you do have to stop and swap discs. If you needed a silver lining, that's about as good as it gets.
How can you justify disk switching when Rock Band did it fine? Sure it's not a pain to switch disks, but why would you want too? Actually I take that back, it is a pain to switch disk just for a song or two, then to switch back to play the rest of the songs you want to play. Nothing takes the fun out of playing Rock Band/Guitar Hero with a group of people then to take the time to switch disks.
Farseer, you're making the mistake of assuming that people, presumably in a group setting, are going to gravitate toward GHWT in the first place. (We all know they're really wanting to play Wii Sports! ;-) )
Personally, I have both, and haven't even thought about GHWT since I got RB2. 300+ songs in one platform FTW!
Aaahh Michael, but you can't underestimate the marketing behemoth that is Activision and the sheer name recognition of the Guitar Hero brand. I'm with you on the superiority of the RB platform, but hell, "Guitar Hero" has become like "Band Aid" - people are using it as a general name for all rock-based rhythm games.
You know what I hate? When my friends and I are playing Halo 3, and we decide we want to play Gears of War instead. I hate having to take the game out, and swap it with another game. It's just so inconvenient.
Zippy, apples to apples though, you mean you hate it when you and your friends are playing Halo 3, then decide to play on a set of additional maps you bought on another disc that requires a full return to dashboard and reloading of the game. Yeah, I would hate that too.
I'm new to the genre of plastic instrument games, having only had Rock Band 2 since Christmas. Has it been announced yet whether this game will have the same instrument compatability as GHWT? If I can use my RB2 instruments, this suddenly becomes a must buy for me.
I am sure you can. I would say if the Rock band stuff works on GHWT it will work on this. But man just play rock Band. WT sucks, I can't imagine this being any better.
Wow, I just read the comment above that this will be a full $60. I was expecting more like the AC/DC pack's current price of $30. Funk that jive, I love some Metallica, but that's kind of a deal breaker.
Eric, thanks for the advice. Given the price and everyone's bad feedback on GHWT, this just got downgraded to a Target clearance rack pickup...
I used to be a huge Metallica fan, but with that said, I will not be picking this up because I'm sick and tired of Activision's bullshit SKU system. Music games as platforms FTW.
i've just recently hopped on the Rock Band/Guitar Hero bandwagon with RB2 and World Tour, and i can already tell the latter series is becoming just as bad as Madden. Metallica will mark the fourth $60 game in the GH series in the span of 1.5 years.
Normally I wouldn't think of buying a Guitar Hero game (as compared to a Rock Band title), but dammit, it's Metallica. Not to mention that The Sword has a song in there (The Black River).
And although it works with the Death Magnetic DLC, that adds another 1440 MS points, also known as $18. So $78 for 60-ish songs? Not a good deal, but it calls to me.
Not justifying a purchase here, but isnt this MORE of a value than DLC. GH:M=40ish songs, $60.00(50 if you buy it on Wii) DLC=$2.00 a song. $40ish songs= $80.00
I dunno about how things work on the Guitar Hero side of things, but I know in Rock Band any bundle is discounted from the $2/song average. Not counting the $.99 songs, the best DLC value per song is Doolittle, with 14 songs for $20, which is close to (but still more than) 45 songs for $60.
So yeah, if your top priority is number of songs for your money, 45 for 60 isn't bad. But the biggest problem I think people have with the Guitar Hero spinoffs is that they lack exportable songs. Now that Rock Band 2 has proved itself to be such a strong platform for content, these one-off games are a little disappointing to most consumers, I'd imagine.
Does anyone know for sure how many songs this comes with, or are people making assumptions? I'm waiting for the official song total before I say yay or nay.
